I have a goal. In fact, I have several of them. As I write this, I'm not sure which one I want to focus on next. Do I want to focus on my workouts? Weight loss/maintanance? Do I want to work on strength building? Or, perhaps I don't even want to focus on anything exercise-related at all. I have other goals not related to exercise, like finishing my novel or finding ways to make more money.
Although it's good to have goals in life -- and I firmly believe in having them AND writing them down -- if you're like me, it can be overwhelming at times. There's just so much you might want to get accomplished and not enough time to do it all. It's enough to make you want to throw in the towel and sit on the couch being all lazy, eating crap, and generaly not being good to yourself. Like it's an impossible hill to climb.
That's when it's important, I think, to turn to your support structure for motivation. Whether that be reading a fitness or muscle magazine or book, reading posts on the Beachbody Website, listening to inspiring music, or, hey, watching -- for the millionith time even -- a P90X or whatever infomercial, take the time to step back and reevaluate what is important to you and focus on what you want to achieve. Perhaps it's time to put some of those goals on the back burner for now and concentrate on what's attainable in the here and now. Don't worry, it will come. Just tell yourself that, and don't give up.
Last year, I wrote out a list of 10 things I wanted to accomplish. Guess what, I maybe accomplished 4 of the 10. Normally, I would have stressed about that. In fact, I guess I'm feeling a little guiltly about it, now. But recently, 6 months after the "deadline" for th year, I actually got one of last year's goals done. Normally, I would be like "well, that's still 5 from last year that didn't get done plus what I've got to do this year. Instead, I'm pledging to adopt a new attitude this year. I'm celebrating my successes, however small. I deserve a pat on the back, and I'm going to give myself one.
If you've got goals, write them down, and celebrate each one that you achieve. Don't focus on what you haven't done -- only on what you HAVE done. Celebrate your successes.
