While I've always enjoyed being active outdoors, I've never been able to stick to a schedule that enabled me to stay in shape and maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle. After 15 years of fighting obesity, tried different diets, counting points, an unsuccessful lab band surgery and second surgery to remove it, I came to the realization, the only way to address my issue, would involve a lifestyle change. I'd bought P90X, used it for 3-4 weeks, then got hurt and put it on the shelf. When I maxed out our home scale late last summer at 306 pounds, I decided it was time to take control of my health, before it took control of me.
I started working out regularly at the gym because I was in no condition to go through the P90X program and needed to rebuild my base cardio and core before I was ready for the program.
I started using a couch to 5K app on my iPhone, paying attention to my caloric intake as well as the types of calories I was consuming and started seeing some of the weight coming off. As the holiday season approached, I was determined this would be the first year I would lose weight instead of gaining weight during this time of year and I did it. As the new year approached, I'd dropped from an all time high of 306 to 289, of which 6 pounds came off during November and December. My neighbor suggested that I speak to his doctor because I was coping with severe heart burn and traditional medicine wasn't working. The doctor he suggested was an MD that switched to a holistic practice. After my first visit, and two weeks of following a strict diet of Meat Eggs, Vegetables, and Yogurt, (MEVY), I couldn't believe the heart burn was gone.
When I went back for a follow up, the doctor asked me if I would like to address my weight issue, and I my curiosity was peaked due to the level of success we'd just had with the reflux and heartburn. He introduced me to a specialized 6 week program that focused on a strict menu and caloric intake along with daily HCG injections. While this may seem drastic to some, its not nearly as drastic as being cut open to have a plastic restrictor put in place which is essentially what the Lap Band procedure did. I have to say, I was amazed by the results. After the first 3 weeks, I'd dropped close to 18 pounds and I wasn't hungry and my energy levels, thought clarity, and focus had improved significantly. Now I have to say, as week 4 went on, the strict diet was really starting to get to me, but I stayed on course due to the daily results I was seeing. At the end of the 8 week period (6 weeks of strict dieting followed by 2 weeks of low carb dieting as you reintroduce calories and carbs into your daily intake), I'd dropped just over 30 pounds!
I waited the 6 week maintain and sustain period as suggested by the doctor ans started a 2nd round. After a 2nd round, and similiar results, I am now within 20 pounds of my goal weight and down a total of 81 pounds since last fall. Now that that serious weight loss is over, I'm focusing on toning, adding lean mass, and increasing my cardio and core.
I'm in the gym 3 days a week, swimming two days a week, and jogging 2-3 times a week on average now. For the first time in nearly a decade, I like to get on the scale and I like to look in the mirror to see what changes are taking place each week. The part that really has me excited is starting back on P90X this coming week, which I expect to help me hit my goal weight and overall fitness levels.
