East Windsor, CT Hey there! I’m Jim. It was a vicious cycle of loosing weight, only over time to gain the weight back on. Originally it was the same 10-15 pounds. I was always into running and cycling to stay active, fit and help manage the weight. I was into running first and a number of years later a friend got me into cycling. I loved long distance endurance cycling. Living in New England, the cycling season Hey there! Living in New England, the cycling season would start in March and end in October. During that time the pounds I gained during the winter would come off and the fat would burn away. By later in the season, I could eat almost anything and not gain weight. The more I lost, the healthier I ate. I Felt great about myself and loved the way my body looked and felt during this time of year. Over the years the 10-15 pounds I gained each winter slowly became 20-25lbs, then 25-30lbs and as of year end 2008 35lbs. I hated the way I looked and felt. Worse was the guilt and despair over having gained back the weight. The more I gained, the more and unhealthier I ate.
The fall of 2008 I stopped cycling for the season in October and by December had already gained 35 lbs. A visit to the doctor revealed my blood pressure was way up. This was despite already being on medication. My doctor warned me that studies were showing that constantly gaining and loosing weight, were actually more unhealthy that being constantly over weight. He told me this type of gaining/loosing was associated with stroke because of the stretching effect it had on the arteries. Stroke was already a risk because of my high blood pressure. He told me I had to find a way to over time maintain my proper weight. This was a wake up call for me. Since I loved exercise, I figured if I could find a workout program I could do year round, it might go a long way to solving my problem. I belonged to a gym most of my adult life, but during the winter I hated doing the cardio machines and group classes were always a scheduling issue. I knew these weren't the answer for me.
Originally, I choose P90X because I was a fan of the infomercial. I had watched it dozens of time. The P90X website led me to Power90, which in my condition of December 2008 seemed the more realistic way to go. Through purchasing Power90, I discovered the Beachbody website. This year, I choose P90X because I enjoyed Tony's style and the quirky sense of humor he displays during his workouts. He makes it fun. Additionally, whether originally running or cycling, it was always about the extreme. I loved long distance endurance cycling and running the distances. From the infomercial that I had seen and what I had read on the message boards, it sounded like P90X was all about the extreme. From this standpoint I felt it would be a good fit for me. I figured the better the fit, the better the chances of sticking with long term. Finally, I heard Tony mention he was 52, which made us very close to being the same age. In terms of health & physical fitness, I wanted what Tony had!

From the start, I liked the variety that P90X provided. A different workout everyday. The workouts changed across 3 phases. This was a new experience for me and I found it kept me interested in the workouts. If you're running or cycling, you might change up the route or the distance, but you're still running or cycling. The workouts were hard without question, but Tony explained each movement and had one of his "kids" show me how to modify the moves. The P90X nutrition plan to me was simple and easy to understand. It provided several different options for each phase. The plan also changes across the Phases. This variety would prove to be the thing I liked most about P90X. The workouts, what I was eating, it was all changing up on a regular basis across the 90 days. Finally, I found Tony Horton to be one of the most inspirational people I have encountered. He challenged me in each workout to give it the best I had on that given day.
I started my first Beachbody program 0n January 2, 2009 (Power90). I joined a group of folks on one message board thread who were starting P90 on that same day. I stayed with the program, the message board thread and WOWY into 2010. I mixed in some cycling. I moved on to the P90 Master Series. I had amazing results. Mid-year 2010 I suffered a serious injury to my left hamstring. By the time the X-rays, MRIs, MD visits and 12 weeks of PT were done, I was benched for almost 6 months. I fell back into my old habits, and gained 35 lbs during this period. I was depressed and defeated. Coming back from this injury has been the hardest thing I have ever done. I overcame it by reconnecting with the message boards, starting to read some threads and dropping by WOWY to see who was working out. This slowly started to inspire me to get back to where I knew I could be. I started to want "it" again. I started working out. It was a slow and bumpy start, but most importantly it was a start!
I started back with Power 90 in February 2011. I completed 2 rounds of P90 by August. I was getting fit but I was seeing few results. I was embarrassed by where I had let myself get back to. By September 2011, I knew I needed a new challenge if I were going to achieve real results again. I decided on P90X. I saw a new thread on the message boards looking for "regular" people to start P90X on September 18, 2011. I joined the thread, started the workouts and the nutritional plan I shared my Day 1 photos and measurements with my new team. Results were slow to come, but as I completed each Phase the weight came off. I started to see definition. The workouts were the hardest I had ever done. I stuck with them. I made small advances in completing various moves in each of the P90X workouts week to week. This provided a great sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. I am most proud, that although I stumbled big time, I picked myself up, dusted myself off and didn't look back.
Starting my workout in WOWY and seeing any of my buddies who are working out at the same time, really helps me press play each day. The more buddies, the greater the chance and the larger number that might be in WOWY when I am. I try to find buddies who I usually notice working out when I am and who show through their profile picture, the kind of results I want.
Finally, the Challenge groups. My coach has one starting on 1/2/2012 using Facebook. I've joined and hope to see even more amazing results. The Beachbody challenge and others like it are great motivators. We all need some extra motivation now and then.
