We all have a moment in time where we have said that we wanted to change our lives. That time came for me as the new year was approaching and I was coming towards my 43rd Birthday.
I have always been in just OK shape. I was never much for cardio work because I have asthma and I have flat feet. In addition, for some reason when I have tried in the past I have never been able to build any real upper body strength in the gym or with other exercises.
20 + years behind the computer was really taking a toll on my body. The back and shoulders were always tense and full of stress. And, I started to develop nerve problem in my right shoulder that radiated numbness or pain down my right arm to my fingers. Then a few years ago, I suffered an tennis injury where I ripped my plantar tendon on my right foot/calf. This took me out of exercise for over 6 months and the injury never really healed properly. While I still play tennis weekly, I was always coming home limping after all the stress and pounding. I didn't want to be sidelined again.
The time had come for me to do something. I decided that I would start my transformation 90 days before my birthday, so that I would start my 43rd year of life with a new body and a healthier lifestyle.
When I started the program I really felt that Tony was onto something. I had used DVD exercise videos in the past, but they have two problems: one, you eventually keep up with the demonstrators that always seem to talk too much and two, you get bored. I figured that P90X with 12 DVDs should really keep me busy and engaged, right? Well they did and they do. And, I never have to worry about over pacing the crew on the videos. There is always something to shoot for and a great example of what to do right there on the screen. My cardio is up and my asthma is down. There is no stopping me now!
At first it was just the exercise and some of the diet plan, but once I started to eat 5-6 times a day and to take the supplements, I really started to see the results. I joined MDB about half way into the program for the support and the coaching and these both help me with my success. (Thanks Alphrita!) I know that I could have had even better results with more effort and if I followed the nutrition guide a bit better. However, I can honestly say that I am blown away with the new me!
I experienced three extra bonuses by using P90X and bringing it. First, my shoulder and nerve problem in my shoulder and arms has almost completely gone away. The strength and flexibility that I have built in my shoulders has cured 20+ years of computer goo build-up. Where I could barely do 3 crummy pull-ups, I can now to 7 good ones and a couple of bad. What a difference! Second, my calf and plantar tendon no longer bothers me, even after three hours of Tennis. Third and arguably most amazing is that for the first time in my life, I have developed an arch in my feet. Imagine that, an exercise program that helps with flat feet and fallen arches. Amazing!!!
The first time through I did the lean program. This time through I am going to go for the classic program. My goal is 180-185lbs and 14% body fat. I have no doubt that I will be there soon.
