For most of my life, I enjoyed athletics. I played basketball, participated in marching band, and even led my sorority's step team in college. But by the time I approached my 40th birthday, my athletic lifestyle was years behind me. With two children and a busy career, I had found it impossible to stick to a consistent work out plan. My life was work, kids activities, eating whatever I could, whenever I could and no consistent athletic activity. My body suffered as a result. I was always tired, and I had that pesky mommy pooch that was going nowhere fast! Compared to many of my contemporaries I seemed to be ok, but I knew I could be much better.
In order to get my body moving again while spending time with my sons I took up tae kwon do, and loved it! So much so, I entered a tournament and did quite well. However, my lack of strength and endurance really hurt my sparring performance. When I got home that night I took a deep, honest look in the mirror and determined I was nowhere near as fit as I thought I was, or as I needed to be. At that moment, I decided to make a change.
For months, I had watched the P90X infomercials and thought, "this makes sense." However, for months I allowed my sister to convince me that the program looked too hard and I would give up on it, as I had given up on gym memberships and other fitness regimens in the past. But after coming to grips with my out-of-control waist size, and realizing my need to not only lose some weight, but ultimately, to get fit, I knew this was the program for me. I understood that only through cardio, weights and the concept of muscle confusion, could I get the definition I was looking for and the fitness level I craved. I haven't looked back since.
For me, the biggest challenge, I thought, would be the diet. I've had a sweet tooth since childhood, and with a busy schedule, and not the best cooking skills, I far too often I relied on fast food for myself and my family. But I became an avid user of Thin Kitchen clips. That along with the P90X diet guide and the on-line meal planner, helped me to truly learn how to plan and implement healthy meals that could be prepared quickly and taste great. Today, I find eating healthy to be quick, easy and delicious. And I'm proud to say, I don't miss a thing from my former life! Today, I look and feel much younger than my 40 years. I have the smallest waist I've had in nearly 20 years! And this year, for the first time, I'll be hitting the beach in a bikini instead of a one-piece suit! My endurance is up. My strength has increased. But perhaps most important, my new eating habits have transferred to my children, who are now eating healthier than they ever have. Most amazing...I'm only 60 days into the 90-day program! I can't wait to see the end result.
