Workout at the Beach, Blog #5 “Preparing for a round of P90X”

Since I will be starting P90X again in a couple of weeks and I plan to workout at the beach at least once a week on the beaches of the Outer Banks, NC  I thought this would be a good time to start preparing for my next round, especially since I kind of winged it the first time.  That is what I usually do with a lot of things in my life but I would like to start planning and being more organized these days.  This will be a challenge for me!  Lol…  So over the next couple of weeks I will be explaining what to expect, how to prepare, go over the results of my first round of P90X and show the P90X transformation I achieved from the last 106 days via pictures, my worksheets, measurements and fit test.

Who is P90X for?

It is for pretty much anyone who has done some regular form of exercise recently like Power 90, Slim in 6 or you participate in sports etc. Refer to your Fitness Guide provided with your program.   There is a fit test you can take that is included with the workout program that goes over the minimum required reps for most of the exercises you will be doing over the course of 90 days.   I highly recommend you do the fit test not only to see if you have the capabilities to do P90X but also so when you have completed your program you can see how much you have improved!  I can’t wait to see the results of my fit test after I am done in a couple of days!

Do you really have to read the Fitness Guide…YES, YES and YES…That is if you what to get the best results you can.

What can you expect?

Well to get in the best shape of your life, develop skills, coordination and flexibility.  In my case I got stronger, my posture greatly improved, better coordination, lost weight, increased flexibility and I can hit a golf ball about 10-15 more yards than I did before starting Nov. 1, 2011…  A better understanding of how to eat smart and make healthier food choices to fuel your body not just eat whatever you want.

How does P90X get you there?

Two words “muscle confusion” It provides a extensive variety of different moves that take time to master and it continually challenges the body’s muscles into new growth.  The more you confuse the muscle, the harder our body has to work to keep up; the more variety you put into your workout, the better and faster your results will be.  It uses an Adaptive and Mastery phase followed by a Recovery phase which allows muscles to recover to peak strength, so you’re ready for the intensity of the next adaptive phase.  You have 3 adaptive/mastery phases and 3 recovery phases.  In these phases you will 1.  Use resistance for muscle tone and growth. 2.  Execute isometric and dynamic body weight exercises for strength and power.  3.  Perform yoga, martial arts, gymnastics, and Pilates moves for coordination, balance, flexibility, core stabilization and cardiovascular efficiency.  4.  Burn fat and expose your 6-pack.  By presenting so many complex and challenging movements, P90X forces you to continually adapt, ensuring new muscle growth and strength gains.   Refer to your Fitness guide for more on this subject.

Nutrition

Just like the unique workout approach they include a nutrition plan which is comprehensive yet surprisingly easy to follow.  If you want to get the best and most effective results you must follow the nutrition plan.  I myself did not follow the plan exactly but did try to eat healthy and control my calories.  Since I did my first full round during the holidays I cheated.  In the next round I will show you how to get ready and use the Nutrition guide to help you achieve the best results you and I can by following the system provided by Beachbody!

Your success with P90X hinges on 3 things.

  1.  Variety- This program provides plenty of that.
  2. Intensity-Tony will show you how to focus on certain techniques that will help you reach “the line” without going over it.  Then it’s up to you to Bring It!
  3. Consistency- you must Keep Pushing Play six days a week.  Missing workouts, eating well only on occasion, and forgetting to take your supplements will adversely affect your energy, recovery and results.

Over the next few days I will show you the results of my first round, you know the round in which I did not follow the 3 things that will make your P90X transformation a success.  Then I will show you how to prepare for your round so you will have the tools to do those 3 things to make our next round of P90X a great success!   How will I do this?  Well I will go through all the steps you need  to do to get prepared for P90X,  like you’re before and after body measurements and photos, show you how to take the fit test, what supplements you should consider and go over the nutrition guide.  Then the fun begins as we take on this challenge, stay consistent and actually workout at the beach!

Workout at the Beach Blog #4 “Fitting in activities like Golf into your P90X routine”

P90X is a time consuming workout regime but I still try to get some fun activities that also incorporate movement and extra calories to be burned.  My favorite choice is golf at The Nags Head Golf Links but during the winter it can be hard to fit in here on the Outer Banks.  Often this time of year it is cold and very windy.   We bundle up, use cart covers and even wear a silly hat to keep us warm.   Yesterday it looked like the weather was not going to corporate for us today in order to get a round in but low and behold the sun came out and the wind settled down just long enough to get nine holes in before the wind, rain and possible snow arrived!  We rarely get snow here on the Outer Banks.  After my round I relaxed with friends and then went home to do Kenpo.  So that makes only 3 more workouts for my first round of P90X!  Stretch tomorrow…Hopefully the weather will warm up enough to actually workout at the beach!

Workout at the Beach, Blog #3 “Adult Peer Pressure”

Workout at the Beach, Blog #3 “Adult Peer Pressure”

My workout at the Beach today will be Core Synergistics!  I haven’t done it yet still waiting for my dinner to settle.  We went out with friends for dinner. Once I am done with it only 4 workouts left for my first round for my P90X Transformation to be complete! Core is hard for me I really lack the muscles to do the workout well but I am getting stronger every time I do the workout.  I am hoping by the end of my second round I can do a Dreya Roll.  LOL

Today I’d like to discuss the issue of what I call “Adult Peer Pressure” Over the last 100 days I have avoided certain social events, going out with friends even golfing due to this issue.  We are constantly telling our children not to give into “peer pressure” all the time.  You see TV ads, special news stories and the list goes on about how today’s kids are bombarded with the pressure of fitting in and doing what everyone else is doing these days.  Yet as adults we do it to each other all the time maybe even more.  For me this has been even more prevalent since I have move to the Outer Banks of  NC.  Now  that I live in a vacation area where we all kind of feel like we are on vacation when we are off work. Some more so because they are retired.  The only problem with that is I still having 20 years or more before I am due to retire, something has to give.  Is it will power that I am lacking or is it that you just give in because that’s what everyone else is doing?  I am not sure but right now will power doesn’t work to well for me  Lol.  I enjoy the social aspect and a beer or two well maybe more than that.  The problem is out could be 2-4 times a week especially during the spring and summer. There is nothing better than a cold beer after a round of golf for that matter during my round of golf.   My point to all this is if I chose to have water sometimes I don’t need someone saying oh Sharon one beer won’t kill you but it’s usually not just one beer when the day/evening is all said and done.  I am not saying that I can’t say no but sometimes it’s just easier  go along with what everyone else is doing.  Not that everyone does this but enough do including me but why?  Not really sure why but I have been trying to not do that so much lately as I have been guilty of persuading many a friend into having a drink or two.  Can anyone say Skittle Vodka or Jello shots?  To go along with this thought on Alcohol I want to tie it into how it effects our workouts and our results.  A new friend and fellow coach wrote a great blog post on alcohol consumption and the effect it has on muscle building that I think goes great with this subject so I am including it here.  Her blog post now has me thinking before I have a beer or glass of wine since I want to succeed in my P90X transformation.  I thank her for taking the time to research this subject so please take a look at her information on the subject here.  The good thing for me is I still have a few months till the season of fun a temptation really peaks here on The Outer Banks!  And let me make it clear that I am not going to totally avoid alcohol but I will choose the days I partake a little bit more carefully and limit the amount.  Like maybe only on my rest/stretch day or Kenpo certainly not on my weight days after reading Carmen's information on the subject...  Off to do Core for my workout at the beach!

Workout at the Beach Blog #2 “YogaX and YouTube Thursday “

Well my workout today almost didn’t happen.  I got busy with work and almost passed on doing it but since I only have 6 workouts left on for my P90x transformation to be complete for my first round I forced myself to do it.  So I am happy to say I did my YogaX today! I have said it before one of the hardest thing for me is to just put on my workout clothes and shoes.  Once I do that it’s just a matter of putting in the DVD and pushing play. You know not too long ago I would have just said to myself “I can do a double workout tomorrow” LOL you know that never really happens. Why do we tell ourselves such lies?  So I am happy to say now I am down to 5 workouts!

Since its You Tube Thursday I thought I would give you all a tour of where I will be doing some of my workouts.  I drove the 0.4 miles over to the beach.  I know what you are thinking, why drive such a short distance?  Well I had to be somewhere by 5 so I did not have time to walk.  Now this is my very first You Tube video and I was short on time so the quality of the video and the enthusiasm of my voice are not really showing through.  And my script needs some serious work.  I figure a poorly produced video is better than none.  I hope you enjoy it and promise the next one will be better.  The scenery is nice so maybe that will make up for my lack of enthusiasm.  As I mention in the Video I well be videoing Kempo and Yoga on the beach hopefully when the weather gets warmer.  Not sure when I will get up early enough to do it while the sun is rising as anyone who really knows me is actually laughing out loud at the notion of me getting my butt out of bed before the sun rises.  I have lived here for almost 10 years and  it was just a few days ago that I saw my first sunrise here on the Outer Banks and that only happened because I went over to the beach after I got off working the night shift!  With the days getting longer it’s only going to get harder for me not to mention Daylight savings time! Click here for You Tube video Joking aside I will do a Sunrise video just not saying exactly when but hopefully soon.  Thanks for all the kind words about my first blog yesterday “Workout at the Beach”, My first post for my new blog!

“Workout at the Beach”, My First Post for my new blog!

Hi, my name is Sharon Schisler and welcome to my new blog Workout at the Beach! This is my first ever blog post.  My goal is to help people live healthier lives by sharing my P90X fitness transformation in a fun and entertaining way.  I live on the Outer Banks of NC which is a beautiful beach resort with tons of history and 105 miles of beautiful beaches.  How might you ask am I going to make my transformation fun?  Well check back often and you will find out.  I promise you, you will not be disappointed.  But first things first…a little back ground on how I got started on this workout journey.

About 5 years ago I was seeking a way to get fit.  I had purchased an exercise DVD Slim in 6 a few years prior so I pulled that out to try again.  “try again”  a favorite term of mine…LOL…I thought to myself I need more than just a DVD so I went on line to get extra help and discovered Million Dollar Body and message boards that support people using Beachbody products.  With the support of a Slim in 6 message board thread I was able to lose 26 lbs. and 13 inches in 6 weeks!  I did another round and lost some more but soon reverted back to over eating and not exercising.  This pattern continued for several years.  I would start then stop for one reason or the other, the Holidays are coming, The Holidays are here, I have guests visiting, I hurt my foot and every other excuse you can think of has caused me to start and stop at least 10 times over the past 5 years doing various Beachbody workouts including Slim Series, P90X, Chalean Extreme (I did complete this one once) Rev Abs and Brazil Butt Lift to name a few.   Sometimes I got through a full 30 days.  Kidding aside I had the best intentions of completing the programs and staying on track but like most of the country I continued to yoyo. I hope posting my story will help me and others stay on track once and for all.

Now fast forward to Nov. 1, 2011 which signifies New Beginnings.   In 7 days I will have completed my first full round of P90X which will have taken me more than 90 days to finish, 106 days to be exact. Yes, I missed a few workouts, had a few extra rest days and didn't eat or drink all the right stuff but I still had positive results.  I will post these results in a couple of weeks including pictures.

This is a new beginning in my fitness, health and business.  Nothing in life happens to a tee but we must keep going if we want to be successful and achieve our goals in life.  This blog will be about my journey of achieving my goals while helping others achieve their fitness and health goals.  I hope you will join me, encourage me and follow me through this journey. I will recap the last 106 days over the next few weeks and show how I will prepare for my next round which I will start either March 1st or March 5th.   I hope to educate, motivate and encourage you by posting my story here using words, video, pictures and an occasional Ustream... by having a Workout at the Beach!
