People still working towards their goal often think that they can’t be a coach until they lose another 20 pounds, are ripped or have 6 pack abs. This is probably one of the biggest misconceptions of people looking at the coaching opportunity. If this is you, READ ON!!
I started coaching just 45 days into Round 1 of P90X. My friends started seeing a difference in my figure after a few weeks of doing P90X. My status updates were about working out and P90X and people were asking me about my progress. I started hearing about the coaching opportunity and thought it sounded like something I would really enjoy doing. I was already talking about the program and eating better and inspiring people to be healthier – I never felt like I was “selling” anything – everything was honest, MY experience, why I loved it, how it helped ME, etc., and without having any pressure of HAVING to sell anything OR buy anything it completely took the pressure off of me.
Sometimes I actually feel like I am not the best coach I can be because I can’t relate to those who have a harder journey than I have. I have never had to lose more than about 5 or 10 pounds. I don’t have an unhealthy relationship with food. I don’t have kids so I have no post pregnancy weight to lose. Working out and eating healthy comes pretty naturally for me – I enjoy it.
So what am I getting at? People who can relate to a wide majority of people make AWESOME coaches! If you struggle with your weight, manage kids, spouse, job, hate cooking and love sweets BUT you press play, you make small changes to your nutrition plan, and you commit to your program and are seeing changes then coaching could ABSOLUTELY be for you!
Do you know how inspired I am by contestants on The Biggest Loser? I see them working out, learning about healthy habits, losing weight, dealing with emotional issues from loss to abuse, struggling some weeks (how many times have we seen a contestant only lose 1 or 2 pounds a week after practically killing themselves all week long?!). I honestly watch the show while working out and I push harder. If they can complete a marathon, so can I. If they can push harder, so can I. If they can change their habits, so can I. Someone already ripped, who can do one handed push ups, do 30 pull ups, eats a Vegan diet and has no kids is also GREAT inspiration – they push me as well – but do I believe that I can achieve what they have? Some days yes, some days no. Am I making sense?
A Beachbody Coach needs to be working at their goals. It helps hold both the company and the Coach accountable. Coaching is an incredible accountability tool!
Many people sign up as Coaches just to get the discount on products like Shakeology, Results and Recovery Drink, and of course all the programs. And that is FINE too! Some people don’t even announce that they are a Coach to the rest of their friends and family. Again, this is fine also! (I don’t recommend it, but the great thing is that a Coach can make this business whatever they want!) So let’s say you start using Shakeology and want to start getting it for $89.95 instead of $119.95 and start drinking it at work for lunch or a healthy snack and your workmate asks about it, you give her a sample, she loves it and buys it from your website, well you just made a sale and a commission by SHARING your Shakeology with your friend, not by selling it. If this happens 3 times you basically just paid for your bag of Shakeology. It just makes sense, doesn’t it?
So to sum up ~ “Regular” people make awesome Coaches because people can relate to them. Coaches need to be a product of the product – if you are still working at your goal that is just fine - it makes you REAL and people will be able to RELATE to you. This business is about building Relationships! Not about making sales :)
~ Coaches don’t need to sell or grow their business if they don’t want to – “coaching” just for the discount is completely OK! (Some coaches started out just for the discount and later decided to grow and EXPLODE their business!) Make it what YOU want it to be.
~ Coaching is an awesome accountability tool! It keeps me moving and eating right because I know people look up to me and follow my lead.
Hope that helped to clear up any misconceptions on who can and should be coaches! If you have ANY questions about coaching or are considering it please let me know!
When I signed up to be a coach back in July one of the FIRST things I did was google: "Is Beachbody Coaching a scam". I went out LOOKING for people who had negative experiences with it - and guess what - I didn't find any glaring negative reviews of the coaching program. There was no hidden fees, no feeling of being trapped, no stories of "they just kept charging me" or "I have a garage full of product I can't sell".
The other day Carl Daikeler posted a short note on facebook about having a conversation with someone about coaching. The conversation went something like this:
Carl: Have you thought about coaching?
P90X user: Nah, I don't want to get involved with a MLM
Carl: Well, let me ask you this, have you ever recommended it to anyone?
P90X user: Yeah, I recommended it to people ALL the time
Carl: So basically you are doing it already, just not getting paid for it.
I want to share this with you if you have doubts about Beachbody Coaching and clear up some fiction with some facts.
The following I can't take credit for, and unfortunately I can't give credit where credit is due as I don't konw who the original author is, but it is too good not to share! So enjoy!!
One of our problems is dealing with the negativity surrounding the reputation of the phrases “pyramid scheme”, “network marketing”. “multi-level marketing (MLM)” or “direct selling business”.
First of all, the grand daddy of them all, Amway, went under very serious, expensive and prolonged investigation into this sort of activity back in the early 70’s. The results proved that Amway was not a “pyramid scheme” (which is illegal) and paved the way for the whole multi-level marketing industry that has boomed over the past 35 years.
In Quixtar’s (the current name used for the Amway distributor business) Business Rules and Regulations it states:
“A pyramid is a scheme in which an individual pays for the right to recruit additional persons into the scheme who, in turn, receive the same right to receive profits from recruiting others.
Three common elements of a pyramid scheme have been identified as: (1) a large, required initial investment or purchase of inventory: (2) direct payment for recruiting additional persons into the scheme; (3) heavy emphasis on recruiting additional persons, with little or no emphasis on selling products to consumers.”
Beachbody certainly has none of the above components of a pyramid scheme. Anyone who refers to Beachbody as a pyramid scheme is talking out of ignorance combined with obvious negative past experiences with MLMs in general or, perhaps, an illegal pyramid scheme. In fact, I was duped into one such scheme because the Chief Economic Advisor of the Reagan administration, Art Laffer of the infamous “Laffer Curve”, was on the Board of Directors of this company. That company did have several of the components mentioned above.
In fact, Beachbody is squeaky clean on this one as: (1) Beachbody has no required inventory, period; (2) there is no direct payment for recruiting in Beachbody, period; (3) Beachbody is all about products to consumers. In fact, on the last point, Beachbody is currently paying $90 million this year for new customers that it passes on to Emeralds and above. I am not aware of any other MLM that does this.
Another interesting fact is that Beachbody was not created to be an MLM. It was already a very successful company before adding a network marketing component. I am not aware of any other MLM company that has ever had such history before becoming a MLM. Are you?
There is no question that adding a coaching program was in the best interest of Beachbody’s customers. If you were the executive of Beachbody would you have created a coaching program with all the overhead of adding a coaching division within the company (the salaries of the coaches, office space, additional phone lines, computers, etc) where the employees true incentive was to keep his job. Or would you opt for the brilliance of the network of independent coaches where:
1. There is no additional employees with additional salaries 2. The only way a coach can be successful is to be a product of the system 3. Being a product of the system he/she is a few steps ahead of the customers and any new coaches that he/she sponsors 4. There is a non-salaried advocate of the company to create new customer activity and to advise existing customers of different or additional products to improve their fitness goals 5. Because, in essence, coaches get paid to be fit through the system of sharing, existing coaches will help the whole system grow. As the coaching network grows Beachbody will have a tremendous impact for turning around the greatest epidemics in the history of the US - Type 2 Diabetes because of a grossly overweight society.
Our opportunity is unprecedented. There has never been a greater need for a fitness and health system that works. And I have never been exposed to a fitness and health company that works as well as Beachbody. Most people will not get involved because it is a network marketing (MLM) company and/or opportunity. I believe the reasons they will get involved will be one of these:
1. To personally improve their physical appearance 2. To look and feel healthier 3. They were convinced that Beachbody has superior products to achieve their weight and fitness goals 4. Because a medical advisor or doctor told them that they must loose weight (this will be big soon with the coming Type 2 Diabetes product) 5. That they needed a motivation or reason to be fit other than number 4 above (I was in this category) 6. They want to be part of society’s weight solution instead of part of the problem 7. They want an at home business that makes sense 8. They like the idea of getting paid to be fit
It is my opinion that after someone is involved and really understands this company’s vision, that they will stay in this program for most of the above reasons.
The company desperately needs additional active coaches to succeed in its mission. In my opinion, that is why they are having current recruiting contests and, most importantly, that is why they are going to get new coaches the same way they know how to get new customers - infomercials.”
Here's another article I found earlier:
Fact:Beachbody is the 69thfastest growing company in the United States according to an article in Entrepreneur Magazine, March 2008.
Fact:Beachbody was started by Carl Daikeler and Jon Cogdon with $500,000 borrowed from family and private investors and is now a $250 million company that spends $90 million on marketing annually.
Fiction:Becoming an Independent Beachbody Coach is a get rich quick scheme.
Fact:With a modest investment of time, it takes about four months to start making money and then only about $100 a week to start. When you invest more time, you make substantially more money.
Fiction:Beachbody coaches are part of a pyramid scheme - a non-sustainable business model that involves the exchange of money primarily for enrolling other people into the scheme, usually without any product or service being delivered.
Fact:Beachbody coaches market fitness and sell products from their own websites and are rewarded for encouraging people to become members of the Team Beachbody Club, get commissions on the fitness products that they sell and can build a business team where everyone is rewarded for their efforts to promote fitness, weight management and improved quality of life.Network Marketing is a business distribution model that allows a parent multi-level marketing company to market their products directly to consumers by means of relationship referral and direct selling.
Fiction:You have to spend a lot of money to be an Independent Team Beachbody Coach.
Fact:It costs $9.99 to become an Independent Team Beachbody Coach and then $14.95 a month if you decide to continue being a coach. There is no other cost for becoming a coach and the $14.95 monthly fee pays for your own coach website and e-commerce fitness product and supplement store.
Fiction:All that you have to do is sign up to be a coach and you will start making money.
Fact:Like any other business (each coach has their own coach business center) you have to work to make money. The more effort you put in, the more money that you will make. Beachbody helps you make money by providing a wealth of information and resources including live and recorded conference calls explaining the company and providing ideas on how to be successful, business building videos, product training sheets to familiarize you with all of the products, success stories, downloadable materials, access to everyone in the management of the company and most of all, your own personal coach to help you build your business.
Fact:The top coach in the company, a now retired school principal, in his first year (which is also the first year of the Beachbody network marketing business model)earned $305,938.00.
How much do you pay for your gym membership, and how much do you use it? Are you seeing the results you want? Do you have a nutritionist and personal trainer guiding you every step of the way?P90X costs about what two personal training sessions cost, $119.95. You will have to get your weights or bands, pull up bar and yoga mat. That works out to be about $40 a month, which is about an average gym membership. And you only need to buy it once. It isn’t a recurring cost every 90 days J
I used to really think that eating healthy was more expensive. First of all, preparing your own meals is going to be cheaper than going out and paying for the staff, the rent, the bills, the food, etc of the restaurant. I figured out how much my meal cost me the other day. These are all items bought at Fresh and Easy.
Frozen Tilapia: $6.00 for 4 filets (4 - 4 oz servings)
Frozen green peas: 0.99c for 12 oz (or about 4 servings)
Wild Rice: $3.00 for about 2 ½ cups of dry rice. (about 10 servings)
Lemon juice and Olive Oil cooking spray: I have these on hand and they last a long time, but we’ll say about .25c per serving just to make it count
So that works out to be lunch or dinner for about $2.50
When fruits and vegetables are in season buy what is on sale. Frozen is fine when out of season, or when watching the budget.
Oats and Eggs are not expensive, breakfast for less than a $1.00!
I find myself at the grocery store more often than I used to and I pay attention to sales and I use coupons. At Smiths I saved about $47 by buying what was on sale and using coupons.
This may also take some getting used to and take some practice. I bought about 10 boxes of Cherrios the other day when the HUGE family size box was $2.00 a box.
When ground turkey was on sale for $1.89 a pound I bought a few pounds and put them in the freezer.
Here is my turkey meatloaf cost, most of these ingredients I have on hand so a rough estimate:
Pound of turkey: $2-$3 (makes at least 4 servings for about $5 with all the other ingredients, so $1.25 for each serving)
Rolled Oats: .25c
2 egg whites: .25c
Tomato sauce: .50c
Onion Soup mix: .60c
Sweet Potatoes: $3 (for 4, I used two to mash)
Frozen Brocolli: .99c (4 servings per bag)
So each Turkey Meatloaf serving cost me about $2.25
How much are those $5 foot longs from Subway? Oh yeah, $5. I’ll take my turkey meatloaf or Tilapia, thanks.
People say this to me all the time when they find out that I am working out 6 days a week. I want to turn to them and say: “I don’t know how I couldn’t”.
It does take some planning and commitment. Before each week starts I look ahead and plan when I am going to work out. I figure out what time I need to wake up to fit in my work out, errands, emails, work, friends, etc. I don’t have kids and know that brings in some added time commitments. I have heard of a lot of people with kids whose kids try to follow along with mom and dad. What a great example they are setting for their children of how to live a healthy lifestyle. They have more energy to play with their kids later on. There are also some DVDs for the kids out there that keep them moving so if you can set up your kid with their own workout you can focus on yours.
Ask for support from your spouse, family or friends, or better yet, get them working out with you! Chris knows how important working out is to me, he can see it on my face when I finish a workout and am all sweaty and spent. Although he doesn’t work out with me yet he respects the time I need to complete it. (And I think he is really liking the results that he sees in the pictures, I have to give him something to make sure he comes back to Vegas!)
You have to make time for your workouts. You may need to give up something for 30, 60 or 90 days to get the results you want. I don’t watch nearly as much t.v. or surf the web all afternoon. My friends know that I am doing this intense workout so we don’t meet up after work for a drink or late night bite to eat, I catch up with them on the phone or grab a healthy lunch. I have made my health and fitness a top priority in my life and everyone around me knows it. “You only get one body, so you better take care of it, if it breaks down you won’t have anywhere else to live.” (Unknown)
If you only have 10 minutes a day you can still do something healthy for your body. Tony Horton has a “10 Minute Trainer” series to help get you going even if you have very little time. See, no excuses!
I have had to skip one Plyometrics workout in the 60 days and there was one other day I wasn’t feeling well and only made it ½ way through Plyometrics. I skipped the workout because my body was in a bit of pain and I was really tired. I listened to my body and rested. I had been pushing really hard since the beginning and thought I might be over doing it a bit. The next day I was ready to go and felt much better. I didn’t skip it because I was lazy, that is completely different. On days you just don’t feel like it I say: “Press Play!!” Do your workout, you will be surprised at how good you feel once you complete it.
I get so many benefits from working out besides just getting in shape. I have more energy on the days I work out. (I am a morning work out person, I like to work out shortly after I wake up and it sets the entire day off on the right foot for me. Working out is a HUGE stress reliever for me. There was a stressful time in my life when I was going to the boxing gym 5-6 days a week, sometimes 2 hours a day, taking some aggression out on the heavy bag was crucial to my mental health. When Chris first got here and I wasn’t working out I was tense and needed the endorphin release. The changes in my body have given me added confidence and I am wearing clothes that compliment my shape better, and I feel sexier. When I feel sexier, well, I’ll let you figure the rest out. J I have noticed that since I have been using this program my “wake up on the wrong side of the bed days” are few and far between. I have even noticed that my skin seems to be clearer (probably has a lot to do with the healthier eating choices I am making as well)
P90X is the next step after P90 (Power 90). It is a set of 12 different DVDs, a nutrition guide and calendar that gets you in incredible shape in 90 days. The main concept is muscle confusion. If you do the same thing day after day, week after week, your body will adjust and you will stop seeing changes. P90X gives you three different months so neither your mind or body get bored. It isn’t just cardio, or just weights, or just yoga. He mixes it up and really focuses on strength and flexibility.
Here is a basic week:
Day 1: Resistance and Abs training, focusing on 2-3 muscles. (Legs and Back, or Shoulders, Triceps & Chest, etc)
Day 2: Plyometrics (intense jump training that gets your heart rate up and improves performance in sports and agility)
Day 3: Resistance and Abs training
Day 4: Yoga (I hated Yoga and after seeing myself get better each week I look forward to it, I clear my mind and push my body.)
Day 5: Resistance and Abs
Day 6: Cardio
Day 7: Rest or Stretch (awesome stretch DVD)
You do this for 3 weeks straight and then get a “recovery” week. This give you time to focus on core, yoga, cardio and stretching and gives your muscles time to really repair and become stronger
Phase 2 is very similar to Phase 1 but you cycle in different workouts for resistance training. You still work all your muscle groups but different exercises, different orders, different combinations. Mind and body don’t get bored! Of course after three weeks you get your recovery week.
Phase 3 you get to do a week of month one, then a week of month 2, week of one, week of 2 then a final recovery week. I just started Phase 3 on Thursday August 27th.
There are options for people who don’t want as much focus on weights (the “lean” option) and the doubles option for cardio junkies like myself who want more cardio (add three-four days of a cardio a week for phase 2 and 3).
The workouts are between 60 min (core, cardio, stretch) 75 min (resistance + abs) and 90 min for yoga. You need a set of dumbbells (I use adjustable dumbbells) or a set of resistance bands, a yoga mat and a pull up bar.
