P90X Week 2 Rewind

I am very please with Week 2. It had the potential to be bad week filled with pitfalls, but I had other plans. It was my husband’s birthday and our wedding anniversary so we went out to dinner three nights this week. It’s very easy to go over on your calories when you eat out, but we were very conscious that our goals were more important than splurging so we made informed food selections by checking out the nutritional info online before heading out. We also track our calories so we accounted for what went into our mouths.

This effort paid off. I lost the 2 pounds I gained last week and lost nearly another pound. Nice to see the scale moving in the opposite direction.

The thing I am most proud of is realizing how much progress I really made when my husband and I were getting ready to head out on Saturday for Hollywood Studios. Since the high was going to be around 82 degrees, I really didn’t want to burn up because I was relegated to wearing jeans. I went through a storage container that had a number of pants and shorts that are too small for me right now. I pulled out my camouflage cargo shorts just to see how they would fit. I hadn’t worn these shorts in well over a year because they were really tight around the thighs and I couldn’t button them anymore.  Well this past weekend when I put them on, they were comfortable in the thighs and I could button and zip them up easily. Holy crap!

The real test was whether they were comfortable when I was sitting. So I sat on the edge of the bed and they still felt good. Sat on the steps to put on my shoes so we could leave, no issue. I was giddy and inspired to continue building on this momentum.

I also increased the intensity of my workouts this week. I went up in reps or weights on the majority of the weight workouts. I also completed Legs & Back without issue. I made sure not to go so deep on the lunges and squats and it felt like the right thing to do. I still managed to burn a bunch of calories even though I couldn’t go deep so I am not in any way upset that I couldn’t be like the folks in the video.

I am incredibly excited: weight loss and now being able to break back into old clothes.

Missed/Substituted Workouts

This week, I replaced Yoga X with another video from a different series: Turbo Jam. I wore my heart rate monitor which is calibrated to me. during the workout. According to my heart rate monitor, I burned 619 calories during the Cardio Party Mix 1 video. Sweet! Felt good and it was a lot of fun.

I was supposed to do Kenpo X on Saturday, but after spending half the day at Hollywood Studios, when I got home, I was exhausted. I then decided to switch the days for Rest and Kenpo X so Saturday was my rest day and Kenpo X was finished on Sunday even though and bumps up against Chest and Back for Week 3. Gotta do what I gotta do.  I have built up a lot of momentum and I don’t want to lose it by missing workouts.

This was my first time doing Kenpo and I just wasn’t into it for the first half of the workout. I guess I was just tired from having been tackling my to-do list all day. I gave myself a mental chat and then focused in on the workout. It paid off. By the time the cool down started, I had burned 589 calories. The positive self-talk was all I needed.

Overall

I feel pretty proud of this week. I ate smart, got more active, increased the intensity of my workouts a bit, and am seeing compounded measurable progress. I’m really happy, very excited and curious to see what happens at the end of Week 3.

P90X Week 1 Rewind

This past week was my acclimation week; getting used to the P90X workouts. Getting acclimated doesn’t mean lack of soreness though. I was plenty sore anyway. By Day 4, most of the soreness had subsided, but it was also the day I hurt myself.

I am a desk jockey. I don’t really do much with my legs let alone any real squatting or lunging movements. Since I was feeling so good, I did full on regular lunges and squats which I really shouldn’t have done since my body is not accustomed to these movements. A quarter of the way into Legs and Back, I could feel my left glute start to ball up because going up and down the steps to get to the chin up bar was getting a little uncomfortable. My ego kept urging me on. When I got to the half way point of Legs and Back which is the 3-Way Lunge, I did the first lunge and I was done for. Me left glute said to me “Hell no!” I strained it. So I stopped, stretched, and then had some recovery drink.

I was pretty ticked at myself. I shouldn’t have gotten overzealous and gone so deep on the lunges and squats. I should have only gone half way because I have 11 more weeks to get to the full lunge and squat point. Actually I could have more time if I elect after this around to do a second round of P90X. I have to remind myself that even though I’m really excited about getting to the destination I have envisioned inside my head, I do have limitations that I have to respect and that I also need to appreciate the journey as it’s happening.

Missed/Substituted Workouts

Being presently at around 250lbs and having weak wrists at the moment, doing yoga is not a recipe of happiness for my wrists. I think at some point I’ll be able to do yoga, but for right now, I need to get rid of some extra baggage and strengthen my wrists and forearms before that can happen. During most of the week, I work from home. However, on Wednesday which is when Yoga X is scheduled, I made it a point to walk to and from work which is roughly a half mile each way so that was my workout. In the future, I may do cardio video to rival the calorie burn of Yoga X. For now though it may just be walking.

I did miss doing Kenpo, but I am okay with it. I wasn’t inactive the day I was supposed to do it. I spent that day at Disney World walking around Magic Kingdom and EPCOT. According to my pedometer which is very accurate, I walked over 13,000 steps which is the equivalent of almost 5.5 miles. Taking into consideration my weight, I burned about 690 calories just by walking which is a little more than I would have burned doing Kenpo. So the walking at the park was my exercise for the day.

Overall

Results wise, the scale has gone up by 2lbs, but I’m not really concerned about that since my measurements came down some, particularly in my lower body. This means that my body is going through some recomposition changes and that for a while, the scale is going to be misleading so I’m not going to be putting a lot of trust in it.

Physically I feel good. I noticed that my flexibility and mobility is definitely improving. I had previously had problems with being able to turn my head around enough when looking back while while pulling the car out of a parking space or checking my blind-spot before changing lanes. I don’t drive to during the week so it was really obvious how this had changed when I drove to visit my mom yesterday. I don’t have to strain anymore to look behind me. That made me happy. I’ll be super happy when I get to the point where I’m able to tie my shoes like a normal person.

I hit my calorie goals just fine for each day, but my overall nutrition could definitely use some improvement. I’m not rushing it though or doing a complete 180 on my nutrition. One thing at a time; small incremental changes like eating out less this week so that way it becomes a lifelong habit.

I am expecting week 2 to be equally successful.
