Fit Club begins next week

Fit Club '11:  Cardio Collection

 

Fire up 2011 with a free weekly class that uses cardio and strength-building moves designed to improve your overall fitness. Each week will feature a different workout from the Beachbody collection which will vary from Dance to Kick Boxing to High Intensity Intervals. Explore popular programs such as P90X, Brazil Butt Lift, Hip Hop Abs, and Turbo Fire, and see how muscle confusion can help build stamina and strength. A low-impact version of all exercises will be provided. If you join us, please bring water and a towel suitable for cushioning during stretches, and make sure you have your doctor's approval. Drop-ins welcome if you call ahead.  See you in Fit Club!

Hello workout buddies!

Great SuperSaturday event yesterday Jan 8 in the Boston area including a workout with Kit, Tony Horton's sister.  Kudos to the New England Coaches for organizing a motivating kick-off to 2011 which luckily coincided with my team's 90 day round start up.

Spices pack powerful nutrition punch

Hello buddies!

I took November off from the blog due to other good opportunities in the blogoshere, so let's spice it up....

Did you know herbs and spices contain not only flavor but powerful nutrients?  What we today consider a tasty recipe ingredient in ancient times might have been a vital aid in warding off disease.

 

Cloves and ginger are very potent, and although it’s hard to get pure cinnamon, even a ground brand is high on the list of providing health benefits.  Try these spices on oatmeal, toast and granola.

 

For savory dishes, consider turmeric.  It goes well in stews, and livens up rice (brown rice of course!) –just add a ½ teaspoon or more to the cooking water.

 

Red peppers including paprika among other good things fight harmful inflammation in our bodies.

 

Herbs such as rosemary are beneficial, but the superstar is oregano, not only does it contain anti-bacterial properties, but a USDA study found it has the highest amount of anti-oxidants of all culinary herbs and nearly all fruits and vegetables.

ACV Inexpensive weight loss aid

You’ll rarely hear about this because it doesn’t stand to make a corporation any money.  Apple cider vinegar dissolves fats in the blood vessels the way it cuts grease on a window, and fights unhealthy bacteria in the digestive system.  Two tablespoons a day can lower cholesterol as it flushes away fats.  If the taste is an obstacle, there are capsules or tablets of apple cider vinegar, but then you’d have to cross out the word ‘inexpensive’ to get the equivalent of 2 T/day.  It's natural and costs pennies a day.

Quick healthy vegetables recipe

Steam vegetables until tender-crisp, about 3-5 minutes in microwave or 5-10 minutes on stovetop.  Times are approximate and vary by vegetable so check often during steaming.

Drain or shake off excess water.

Toss the warm veggies in a couple tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil.

Sprinkle lightly with herbed salts and pepper to taste and toss again.  Serve immediately.

 

For flavor variety, some toppings are unsalted pine nuts, sliced almonds, pistachios, sesame seeds, and sunflower seeds. 

Or reduce the salt and add sliced olives, capers or feta cheese.

If you need to watch calories and salt, good toppings are fresh lemon, balsamic vinegar, low-sodium tamari sauce, minced/pressed garlic or the white part of sliced scallions.
