How to get answers, Beachbody-style

In a perfect world, all the fitness and nutrition advice you’d really need would be “Get off your rear, eat lots of veggies, and drink water.” Sadly, that doesn’t always do the trick. Bodies can get injured. Workouts can be confusing. Vegetable consumption can be surprisingly challenging. So to help you navigate the mine-filled waters that make up the sea of good health, Beachbody has answers - lots of answers.

Customer Service – for all your “other” questions

For starters, if you have a non-fitness-and-nutrition-question regarding, for example, shipping, orders, web issues, or peace in the Middle East, your first (and hopefully last) stop will be Customer Service.

FAQs -- in case a bunch of people have already asked your question

If you have a fitness and nutrition question, we have answers in a variety of formats. The first place to look is the Fitness Advisor Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ). Mind you, I’m not saying that your queries aren’t unique. They may, indeed, be unique in the sense that thousands of people may have probably asked them before you did. Have a perusal of the FAQs to see if they’re in there.

Newsletters – for super in-depth answers to general questions

Another couple of great sources of information are the Beachbody Newsletter and the P90X Newsletter.. At this writing, the Beachbody Newsletter was well past its 400th issue. That’s a heck of a lot of info to parse through, so we’ve come up with the nifty past issue index. And here’s a P90X Newsletter index.

Email – not so great for answering your fitness and nutrition questions

After checking out all that information, there’s a slim chance your question still won’t be answered -- or maybe you just really, really want to interface with a member of the Beachbody staff. At this point, sending an email is really tempting, but don’t do it! Steve Edwards alone receives hundreds of emails each day. He tries his best to get through them, but in much the same way William Shatner can’t respond to every piece of fan mail individually, there’s no way Steve can answer all your emails, so your best bet is to hit the boards.

The Message Boards – for one-on-one answers to your questions

The Team Beachbody Message Boards, specifically the Nutrition or Fitness Forums in the Information & Education section, are the best way to get personalized answers from Beachbody.

Once you’ve gotten to this point, the quickest way to get an answer is to use the search feature towards the top of the page. If that doesn’t work, our friendly, courteous Advice Staff makes a point of reading everything posted in these two forums. We are, however, human, so if you think your question has been skipped, just add a post to your thread with a “bump.”

Keep in mind that if the coaches and members of the Team Beachbody community have answered your question sufficiently, we might not chime in. So, if you’re interested in our responses more than those of the general community, let us know when you post. Don’t discount non-Beachbody staff answers though. There are a lot of very knowledge people on our community.

When we do answer, either the Advice Staff will chime in, or if they deem it necessary, they’ll pass your question up the chain to one of our specialists, including the aforementioned Steve Edwards.

Please allow 24 hours for us to get to your questions and keep in mind that we don’t work weekends, unless we’re really, really bored. If your question is so urgent that you can’t wait that long, it’s probably an issue too important to be asking across cyberspace and you might want to talk to your doctor or health specialist.

Chat Rooms – roll the dice, you might get an answer

Finally, the Chat Rooms are probably the most instant way to get a personalized answer, but keep in mind that if you’re hoping for an in-depth dialog with Tony Horton, you’re not alone. Odds are that the answers you get will be quick and to-the-point, so if you require a conversation or you know your question is a tricky one, you’re much better off on the Message Boards.

Embarking on a new life of fitness can be overwhelming. And even if you’re a long-time exerciser, finding advice that suits your individual needs can be frustrating. With this in mind, we’ve come up with an assortment of venues for you to address your concerns. Hopefully, one of them will be a perfect fit!

I just started Turbo Fire and my knees are starting to hurt. I have been Turbo Jam and Hip hop abs for many years. I work out 6 days a week. About six years ago I do slim and 6 and loved it, but it really trashed my knees and had to stop. So is there anyway to build up to doing the fire drills and strengthening my knees. Do you think the turbofire prep will work? I just jumped into the regular Turbo fire figuring i am already conditioned. I would truly apprecaite any expertise.

Thank you!

Hi! Where do you typically workout, i.e. garage, living room with carpet, hardwood floors, etc?

I'm having a lot of trouble using the message boards. Whenever I post a new thread, I don't think it's going thru correctly. I'm not sure if I have everything set up correctly.

When I post a new thread, I cannot use the emotions and there is a symbol that will pop up after my thread to the far right that has a picture of a wrench and its says "action".

Can someone help me if you see this reply?

Also, the time is not right whenever I post a new thread. It's says it is three hours earlier than the actual time that I send the thread.

Please help!!!

Thanks

I would definitely start out with doing the modifications that Allie shows - keeping it low impact but still high intensity. Anytime you start jumping (both feet off the ground) the impact has the potential to be painful to those of us with joint problems (knees, ankles, etc.). Once your body starts getting used to the low-impact version of the routine, add in SOME of the plyo work (tuck jumps, air jacks, etc.). Eventually you may work your way up to the full out routine, if your knees will let you. Otherwise, just keep doing low impact, but really give it your all!!

Also, make sure you are wearing good shoes that provide lateral stability and cushioning (not a broken down old pair of shoes). Also, it's helpful to do these types of workouts on floors that AREN'T concrete. That said, if you do Turbo on carpet be careful of moves like "twist" where you pivot because the carpet will stop your tennis shoe from turning and you could potentially hurt your knee that way.

GOOD LUCK! emoticon

Jewls,

This is great advice. Making sure you have the right shoes for exercising is a very important step to preventing injury.
I've also done all of my at-home workouts on carpet. The little bit of extra padding is nice, especially when I'm jumping around or using my legs a lot. Also, maintaining good form and landing softly on toes when jumping will help, too. I wouldn't recommend doing intense cardio exercises on concrete (in a garage or concrete basement floor etc.) because there's almost no give in the floor. If you don't have carpet, maybe find some grass or go to a field or track nearby if you know the routine you're going to do and don't need a tv or computer screen to watch a dvd.
And yes, definitely never skip warming up, stretching, or cooling down.

Cory

Turbofire - Knee pain - a thought
9/15/11 5:31 PM as a reply to fitnessonfire63.
Hi capp63 - Congrats on beginning Turbofire! To add what the others have offered regarding knee pain; I would like to offer my personal experience with knee pain. I completed P90X and cycled through it and about halfway I started getting bad knee pain which also involved a pinched feeling in my knee. So, I took a break for a week (stretching, not sitting around) and then started Turbofire. I know it sounds insane but what my problem seemed to be was that I was not 'Pivoting' fully and that was putting too much pressure on my joints. (you should be on the balls of your feet and your hips should be turning). I continue with Turbofire and the pain is completely gone. I hope this helps. You are absolutely welcome to visit my page and message me to let me know how you are doing with your Turbofire! :-) Hey, We could be buddies with our Turbofire Workouts! Anyone In?!! I actually have a question on the Chin-Up Max. Can it be used with a chin-up bar that hangs in the door frame as opposed to a traditional chinup bar? I have a Gold Gym chin-up bar and I want to make sure the Chin-Up Max would work with it.

Thanks!

Are you suppose to do the turbo fire workouts twice a day-the schedule says for example "day one fire starter class + 10 stretch" I did day one all at once but it has a blank space that says _________/_________ am:pm
is that just so you know what time your working out?

I took that as when i do the workout, and when i do the stretch...because honestly...due to time constraints, its not always going to be at the same time (or if im sore, i hold off until that evening to do the stretch. Dont do two of the regular workouts in the same day...even if you love them, you'll burn out too quickly from soreness (and just all-out dread emoticon I love TF, and have been doing it (with mixing a few others) since April, but you've definitely gotta have a 'beat-your-chest' excitement when walking into each of the long workouts...and you wont have that if youre doing two in a day emoticon

Good luck with it---its a great way to kick your own booty into shape and the do-ableness to maintain with it too!

have a nice weekend,
Cimbra
