Tell us about your life before you started the program. How did you feel about yourself and your body? * I've always been pretty active, well...off and on. I swam in high school, played lots of intramural sports in college & stayed very fit thru my 20s. Over the last 10 years, I've trained with some of the best in the industry (including one who changed how I see fitness forever), but for whatever reason I just couldn't get it to STICK as a priority in my life. I stopped training in Sept 2010 because I bought a house and could no longer afford it. I knew I needed to find an alternative but I couldn't even fit a gym membership into my budget at the time. Slowly, I started gaining weight and then I started feeling worse and worse about myself and my body. I think I hit bottom when I went to the doc for a routine visit this past January and got on the scale...I nearly fell off! I had never weighed that much in my entire life! In fact, in a less than 2 years, I'd gained 25 pounds! I suddenly felt so incredibly unhealthy and FAT!!!
What inspired you to change your life and begin your transformation journey? * The first thing was that eye-opening visit to the doctor, but it continued with the worst-ever cholesterol results that followed and a subsequent visit to the doctor to discuss them. I think it finally hit me that something needed to change...FAST! I started out small with taking my dog on two walks a day, but that wasn't enough and I knew it. I had purchased P90X a year ago but never stuck with it. I was in a vicious cycle of depression, feeling fat, stressed out at work, and knowing I needed to do something about it but I was STUCK. And then I got an email from my Coach about a challenge they were starting on April 1st. After getting more info and then talking it over with my boyfriend, I signed up for it. I thought, what the heck, it might even work! (I should add, I had gotten laid off in February, so I had a little extra time on my hands at the time.)
What is the greatest challenge you faced before beginning the program? How did the program and Beachbody® help you overcome that challenge? * Time, and ironically, motivation. Of course I wanted to feel healthy again, but I would get depressed about my clothes not fitting and that would turn into a lot of inaction. I work very well with other people, and I've always had amazing results when working with a good trainer. But I knew that wasn't in my budget. P90X WAS because I already had it and all the equipment. I think the key was joining the challenge group. Being a part of this group and having Stef & Ray involved along the way made a huge impact. They helped me stay focused, answered my questions and were my biggest cheerleaders! (My boyfriend didn't think very highly of "home fitness videos" at the time...fyi, that's changed!) The 2 keys to my success were: 1) I picked a consistent time of day to workout daily (5:30pm, even Saturdays!) and 2) I utilized the coaching team that Beachbody assigned me...FINALLY! If only I had known how awesome they were a year ago!!
Why did you choose this particular program? * Prior to buying my house, I worked with a trainer, and after buying my house and therefore having a significant change in my budget, I was looking for other ways to get fit. At one point I got so desperate, that I'd even inquired about a membership at 24-HR Fitness (yuck!). Then one of my girlfriends told me about P90X. Since I don't watch TV and never saw the Infomercial, I did some online research on it (including posting a question about it on Facebook), and it sounded PERFECT for me. I say that because my past fitness success had always come from working with intense athletic trainers vs. cookie-cutter fitness trainers, so I was used to working my body to the max. knew that approach worked for me. So I bought it! I never even noticed that Beachbody had other programs! In fact, I didn't realize that until I joined the challenge group & learned that it wasn't a "P90X challenge" group.
What in particular did you like about the program you chose? * The intensity of the program! Since I wasn’t new to intense training and it had always worked VERY well for me in the past, I thought this was the perfect program for me. And I found that I enjoyed the workouts very much! I especially like Tony's muscle confusion approach to exercise.
Describe the results you achieved with your Beachbody program. Which achievements are you proud of? * Wow...where to begin. To me, the measurement results are small compared to the psychological and physical ability results, although the cholesterol results are AMAZING (even got a Congrats note from my Dr)! I've conquered SOOO many moves that were impossible in the 1st 30 days: V-up rollups, Sphinx pushup types, YOGA! (which is my favorite workout now!), increased weights across the board, better balance and flexibility, and so much more that I'm not remembering right now. I'm especially proud that I didn't give up, even when I came down with a nasty cold. The biggest though is self-confidence and an incredible sense of accomplishment. I can't even put into words the psychological impact this program has had on me. I feel so much stronger now, both physically and mentally, and I'm motivated to keep it going! I chose the Lean routine this first time, and I did the Classic routine right after (with about a month break in-between.)
How has your life changed since completing your Beachbody program? * Well, for starters, I'm working full-time again (since May 1), but I'm still committed to that 5:30 pm workout time (I work from home, so it's not as hard as it sounds). It's just a habit now. Even my dog is used to it. I know that I can accomplish anything that I put my mind to...and now I am a HUGE fan of P90X! I've heard that so many people give up halfway thru, and all I can say is "Wait until that third month - that's where all the magic happens!" I strongly recommend any new P90Xers to get in touch with your coach! They are awesome and are there to help you be successful! Who wouldn't want a cheerleader in their life, especially if you struggle with motivation?! I've even been able to convince my boyfriend to start eating better! And I’ve quickly become a Beachbody Challenge Group junkie – I’m currently in a Body Beast challenge group.
How did participating in a Challenge Group help you reach your goals? How did your group support you and keep you accountable? This was HUGE!!!! I bought P90X back in Spring 2011, and I remember when Ray (and Stef Mendez-Cantu) was assigned to me, but I never thought about it. I wish I'd gotten in touch with them sooner! As my boyfriend puts it, I am motivated by anything social, so when I spoke to him about the challenge group, he was very supportive. I didn't really publicize to my friends that I was doing this program (What if I didn't finish it...again?), so it was nice to be able to share some of my accomplishments and other things with the group. And it was a great place to ask questions, get an extra boost of encouragement, etc. I also enjoyed sharing in other people's successes and being able to encourage when I could. My group kept me accountable I would periodically receive phone calls or texts from Ray asking how I was doing.
How did your Team Beachbody® Coach support you on your journey? I'm very blessed to have two coaches for the "price" of one! Ray and his wife Stef work together a lot and they are such an amazing team! They have both been such a HUGE support! They are my biggest cheerleaders and are always there to help if I have questions (like, what do I do if I hate the Shakeology flavor I just got in the mail?). I honestly believe that I would not have made it as far as I have if it hadn't been for Stef and Ray. They keep encouraging me by sharing some of their own stories, and knowing that they have both done P90X made a big difference too. When I did Yoga X for the first time, I "screamed" to our group how hard it was to get through the whole thing, and Stef cheered me on by telling me that Yoga X is the hardest workout in the program and how great that I made it through the whole thing! (I’ve since learned that Plyo is actually the hardest!) And Ray's weekly calls/texts are huge. Now we’re all doing Body Beast together!
How did a Beachbody Supplement or Nutritional Product or Program (such as Shakeology® or Beachbody Ultimate Reset®) support your transformation? What are the greatest benefits you gained? Did you see benefits to your energy, sleep, mood/mental clarity, digestion/regularity? It really helped having one meal a day (out of the FIVE that I had to start having!) that was EASY and so incredibly healthy! Like Carl, I hate veggies, so this has been awesome! The biggest difference I've noticed is my energy level - it's through the roof now!! Since my nutrition habits all changed at once, it's hard to tell what other benefits I've received from Shakeology, but my mood has definitely been a LOT better too (which could also be attributed to my overall increase in health and fitness).
How did a Beachbody Supplement or Nutritional Product or Program affect any existing health conditions you have? N/A
Did you achieve any other measureable improvements with a Beachbody Supplement or Nutritional Product or Program? (e.g. Blood Pressure, Blood Sugar, triglycerides, etc...) My cholesterol is AMAZING now! My total cholesterol dropped from 252 to 162 in just a few months! The letter from my doctor even said "Your cholesterol levels are excellent, congratulations and keep up the good work." My BP has always been low (healthy low), so there was no major change there.
What tips or tools did you find most useful? What made them so instrumental? I wear a HRM for every workout - I'm a numbers person, so I enjoy the game of seeing how many calories I burn. I work out at the same time of day every day, even on weekends. This keeps things very consistent for me rather than trying to juggle my schedule and find time to fit it in. I think this was HUGE in getting a habit formed. I actively participate in my challenge groups - this was a big factor in keeping me accountable and engaged. I use MyFitnessPal to track my meals. For my 2nd round of P90X, I installed the iPhone app and OMG what an amazing tool! I can’t say enough good things about this app, and when it was available for free, I told everybody I know to download it. Now that I’m doing Body Beast, I find that I terribly miss my P90X app! It really helped me stay on track with the program, and I quickly became dependent on it. Everything you need to get through P90X is on that app!
