Shakeology and humiliated by gas.

I've been using Shakeology for almost a month now, suffering with bad bad gas, bloating, frequent trips to the bathroom. It just occurred to me the Shakeology is the culprit. I use fat free milk and a banana blended with ice. Tasted great love it! I have no sugar cravings and feel like I'm being good to myself by giving myself such a healthy meal.
I can't handle this storm in my stomach. Any suggestion? I've been told to try getting a colonic, or do a bowel cleanse.
My husband is grossed out and my coworkers are in shock. I'm humiliated. emoticon

Thank you,
Cindy

Cindy,

I posted the same thing a while back. I lost a customer yesterday for the same reason. She tried all different liquids, including coffee, water, milk, and more. I stopped drinking it for a while, then restarted. Not much help. I've tried Beano before hand, no help. I tried the Greenberry, same thing. Unfortunately, I think it's just something in the powder. I no longer drink it every day. I LOVED having it for lunch every day. Now I just have it from time to time. I know the smell and humiliation you're talking about. I was there.

The P90X protein bars do exactly the same thing to me.

I'm sorry I don't have any solutions for you. Sometimes it's just a relief to know you're not alone.

Beachbody, if you're listening, please figure it out.

Steve

Cindy,

Every woman in my family has IBS (cranky stomachs/intestines) at some level, thankfully mine's really not so bad but I get it too on occasion. The best cure for it is yogurt. Specifically Activia. It's something about it balances out the bad bacteria. Regular yogurt works well too. Gas-X has also been a nice little miracle.

I would try these two before giving up or even just drinking more water after you have your shake to dilute it (you're supposed to drink 8 glasses a day anyway right - lol!). Also I've used Beano before for regular food, and it doesn't really do the trick for chronic issues. Gas-X works 100% of the time for me.

Good luck!

- Wendy

These are great suggestions. I also recommend using a milk substitute, like almond or soy milk. (Or, just water) I know a few people mentioned they did this and it didn't make a difference, but I can't imagine that the milk is helping the matter.

Hi Cindy, Try using half a scoop for about a week and see how you feel. Then if everything is okay try doing the full scoop. I had some customers with the same issue and after they did this everything was good.

Hi Cindy,

Lot's of great suggestions. I would skip the banana, as they often contain fungus and may add to the stomach disturbance. This may simply be intolerance toward whey. If you have trouble with milk and/or dairy products, this will make it worse. Try using water and see if it reduces the problem. I would like for them to eliminate the whey in this product and use spirulina (blue algae) as the protein source instead. Whey is not good for lactose intolerant people, which affects more than half the people in our country now I think? Other than the whey, it is an excellent product!

I have had the same problem. I have used whey protein for years, so I know that is not the issue. I have been traveling lately, so I've only been mixing it with water (no milk) and that has not helped. I'm hoping there is just an adjustment period. A FAST adjustment period!

I had this problem a while back when I first found myself exercising on a more regular basis, and as my family can't burp (dunno why, no one in my family can), it was pretty bad. I also found I was going to the bathroom more often, and when I did that was pretty stinky too. I decided to slow down my workout and found some detox diet plans to do. This was recommended to me by a nutritionist and was explained that because I was going from a mediocre healthly to a much more healthy, my body was beginning to break down and discard the crap that was inside me (no pun intended). So I ended up doing to detox, and I still went to the bathroom often but the gas side stopped so at least the stink was contained where the stink belonged. After completing the detox diet I was on (which was a ten day diet I think), I resumed my previous use of whey protein drink and working out more regularly and it was dramatically reduced. I'm pretty sure any high protein source is going to give a little bit of gas, but I lost the bloating feeling and could contain my 'outbursts'. Hope that helps.

I looked at the ingredient list for Shakeology and it contains Ginkgo. Wikipedia said that Ginkgo may cause, in certain individuals, gastrointestinal discomfort, among other things. Just look at the Wikipedia page for Ginkgo Biloba.

I think the milk is destroying your stomach, try using just water or soy/almond/rice milk...I bet that will help a lot!!

I had the same "shocked and horrified" experience within 3 days of starting. But, I really liked how shakeology made me feel!

I have experienced almost 100% improvement, by mixing Shakeology 1/2 to 3/4 strength; 2 days on, 1 day off. I still use milk, banana, and a few blueberries or strawberries; occasionally adding about 20 grams protein powder. For me, something in Shakeology was producing the horrible gas, not the milk or whey.

I know everybody's system is a little a different, but this worked great for me!

Hi Cindy,

I think the milk may be the culprit. I didn't realize for a long time I had an intolerance to dairy. Once I stopped eating most dairy, the gas stopped. Bananas also give me a little gas, but I do love them so! I mix my Shakeology with one full glass of water, sometimes a banana and either frozen strawberries or blueberries and I have no gas. As suggested earlier, you can also try a milk substitute. I drink rice milk with my cereal and never have gas. You can also take lactose intolerance tablets before you drink Shakeology or before eating any dairy. My sister has to do that as she also has a terrible intolerance to dairy. I am not a doctor, but boy do I feel your pain. Been there.

Hope that helps a little bit.

Love and Light,

Donna

Ahhhh Gas! Don't we all love it ( NOT ). I started Shakeology myself about 3 weeks ago and I have been letting stinky bombs go myself. I also have Ulcerative Colitis and was thinking that was the problem. I notice when I take a break from the Shakeology for a day I still have some gas bombs but the second day is much better. There are alot of great ingredients in the shakes which can sometimes the be too strong for some, espically right off the get go. When I became a coach I did some research and it was recommended to start with a 1/2 dose and work your way up. I make mine with soy or almond milk but I was making them really thick and they were hurting my stomach, so I used less powder and maybe more milk and it got better. If you split your shake up and drink it as 2 of your snacks it seems to help as well. I hope some of this may help, and just know that your fellow gas bomb friends are here to help.

I'd like to thank everyone for their candor on such a delicate subject! I started Shakeology today and had some concerns about how it might affect my digestion. I really appreciate the suggestions for how to introduce the product to my system and avoid embarrassment.

Thanks for posting this. I just ordered Shakeology for the first time and some of your suggestions sound good since I am Lactose Intolerant. I'm sure if that(gas) happens I can adjust it to make it work for me. Thanks.emoticon

I started using Shakeology October, 2010. I too had lots of stinky gas a few hours after consumption. I continued to use it most days despite the gas. Our family recently got into milk goats and this spring we got our first babies and tada....a milk producing goat. Since that time (March) I have been using fresh raw goat milk in my shakes. Since that time my cycle of constipation and that stinky gas has disappeared. So each of you need to get a milk goat!!! LOL

OK, I guess that is not an option for everybody. Would plain yogurt help?

I'm lactose intolerant and I can tolerate most whey supplements if they have digestive enzymes in it. I have a brand I really like and add half a scoop to my Shakeology. I can tolerate the Shakeology very well too. I know this isn't the case for everyone though. For the first 4 or 5 months of drinking Shakeology I had the same problem. Crazy gas! But it seems to have gotten better now. I use almond milk or water in mine. I also think I have IBS so I don't know if that contributes to it. Shakeology also has so many ingredients, if your body isn't used to getting those kinds of nutrients, especially the fiber in it, you may experience this until your bowels get used it. Remember, it also has probiotics in it. Shakeology is a great product, it has helped fix a lot of my gastrointestinal issues. I used to be miserable and I started drinking the Shakeology and haven't had any issues except for the gas and occasional IBS flare up. Not to mention being lactose intolerant and can't have ice cream lol. It's a really nice treat for me to be able to drink it! emoticon Hope it gets better or goes away, don't give up on it though. Keep trying until you find something that works, it's such a great product!! You could always get some digestive enzymes and try putting it in your Shakeology. You may have to buy the capsules and just break them open or just take them before drinking it. emoticon

The only time I have this problem was when I was mixing it with yogurt. I thought adding yogurt with my Shakeology would be a good addition, not for me! In fact, I have given up all dairy, and my system is so much happier! Now do I fart sometimes, heck yes! haha emoticon

It could very well be that your body has an insufficient amount of some enzyme or enzymes necessary to breakdown what's in the Shakeology. If that's the the problem, the fix is very cheap and easy. Giant Eagle's Nature s Basket brand of Enzyme Complex is what I use on a regular basis as a response to not having a gall bladder. I don't have any excess gas and i drink Shakeology every day. Enzymes happen to be a great part of ANY health regimen because of the wonderful effect they have of addressing any inflammation that may crop up in your body If this works for you, please post it. It looks like a lot of people have the same problem.
