Is it safe to binge on Halloween candy during pregnancy?

For most pregnant women, dipping into the Halloween stash at the office or your older child's trick-or-treat bag isn’t a problem.

Gobbling some chocolate bars and candy corn will indeed elevate your blood sugar level, but it'll return to normal once insulin picks up the glucose and carries it to your body’s cells. Taking a nice long walk after a candy binge is a healthy strategy, because exercise improves blood glucose levels.

You may experience a burst of fetal movement as your baby reacts to the influx of sugar. That’s why ob-gyns often suggest doing kick counts about an hour after having a snack or glass of juice.

Here are a few things to consider when deciding how often and how much to indulge in candy and other sweets while you're pregnant:

  • I’m a big fan of putting chocolate and other candies in the freezer right after Halloween — out of sight, out of mind. They’re not so readily accessible, but you can still have an occasional treat. If you just can’t keep your hands off the sweet stuff, take it to your office or donate unopened bags to a food shelter.
  • Research shows that taste preference is influenced while your baby is developing. So if you have a very sweet diet during pregnancy, your child will also favor sugary foods. To counteract this effect, make sure you take in plenty of other foods and flavors (cauliflower and brussels sprouts, for instance).
  • Another reason to keep candy binges in check: Sugar can make you more susceptible to an annoying yeast infection. Yeast infections happen when the yeast that normally lives in your vagina multiplies and overwhelms other microorganisms. These itchy infections are more common during pregnancy because vaginal secretions increase in sugar, which provides lots of food for the yeast.
  • If you’re one of the 3 to 5 percent of pregnant women who develop gestational diabetes (GDM), you’ll want to avoid sugary goodies altogether.
Put Fear Aside

As I was driving today on a four lane highway, there were 3 lanes crowded with cars and the fourth lane appeared to be empty. Initially I thought that maybe there was construction going on in the fourth lane and since I don't watch the news in the morning, there wasn't a way for me to confirm this. I also didn't want to check the traffic out on my phone while I was driving.  So I took a chance, threw caution to the wind and got in the fourth open lane.  To my surprise, there wasn't any construction going on nor was there anything holding up this lane.  Only a handful of people attempted to get in this lane also and most of the cars stayed in the first three lanes.  Why weren't more people checking this lane out?  Even if the lane was held up or under construction, how couldn't others take a chance on getting out of the gridlock of waiting in traffic.  Then something a successful person told me a long time ago came to my mind.  People who have become successful have done so because they have simply taken a chance.  What keeps most people from being successful? Fear.  Fear is an emotion that if it isn't controlled will prevent you from taking any risks and seeing what life has to offer.  Later I tuned in to the national beachbody coach call and Carl Daikeler ended the call speaking about Fear. I realized that this was my message for the day. At times I am my own worst enemy because I know I am capable of being successful but I let fear get the best of me. Health and fitness are my passion, not to mention helping others so if I have an opportunity to grow financially while living my life's passion, why would there be any fear?  Why would I have a fear of success?  Fear is a drag, a life killer which leads to quitting. There isn't a good enough reason of why I should continue to let Fear get the best of me.  So today I have decided to put that fear aside and push forward full force.  I am proud to be a Beachbody Coach where I can grow my own fitness business and help others do the same.  Put your fear aside today and take control of your life. If you never take a risk then you will never know what success feels like.

Working Out While Pregnant

As I approach 21 weeks of my pregnancy, I am amazed at the comments that I hear from people who say that they don't want to get pregnant because they are afraid of getting fat and not being able to lose the weight. I was even more amazed to hear this from individuals in the fitness field.  Being pregnant should be a joyous time as it is truly a blessing and miracle from God, it shouldn't be about vanity. Don't get me wrong, there are times when I have felt as big as a whale and didn't feel sexy at all but I wouldn't want to not have a child for fear of gaining weight. 

So I continue to workout as it makes me feel good and gives me the necessary energy I need to get through the day.  My workout usually includes a 3-4 mile walk and/or a low impact Beachbody workout like Slim in 6 or Body Gospel. I love how all of the Beachbody workouts have modifications so I can still benefit from a great workout.  As I share my workout lifestyle with my friends and family I am often asked should I be working out for fear that I may be harming my baby.  Before I do anythiing, I check with my doctor to make sure it's ok.  I even checked with her about Shakeology.  I love Shakeology and drink it everyday but I made sure to get the doctor's approval before continuing to consume it.  Let's face it this is my third child so I am not new to being a parent and I would never do anything to put my children in arms way.  I just love to workout and consume things that are healthy.  The body is a temple and I want to treat it as such. Just like every morning I get down on my knees to pray and go into the bathroom to brush my teeth, working out is simply a part of my life.  Both of my children were born by C-section delivery and the second go around was a lot harder to get rid of the weight. My second child is 5 and I was determined not to accept the fate that I would never achieve my pre-pregnancy weight ever again.  I worked out to Turbo Jam, Slim in 6, Power 90 and I got through 8 weeks of P90X before finding out I was pregnant with my third child. 

Being pregnant does not mean that you have to give up, you just have to modify. I have my weird cravings and I definitely have my cheat days but I feel like I am in great shape and will continue to be after I deliver. 

The checkout lines at the supermarket are flooded with magazine covers of celebrity moms and their story of how they lost all the baby weight so quickly.  However most of these celebrity mothers have reality shows that has taped their mania and the stress that they put on themselves to get to a certain weight or look to shoot for that cover and they fill the pages up with false statements of how they achieved that stellar body with the help of photo shop no less.  There are some however who have been successful with great weight loss after pregnancy and it is those individuals who ate healthy all throughout their pregnancy and did some form of exercise while pregnant so that once delivery had come and gone, the body wasn't in shock and continued to do what it was used to doing. 

Nothing in life that is worth achieving is easy. If your goal is to reach a certain weight or fitness level then take small steps to achieve your goal and surround yourself around individuals who will help you get there. So I will continue to workout, eat healthy, and encourage others to do the same, but most importantly I will continue to listen to my body and not overdue it.

A Goal Completed

Turbo Jam is one of my favorite workout programs. It is packed with kickboxing moves set to great music that just makes you want to Jam. Not to mention all of the Elite 11 moves work your core. The more I worked out with Turbo Jam, the more I improved and the workouts became even more fun. I had found my soulmate workout program and I felt like Chalene Johnson, creator of Turbo Jam, was a friend in my head along with the rest of the crew like Mindy, Monica and Anna Rita to name a few. Once I became a beachbody coach, I started joining social media sites and I found Chalene on a few of them. I started following her on twitter and she followed me right back. Wow this person in the workout video appears to be genuine as the rest of the crew. They are very warm, personable, and always available to give an answer.  I found out that there is a gym version of Turbo Jam called Turbokick and that Chalene's company, Powder Blue, offers certifications to teach this format. WOW. I was blown away. I had been a fitness instructor prior to having my children and I knew I wanted to get back to doing that but didn't know where to start.  For months a put it off thinking that I wasn't in good enough shape to get certified until I spoke with Jennelle, Chalene's sister.  She told me that I could instruct my class based on my own fitness level. So now I was ready and looking for a training near me because I wanted to teach this great format.  In August of 2009, I found out that Chalene herself was going to certify instructors in Miami. I knew I had to be there. Unfortunately my first cousin was getting married that weekend and wanted me to be a part of his day. From then on there didn't seem to be any trainings in my area but I knew I was ready to drive because this was a goal on my to do list that I was anxious to scratch off. I checked the training calendar and there was a training scheduled in Philly. I knew this was my time. I scheduled immediately and my trainer was awesome.  The day was packed with great workouts and I enhanced my elite 11 skills. At the end of the day I was so excited that I was now part of the Powder Blue family.  In about two weeks I received my results and found out that I had passed.  I am now a certified turbokick instructor.  I am so happy that I have fulfilled one of my goals.  But it doesn't stop there. I am going to learn her two other formats, PIYO and Hip Hop Hustle.  My next big goal is to become a presenter for Powder Blue and certify others in these awesome formats.  Life without passion and goals is not living.
