What Daniel R. won:
Tell us about your life before you started the program. How did you feel about yourself and your body? * I have been in law enforcement since 1990. Since 2002 I have been a Federal Agent. To do this job you need to be in good shape. You have to be able to fight, shoot, and move. When I started the job I was in pretty good shape, however after 10 years on the job I was probably in the worst shape of my life. I turned 40, I was unhappy, tired all of the time, I smoked, was overweight, had sleep apnea where I would stop breathing for minutes at a time, and I knew that if the time came where I needed to fight or move there was a good chance that I was not going to be able to do what needed to be done. I knew I needed to change otherwise I was going to have a heart attack or die worse than that I was letting my colleagues down as you have to depend on each other and I had allowed myself to become an out of shape liability. I was having a midlife crisis and I wanted to start over.
What inspired you to change your life and begin your transformation journey? * It’s be said that in order to make a real, meaning positive and definitive change you have to hit bottom, you know really hit the low point in order to realize that you need to make a change. My low point occurred at the beginning of 2012 when I stepped on the scale and the number 302 flashed up at me. I had quit smoking on New Year’s Eve and turned 40 on January 14th 2012. It was February and I was tipping the scale at 302. I knew right then and there that I had to do something. I was in denial for sure. You don’t just hit 302 without some indications. I knew I was gaining weight but there comes a point when you look at your parents and realize that maybe its genetics or something. I come from big Italian stock so this seemed plausible. At the start of this journey, and that is what this has become for me, I was wearing tight 46 waist pants and 3XL shirts. The cold hard facts were that I did this to myself and I was the only one who could do the work to get where I needed to be.
What is the greatest challenge you faced before beginning the program? How did the program and Beachbody® help you overcome that challenge? * I think the greatest challenge is overcoming past failures when it comes to losing weight. Failure has a way of taking the wind of your sails and steals your motivation. These programs work. That ability to show success restores the motivation that failure takes away. I found that I look forward to the challenges in the programs and that by following the program anyone can be successful, even me. There are so many success stories that have shown how successful you can be when you follow the programs and just push play. The Power 90 Program and later the P90X program provided me the means to redefine not only my physical appearance but also how I chose what, when and where to eat. Granted I did not follow the nutrition plan due to the fact that I travel 5 days a week and it would be all but impossible to carry the needed food around with me.
What in particular did you like about the program you chose? * The thing that I liked about the Power 90 program was that it allowed me to modify moves that, in the beginning, I could not do if I wanted to keep up with Tony. Power 90 was challenging, fun and made me work. When I got to the point where it did not seem like a challenge I moved up to the next level. The ability to constantly challenge your performance was one of the best features. No matter what your fitness level, the Power 90 program allows the flexibility to adjust as you become more physically fit. When I moved up to do P90X, the challenges continued and make you work even harder. With my travel schedule, the ability to carry my gym with me all around the world makes it easy to find time to w ork out. I find myself looking forward to working out again just because I like the challenge and the results that come from pushing play every day.
Describe the results you achieved with your Beachbody program. Which achievements are you proud of? * The results that I have achieved while using the Power 90 and P90X programs is nothing short of amazing. I have lost a total of 102 lbs. I have gone from tight 46 waist pants to comfortable 34 waist pants which coincidentally is the same size that I was in high school. In my last physical fitness test for work which consists of pull ups, pushups, sit ups and a 1.5 mile run for time I ran faster (12.42) and did more pull ups (4) than I have ever done. I have more energy than I have had in the last 15 years and I feel as though that I am in the best shape of my life. I completed the 2012 Warrior Dash while doing Power 90, this was my first time ever doing something like this and next year I will be doing the Warrior Dash again. I am also contemplating running a half marathon just because I feel so good and I need a challenge to train for. I am proud of everything that I have accomplished over the last month while using the beach body programs. Dan 2.0 has arrived.
How has your life changed since completing your Beachbody program? * My life since completing the programs has become for the lack of a better word; weird. Having always been the fat guy and changing to be the fit guy is taking some getting used to. Its only one letter but fat to fit is one of the coolest things that you can do to yourself. I have noticed that people who have known me for a long time all ask first what happened to me if I was sick or had some kind of surgery. When I explain what I have done and how I did it the questions start. One of my friends referred to me as a “Weight Loss Rock Star” because people want to know how I did it when they see my driver’s license picture which has the Dan 1.0 pic on it. I tell everyone about how I have done this using Power 90 and P90X, along with watching what I eat and making smart food choices. It’s not rocket science but it takes commitment. The one thing about my life that has not changed is that this is still a journey and it’s not over yet.
How did participating in a Challenge Group help you reach your goals? How did your group support you and keep you accountable? The Facebook group that I am a member of sponsored by my coach has been a great tool in keeping me accountable for what I am doing on my journey. I am used to having to answer for my actions and the team concept that I am used to along with the camaraderie in the group has been very helpful. I mean if you go on a bender and eat a whole pizza by yourself, its not a big deal, meaning you can always find a way to justify your actions to yourself, however try explaining to the rest of your group why you are a weak willed pizza eating fat body who also skipped your your workout is not something that I want to have to do Hell hath no fury like a scorned Beach body coach lol.
How did your Team Beachbody® Coach support you on your journey? My coach Heather Bell has been instrumental in the success that I have made since using P90X. I really did not use any of the Beachbody support stuff on the website till after I met Heather on a flight from Chicago to Baltimore in August of 2012. The funny thing is that she was not even supposed to be on the flight but she missed her earlier one and wound up sitting next to me on the flight. We started talking and I was talking about doing the Warrior Dash the day before and how I had lost 64 lbs. so I would not die during the race. When she asked me how I lost the weight I told her by using the Power 90 program from Beachbody. She responded that she was a coach for Beachbody and from there not only motivated me to start doing P90X, showed me the P90X phone app which I now use, got me started on Shakeology, and has been my coach ever since. She provided the support or sounding board about what I was doing and what I could do to improve my results.
How did a Beachbody Supplement or Nutritional Product or Program (such as Shakeology® or Beachbody Ultimate Reset®) support your transformation? What are the greatest benefits you gained? Did you see benefits to your energy, sleep, mood/mental clarity, digestion/regularity? I have been using the Shakeology program for the last few weeks and I have found the product to be something that I will be doing for life. I was not sure that I would like drinking my food because I have tried weight loss or meal replacement shakes in the past and they never kept me full. Shakeology has been different plus with all of the recipes on the website I have found that I never get bored with my breakfast. I used to have oatmeal every morning but that gets boring and I was never that big of an oatmeal guy in the first place. Shakeology has become my go to breakfast and I almost look forward to having it every morning especially if I am trying a new recipe. Being on the road 5 days a week, this is a quick, easy and satisfying way to get what I need nutritionally without having to be at the mercy of a hotel restaurant or eating on the airplane.
How did a Beachbody Supplement or Nutritional Product or Program affect any existing health conditions you have? In addition to the Shakeology I also use the results and recovery drink after working out. I can definitely notice a difference in muscle soreness if I don’t use it after I work out. Plus it tastes great and is the closest thing to orange juice that I drink anymore. One thing that Shakeology and losing weight has done has eliminated my use of antacids. I used to chew Rolaids like breath mints when I was 302 lbs. I have not had heartburn, acid reflux or sleep apnea since losing the weight with the help of the programs and nutritional products. I sleep great and feel like a new person. I also have experienced much better gastrointestinal health and regularity which has been an added bonus.
Did you achieve any other measureable improvements with a Beachbody Supplement or Nutritional Product or Program? (e.g. Blood Pressure, Blood Sugar, triglycerides, etc...) I have not had any blood work since beginning my journey however I do know for a fact that my blood pressure has improved greatly. I was borderline hypertensive for many years and the last time I went to the doctor my blood pressure was in the normal range. I credit that to the use of the Beachbody products and programs.
