What do Vegetarian P90xers eat for protein?
protein nutrition plan
1/18/11 7:05 PM
I have a client who is ready to start the program but concerned that beans are listed as a carb, not protein in the nutrition plan. What are some good veg alternatives for her?

Hi,

I am also following the vegetarian option and use eggs (although not all vegetarians eat eggs), egg whites and other protein substitutes such as tofu, and other soy products. You could also suggest the client utilize Shakeology which would provide a lot of the daily protein as well. The veggie meal plan does use a lot of eggs, soy and lentils to meet the daily protein requirements. If they are comfortable using protein substitutes such as Quorn or meatless crumbles products this will make the plan easier.

Good luck!

Kristi

I just got 12 grams of protein by eating about 1000 calories worth of very ripe, raw plaintains -- YUM! emoticon

I need about 36 grams of protein per day and get that very easily with 2500-3000 calories worth of raw fruits and veggies per day, nothing else.

That's just me. Everyone has different needs and preferences for fueling.

Hey,

I did not completely understand the nutrition guide. How many eggs do I need to eat for Level 1 - Phase 1 to get all the protein required for that day?

Thanks!

Good question. Does anyone know? For the regular plan Level 1 is 5 units of protein and 6 egg whites equals one unit. That's a LOT of eggs!

1 unit of eggs is 3 whole eggs or 6 egg whites...

Actually, 3 eggs would be substantially more calories and it would bring up the fat. If you need a yolk in there, go 4 yolks and one whole egg. Otherwise, 6 whites.

As a vegan, here's where I get my protein: lentils, beans, soy products, seeds, nuts, grains (esp quinoa). Good luck!!

I am just starting P90X and I am a lacto-ovo vegetarian. I am kinda confused on what is considered to be 1 unit of protein. I am on Level I Phase III and need 9 units of protein and I need help figuring out what is considered 1 unit of protein. Please help!

Just to echo a lot of what has been said, I am a part time vegan and I get most of my protein from nuts (almonds), soy (dry roasted edamame beans are great), quinoa and there are a number of good plant based protein powders around (from Beachbody and from others like Vega, Jai Lifestyle, GeniSoy etc). There are also some excellent soy based meat replacements (replacing chicken and ground beef) that make good stir fries and sauces and tacos and all that. If you are new to plant based diet, it is sometimes easier to take if what you eat is similar to what you were eating when you still ate meat, so the replacement foods are a good option as you become more used to the differences with the meatless diet.

Just my 2 cents! emoticon

Sounds like you're doing the portion plan, right? A unit of protein in that system = 100 calories worth of protein or 25 grams of protein (4 calories per gram). An egg white, for example contains about 3.5 grams of protein or 14 calories worth. That's 6 egg whites. Page 16 of the P90X nutrition guide has a handy lists on page 16 that gives other examples.

Thank you Longshot421 and AdStaffAndrew! I really appreciate all the advise and will value it and use it. I am a vegetarian and love eggs and dairy. So I don't want to go on a vegan plan. I did find a vegan newsletter on p90x. It is hard to find lacto-ovo vegetarian info. That is why I was wondering what is considered 1 unit of protein so I can make my own meal plan where protein is concerned.

I am not sure what a portion plan is. I am following the nutritional guide of p90x and it helps me calculate what my energy amount is and the plan has three phases. Is this a portion plan? Sorry I am still learning the lingo! emoticon

Thanks a lot for your help and I look forward to your advise....

Hey AdStaffAndrew..... Yes, I looked at my guide on page 16 and also on page 11 for suggestions. However, the protein and dairy overlap. for ex. yogurt and cheese are listed as good source of veg protein but they are also listed as dairy later on in the book.

I see what you mean by 6 egg whites = 1 unit of protien. I need 9 units of protein per day.... that just seems WAY TOO many eggwhites or any other substitute. emoticon

Well, I trust the program and will try it, but hope I am not overeating. Any advise???

Yes, that is the "portion plan", you have protein portions, carb portions etc., and the guide tells you what the approximate caloric equivalent is, so you can also figure out how many total calories you are taking in if you want to double check. What is helpful with the portion plan approach is that Beachbody have already done the work for you as far as to WHAT those calories are made up of, that is how many are from fat, from protein and from carbohydrates, which makes it much easier to get the correct proportions (i.e. getting enough protein, not eating too much fat etc.). So, it's sort of like a building block approach (which is why the graphic image of coloured blocks symbolizing the different components is helpful too).

If you follow the guide as to which phase of the progam you're in, and did the initial stuff with calculating what you should be taking in, you won't be over eating, so don't worry too much about that - BUT (and this is really important) - listen to your body! Everyone is a little bit different, so pay attention to how you're feeling and whether you're losing fat etc. Your body will let you know if you're on the right track, and you can make little tweaks to your diet here and there to fully optimise your results.

Hope it helps! The hardest part is starting, so you're already past that. emoticon

6 egg whites is the same as 3 eggs, so while it sounds like a huge amount of eggs it really isn't, especially when you factor in that most of the fat and calories are in the egg's yolk. Other good sources of protein for vegetarians are things like quinoa, tofu, nuts, greek yogurt, etc. The portion plan is by definition based on estimates and averaging. If you want to be precise about exactly how much protein you're getting, how much fat, etc. then I recommend you get a calorie tracker like myfittnesspal and use it to give you much more specific info about the food you're eating.

i do four egg whites per one whole egg... whey protein powders, cassien powder, milk, goat milk, almond milk, plain greek yogurt, cottage cheese, beans, quinoa, walnuts, cashews, almonds...
i stopped tracking my calories and macro content as i switched up my nutrition program, i do what i found works for me, i know it goes against everything this site and all the coaches etc preach and follow here so i wont get into it...and ive maintained and also am still shedding body fat and growing muscle...that being said i do know i easily get close to 250-275 grams of protein daily...i also dont worry about the carb content of all the veggies and fruit i eat as they are mainly complex carbs and the fruit i eat with my protein shakes esp.after workout helps restore faster...

you have to find what works for you, and what you like and enjoy thats the key!!!

Actually, your diet sounds terrific and doesn't go against BB's philosophies at all. All that counting and charting and close management of one's intake should, eventually, result in a person intuitively knowing what is good for them to eat or not. Ideally you shouldn't have to live by myfitnesspal.

Kevin,

Just how do you get to 250-275 g of protein? If I follow the 1 g protein daily per 1 pound of body weight, I need to eat 140 g. I think I'm getting 20-30 g. I'm not surprised I'm not gaining much muscle. Other than eggs (each has about 6 g of protein), protein shakes (15 g of protein), almond milk (1 g protein per cup), I'm falling way short! Can you give me an example of what you eat on a normal day?

Thanks
