It's that time of year again..."the Holidays". Along with decorations, music, and gift giving is the parties. The parties can be tricky when you're lifestyle is one of eating clean and regular workouts. The holiday party along with being about family and friends is about the FOOD...and the DRINKS. Some nights just the thought it can make you want to stay home. But it doesn't have to be that way. Whether you are going out to a party or staying home to give a party the are ways to both enjoy yourself and remain true to your lifestyle goals.
Here's a few tips and tricks to help you get through the holiday season without the extra weight gain.
For the Host/Hostess -
1. Be sure to include some no-calorie or low-calorie drink options.
- Holiday tea
- Mineral water with sliced citrus
- Flavored holiday coffee
- Light beer and wine spritzers
2. Serve a fresh fruit and fresh veggie trays.
3. Place small bowls of raw or roasted unsalted nuts
4. Make dips and spreads "cleaner" by substituting cream cheese and sour cream with non-fat Greek yogurt. Strain with cheese cloth to make yogurt thick like cream cheese.
5. Use whole grains for your breads and pastas...at least on some of your dishes.
6. Serve lean meats and fish in your dishes. There are so many options out there to choose from there. From chicken to fish there is something to fit every budget.
7. Be sure to include small and bite sized desserts. Here's a great site that has many clean cookie and dessert recipes that are great anytime of the year. http://ow.ly/3jsz7
8. Use small plates at the buffet table.
For the Party Goer
1, Always start at the fresh fruit and veggie tray and be sure to go light on the spreads and dips. Fill at least half your plate with fruit and veggies.
2. If it's fried just pass it by.
3. Stick with fish or simple chicken for your protein. Be careful of sauces, try instead for plain.
4. Look for whole grains, sweet potatoes, or squash for your starch items. Avoid mashed potatoes with cream and butter.
5. If you MUST have an alcohol drink choose a light beer or wine spritzer. Remember alcohol goes straight to fat.
6. If you MUST have some dessert either pick the smallest piece of your favorite or look for the lightest option available.
Have a fabulous holiday. The holidays are about so much more than the food. :)
