There is a lot of mania in how we think about food. If you watch the TV commercials or listen to the radio, we are constantly bombarded with this weird "relationship" we are supposed to have with food. It's as if food is the "life of the party" and without THEIR particular food at the center of your attention, you are going to be a lesser person or have an unhappy life.
Now I have been coaching for the past several months for BeachBody and I have run into a pattern that I think is worth addressing. For my series of posts on Diet and Nutrition, including some of my famous recipes for meals that I make, check out my blog at www.timsP90Xchallenge.blogspot.com.
But I want to preface my last five or so posts on that site by discussing the mindset that I think is healthy when considering food in general.
Specifically, I encourage people to think about the long term. I'm not talking about 90 days of eating healthy. That isn't long term. As a matter of fact, that is very short term.
I am talking about the rest of your life.
I am not a big fan of doing things just for a little while when if comes to healthy and fitness. I think that too many people think that they are going to just jump into this P90X or Insanity program (or any of the BeachBody workouts) and they are going to be completely transformed just like in the infomercials. But that isn't true.
Eating correctly is a big part of the plan, so BeachBody is smart enough to send everyone a very professionally planned out and presented Nutrition Guide that outlines how we are supposed to eat properly to fuel the workouts that we are following. Frankly, the Nutrition Guideline is stunningly on target. You can do the workouts, but unless you are also making healthier and better choices at the table every day, you are going to be penalizing yourself and you will not get the same results that you would if you actually watched what you eat.
But several of the people that I coach have been asking a lot of questions about what they can and what the can't eat. Specifically, there has been a real outbreak of people who keep saying stuff like "I can't have this" or "I can't touch that or else I'll get fat and I don't want to do that!"
So here is my advise: get it in your head immediately and ingrain it in there.
I don't do anything that isn't PERMANENTLY sustainable.
That means that my diet (which consists of 3000 calories per day) is a variety of all kinds of foods including stuff that isn't good for you.
I'm talking about the fact that I eat about 3/4 of a pound of Dove Silk Promises Milk Chocolate pieces per week even though I am an exercise maniac.
I'm talking about the fact that I will still eat a Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese once every 3 months and enjoy every morsel of it.
I'm talking about the fact that I enjoy pizza once in a while on a Saturday night.
But I have a healthy mindset when it comes to food.
You see, I could very well eat bean sprouts and tofu every day for a while. I could be militant about avoiding red meat and not eating chocolate for months on end.
But IT ISN'T SUSTAINABLE! I will NOT give those things up in the long term.
Therefore, I don't completely avoid them. As a matter of fact, I enjoy them.
But I enjoy them in moderation. For example, when I have the chocolate (which is every week), I am talking just a little over an ounce per day on average. That isn't very much.
I have pizza about once every two months, on average. I have the McDonald's hamburger once per quarter, on average. I eat fillet mignon (lean steak) about once per month.
I enjoy variety in my diet. And you want to know why?
Because it is a long term approach to nutrition that I can sustain in the long term. And yes, I eat bean sprouts and tofu, chicken and turkey like a job and obscene amounts of fruits and vegetables.
But I also drink Coke Zero/Diet Coke like it is going out of sty;e. Ya know why?
Because I like it and there is NO material difference in the nutritional value or Coke Zero or Diet Coke than plain old water....and I think it tastes better.
Anyway, check out my blog at www.timsP90Xchallenge.blogspot.com and look at my last 5 or 6 posts for much more information about Diet and Nutrition.
