Tell us about your life before you started the program. How did you feel about yourself and your body? * I was not overweight when I was in my teens and early twenties. During that time period my weight never went above 125. However, I was unhappy with the shape of my body. I wanted to have the types of figures I saw in magazines…. So I dieted. I dabbled in all kinds of diets, from ultra low-calorie to ultra low-fat. None of them stuck and the most I lost was about 10 lbs, and it would always creep back on. After I had my children (mid to late 20s), my body changed and I fell into a sedentary lifestyle. I went from a size 8 to a size 16 (a tight 16!) over the next 10 years, ‘dieting’ many times along the way. I tried so many diets (many of which helped me drop pounds), but I did not really change anything...after all, it was a 'diet'! It was meant to be quick and not permanent! I yoyo dieted my way up to about 200 lbs. I had no energy, high blood pressure and borderline cholesterol. I was tired and sedentary…I wasn’t really living my life. I avoided having my picture taken, often choosing to be the photographer, and I hated clothing shopping. It just reminded me of what I had done to my body.
What inspired you to change your life and begin your transformation journey? * Well...After I turned 40, I started to think about my life. My cholesterol was border-line and my doctor had to put me on blood pressure medicine. I weighed in at around 200 lbs. I hated taking blood pressure medicine! I hate taking any medicine! I hated even more that I knew my weight was causing my health problems. I had always been pretty healthy. I wasn’t really enjoying my life or my family because I was tired and felt awful about the way I looked. I knew I needed to make a permanent change if I wanted to have the healthy life that I had managed to let slip between my fingers.
What is the greatest challenge you faced before beginning the program? How did the program and Beachbody® help you overcome that challenge? * The workouts were intense. I had a hard time at first. I modified and pushed through as much as I could, but Plyometrics and jumping were my most difficult challenges. I was carrying around so much extra weight that I couldn’t do some of the plyo moves or Dreya rolls, or even a few of the yoga moves. I couldn’t even make it all the way through Plyometrics. I modified the moves I couldn’t do as much as possible, and vowed that I would do them eventually. I pushed myself until I could do them. Now I can do all of those moves…and since my fat roll in the middle is gone, I can do Dreya rolls too!
Why did you choose this particular program? * I have always liked working out with weights as part of exercise (when I bothered to make the time for exercise). I had heard of p90x through some friends of mine who invited me to come to a Fit Club class. The video we did that day was p90x. It was hard for me, but I am stubborn and got through it. I went to a couple of classes with them… all were p90x. The workouts were hard, but I enjoyed them. However, the idea of working out that hard every day scared me. I was so out of shape. While I was there one day, I met Richard Neal, a man who had had great success in losing weight with p90x... and was still losing. I was encouraged, but still a little skeptical. After all, I was a 41-year-old woman… he was a young man. Still, his success was inspiring to me, and I was seriously considering doing a full round of p90x. I worked out on my own at home for a while and went to some Fit Club classes… and finally, after a few weeks… I felt ready to take on the p90x challenge.
What in particular did you like about the program you chose? * I like that P90X alternates weights with cardio...and that I could add in a cardio workout if I wanted to on weight days. Tony was funny and encouraging and just made me want to succeed. Whenever I pushed play, the challenge was on...How far could I push myself today?
Describe the results you achieved with your Beachbody program. Which achievements are you proud of? * I have had great results… better than I ever expected! When I went for my physical this year, my doctor took me off of my blood pressure medicine and my total cholesterol is around 150 with an HDL of 67. I can do more activities with my family and am actually a part of the family photos now! I am the same size I was when I was 19 years old…size 4. I am weighing in at 126 pounds and I see muscles on myself that I never saw before…ever! I no longer snore. My knees don’t hurt when I bend down to pull weeds from the garden, and I don’t get winded running back and forth while I am cooking on the grill and in the kitchen at the same time. I have muscles where I never noticed muscles before. I am more fit now than I have ever been thanks to the combination of cardio and weights I got from p90x.
How has your life changed since completing your Beachbody program? * Wow! Well... my blood pressure is normal and I don't require medicine! That one is HUGE for me! I feel better and have more energy. I am able to do things, physically, that I thought I would never be able to do again like turn a cartwheel and not get dizzy...or hurt! There is something very freeing about that. I can bend and stoop (to weed the garden or wash my dogs) without killing my knees or losing sensation in my lower legs. I feel strong (because I AM strong) and much more confident. I am now in those family pictures I avoided (another big one for me). I can go to a store and buy clothes in the ladies' section instead of the women's section...and I like the way clothes look on me, too! Shopping is fun again! I have broken a link in the chain of obesity in my family. I will not be part of that chain ever again!
How did your Team Beachbody® Coach support you on your journey? Kevin had been there for me even before I finally took on p90x. I had tried a few times in recent years, with limited success, to lose weight. Kevin would always offer encouragement when he noticed that I was losing weight. As my coach, he has been there for me even more. He encourages me by asking me about how I am doing and telling me how great I am looking, offers advice about things that challenge me, gives me ideas on foods to make that are good for me and information regarding sites to visit for support and information. He pushes me to get the most out of my workouts when I go to Fit Club… he sometimes even makes me do tuck jumps during the ‘breaks’ in the video because he wants me to keep challenging myself. Whenever I reached a milestone in my weight loss journey, I would let him know because I knew he cared. I am so thankful to have him as a coach,mentor and friend.
How did a Beachbody Supplement or Nutritional Product or Program (such as Shakeology® or Beachbody Ultimate Reset®) support your transformation? What are the greatest benefits you gained? Did you see benefits to your energy, sleep, mood/mental clarity, digestion/regularity? Chocolate Shakeology is amazing! The fact that it is sweetened with Stevia is just icing on the cake to me, as I have pretty much crossed sugar off of my list of things to eat. I often blend it in the blender with ice…and nothing else. It tastes great! I have used Shakeology as a limited supplement in my diet... I have used it as a cleanse after a trip to Haiti, where my diet was a little limited and included more processed food than usual. The trip, and the processed foods I had been eating, left me a little sluggish. The Shakeology cleanse helped me get my energy back and ‘recalibrate’ my digestive system. I use it as a meal substitute on occasion…usually breakfast. I find that it gives me extra oomph to get through the morning (not my favorite time of day). Shakeology is so easy to use! I have never liked shaker cups because I didn’t think they worked well. With Shakeology, I have discovered it wasn’t the shaker cup at all. I have used the shaker cup to mix Shakeology at work. It mixes beautifully. Just add water… delicious! I was surprised at how well it mixed in the shaker cup and how good it tasted without having to add anything extra. I was prepared for a less pleasant experience given the fact that I have used other protein powders in the past with less than palatable results.
How did a Beachbody Supplement or Nutritional Product or Program affect any existing health conditions you have? I discovered the message boards right away. I have used message boards before for weight loss and find them to be very helpful when I am having a hard time. TeamBeachbody message boards are a great place to find encouragement, accountability and information. I also love the fitness tools. I use the workout sheets. I like to track my progress. It’s encouraging to see how far you’ve come… which is why I also use the Goal Tracker. I only recently started looking at the nutrition tips. I love to learn new things about nutrition. I also love to browse the recipes. But my favorite is the inspiring transformation stories. When I would feel sad or discouraged, they always picked me up.
What tips or tools did you find most useful? What made them so instrumental? Love the recipes on the site. I go to them frequently when I start to get bored with my food. I also like the nutrition tips...I can't believe I get all that information and it doesn't cost me a dime.
