Finding the Right Fit

I haven't been blogging here in a while because I am using my facebook Like page for updates. I'd love to have you join my page at www.facebook.com/F4Lcoach

So I tried another round of P90X starting in January. I did okay for the first few weeks, but I was still in training for a half marathon on Feb 6th so it became easy to make excuses to skip a P90X workout when I had a long run to do -- expecially the legs workout!

I really injured my piriformis (small butt muscle) during the race and was forced to take a break from running and intense exercise for about three weeks, and then I spent a week in Cancun relaxing. The result: weakened Abs/Core which lead to more back pain and other running injuries. Could I have avoided all that by staying with the P90X upper body and Abs workouts? Probably.

So I had to ask myself why I didn't do that. I know better than that! And the answer is, I don't really like all the P90X workouts. They are too long and I have a hard time staying committed when it takes up an hour or more a day on top of my running and building two businesses. And an hour would be nothing if I really enjoyed the work, but I just don't. After all, I can do an hour of TurboFire with no problem, why not an hour of P90X?

So, I am here to tell you that you need to find the best fit for YOU, not just the workout everyone else is doing. And so, today, I went back to ChaLEAN Extreme so I can get my resistance training in a shorter time. And since I am only running for 5ks at this point, I will mix in TurboFire, RevAbs and TurboJam workouts as I feel the urge.

Find what you like and you are more likely to stick with it!

Cheers! Kim

I wish it wasn't about the food

Ever have a bad run of little cheats that add up? Well I just did. I was on the go all weekend and didn't much feel like taking the time to make my healthier foods.

I ran 12.21 miles Saturday morning in grueling heat which burned about 4200 calories. That is more than I burn all day long on a normal workout day, so I tend to let myself go a little off the charts with food on a day like that. The problem is, running in that kind of heat screws up your appetite. I didn't really want to eat a large amount most of the day so I snacked often and mindlessly. Never really got a complete meal and used Shakeology as my justification to not cut up a salad and have veggies.

But then I continued that pattern on Sunday when I didn't run. And that's where I got into trouble.

I wish intense exercise was enough to get the job done. I really do. Even if exercise was 80% of the solution I'd be happy. But it's the reverse --- 80% of the solution is what you eat and when you eat it. If you are eating too  many calories from simple carbs, trouble. If you are not eating enough calories, trouble. If you don't get enough vegetables and fiber, trouble. If you get too much fiber, trouble.

It takes vigilance and planning to get the results you want. Yes, it gets easier over time, and yes, you will eventually get to a place where you don't have to think on it so hard. But when your mind wanders and your hands wanders, snap yourself out of it and get back on track ASAP.

Chalene says it best...an open snack bag is a saddle bag in the making.

The little things Shakeology has done.

I can't say enough good things about Shakeology. If you have not tried it, get some! It's risk free! The big things are easy to spot --- weight loss, fewer cravings, thicker hair, lower cholesterol, better digestion, etc.

But was thinking today about my overall health over the past year since I started using it and there are several "little" things that used to be big things until I didn't have them to complain about any more:

I haven't had a common cold in over a year.

I did not suffer with allergies and molds this Spring and Summer and I know a lot of people who have been laid out for days on end this year. I am usually very sensitive to pollens but read that the astragulus helps with that.

I haven't had a severe headache or migraine since I started using Shakeology regularly.

My chronic insomnia is gone. Just sporadic nights when I can't turn off the brain (like now!)

I recover from intense exercise so much more quickly, that I can do ever-increasing intensity.

So give it a try! What have you got to GAIN in health that isn't worth a risk-free offer?

You Deserve This

I was teaching a class the other night and someone said something about feeling guilty about the hour she spends in class because her daughter has to go to the kid's club.

I asked her if her daughter liked playing with the other kids and she said, "Sure, it's not her that has the problem." So why the guilt? I didn't say much more, but it made me wish that she believed that she deserved this time for herself.

You will be a better parent, spouse, friend, co-worker, whatever when you take the time to take care of your health. Exercise clears the brain, releases toxins and makes the body stronger. All of those make you better in every other area of your life. So carve out the time and OWN it. Doing so will teach your kids that taking care of themselves is a priority and you can raise a generation that will not be overweight or obese.

INSANITY vs. TurboFire

I've tried them both, so what's the difference?

INSANITY is a high intensity cardio workout that will definitely make someone quicker and stronger, and, for most people, leaner. The moves are repeated over and over and there is very little coordination needed to follow the group.

TurboFire is a high intensity cardio workout set to high energy music that will definitely lean you down, especially the core area because of the twisting moves. The music is a critical component of the class so there is more choreography, but doing the steps gives your brain less time to process what you are doing and you are less likely to give yourself a break because you are only doing each move a few times. And Chalene has a new to class program on each DVD to break down and teach the moves.

INSANITY feeds the raw appetite for athletic moves, TurboFire feeds the need for high energy and fun.

INSANITY does not have a modified version for people with neck, back, knee or hip injuries/problems. TurboFire has a low impact modifier in every class, and provides a large enough variety of times classes that someone with issues could start using this program.

Personally, I like INSANITY but love TurboFire. Either one I use, I am a winner for pushing play.
