Should I have a "cheat day"???

I am sure virtually 99.9% of the people indulge in some sort of "bad" food once in a while and for the other .1% that say they don't, I would like to see them on the next reality show called "How I don't cheat on my meals EVER and you can too, just follow me into the liar's den and I’ll tell you all about it." Once they’re on camera 24/7 then we’ll find out the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

I mean c'mon, what sane person living in this modern western society can stay true to "good" eating 7 days a week for the rest of their life? Let's be honest, we all indulge once in a while.

There is a BIG difference between a cheat day and cheating every day.

It's the habits that are formed over a longer period of time on a consistent basis that cause us all to either get unhealthy and out of shape or healthy and in shape. Please read that again!!!

The key is consistency and also a little bit of flexibility. Consistently eat "good" foods that are on the "good" list most of the time and you will find that cravings for bad stuff tend to diminish and have less control over you, your body and your brain.

I will admit that some people are so heavily addicted to certain types of foods, (can we say SUGARS) that a cheat day may have some negative effects if one is not very careful, BUT if we just keep replacing the fake, non-nutritious, sugar laden, quick and convenient, kill you slowly in a couple decades or sooner foods, with things like REAL fruits, REAL vegetables, REAL meats, REAL breads, REAL water, etc. then we will be well on the way to fitness and health prosperity without being so rigid that we can’t have cake on our wedding day, or only eat from the salad bar the whole time we’re on a 7 day cruise to the Caribbean.

So why am I ranting you may ask?

Because some people will have you believe that they NEVER indulge, and that, quite frankly, leads a person who has just started their fitness and health journey or has been trying for a while, to also believe that if they can’t eat perfectly every single meal of every single day then what’s the use. This leads to discouragement and then utter failure.

The key is, plan on a daily or weekly basis to replace a “bad” food with a “good” food and as time progresses so do your results. Initially, it does take some restraint, but eventually you’ll have fewer cravings for the things that have stifled your progress of being fit and healthy up till now, and more energy, and all around good feelings to keep that drive and determination to stay in pursuit of your goals.

You will also be able to have some junk once in a while without worrying so much about those who try to make you feel guilty and say, “Oh, if I even look at that kind of food I’ll put on 10 pounds.” Or worse yet, Jillian the axe murderer screaming in your ear calling you a Big Loser for having some cake and ice cream on your kids birthday.

You can do it, just be sensible and take your time. This is your race and your pace. Plan things out and if the plan is not working start asking the why, what, where, when, who and how’s. See what things trigger you into not doing things right and learn what it takes not to repeat them.

Indulge once in a while without feeling guilty, because you know that you planned on doing it and now it’s back to being consistent with the good choices that have brought you the tremendous feelings of energy and accomplishment.

I wish you the best from one “cheater” to another.

Thank you for this, Troy!
I started TurboFire last month & did so great up untill the last week of the first 30 days, which was Easter time. My family has to get together with my side & my hubby's side of the families & I totally over did it! Having that said, I have not worked out ONCE this week. I am a sugar addict & if I indulge even a little bit, I have a hard time recovering. I over indulged to the point that I got discouraged & lost focus of my goals. I have to be very careful with sweets, but the other stuff isn't too hard for me. I am starting over on week 5 of TurboFire Monday. =)

Hey Dmorris,

I understand completely. We tend to think that it is always a will power issue when it comes to keeping up with our exercise routines and schedules without realizing that certain foods, especially high sugar foods, just flat out drain our energy and fight heavily against whatever will power we do have.

I have found that I just cannot seem to beat the effects that sugars and bad foods have on my own will power. This is why I advocate slowly adding good foods, especially fruits and veggies to a person’s diet to replace the bad ones. By doing so, we will let the food do the wondrous work the way it was DESIGNED to do by transferring the proper nutrients into our bloodstream and stabilizing our blood sugar levels etc. After doing this long enough, a new and improved habit will be formed that will also lead the way to more new and improved habits, and before we know it, we are feeling better, stronger, more confident and virtually unstoppable.

I don’t know a person alive who can truly perform at their best or even remotely close while eating non-nutritious and highly processed foods. Whenever I do, I literally feel like doing nothing at all except of course lounging around and eating more of the same junk that made me feel bad in the first place.

I have never been on drugs but now that I can reflect on my past eating habits with a sound mind, I believe I have been given a glimpse into what a drug addict may go through when they NEED another fix and just can’t seem to muster up enough will power to say no.

It’s great that you have recognized what effects they have on you (discouragement and lack of focus) because now you know what to do and have a plan to start fighting again on Monday. I wish you the best of luck and tremendous blessings with your endeavor.

Keep fighting!!!

Check out “How Often Should I Exercise,” on my blog, it may also be of help.

Hi Troy. I agree with you 100 percent. Everybody cheats once in a while. The "cheating everyday" hits the nail square on the head. Were just people doing the best we can! Thankks for adding some reality to our thinking. friend, josh

Troy, thanks for posting! Its the kick in my arse that I need to get back on track. I have been on the Yo-Yo fitness plan for the last 25 years. I was in the best shape of my life at age 47, and now at 52 ( due to building a business, a farm, and life in general ) I've managed to place an extra 30 lbs around my mid section. I received my P90X the other day,and to tell the truth, I'm a little nervous about getting started with it. I watched the first DVD ( Chest and Back ) and was a little intimidated. I'm elated that I came across your profile page and read every word you had to say. Very inspirational! I look forward to this new adventure. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, and I look forward to reading more of your post.

Thanks Duke,

I realize that people are in need of good, honest and straightforward information regarding health and fitness and I also know that my own trial and errors can help people greatly.

Some of the lessons I have learned have come only after tremendous pain, suffering, frustration and precious time wasted that cannot be redeemed.

My only hope is that through our own struggles we can help others in need.
