It was my second home and family as I spent a few hours each day training and helping other students learn the arts. Eating healthy and exercising was what I knew and that lifestyle kept my body slim and lean. Being a shy person all through high school, Tae Kwon Do gave me the much needed confidence that I didn’t know I had. It’s also helped motivate the students whom I came in contact with to want to strive to do better.
When I went to college and juggling a 7-year relationship, the weight started creeping on the both of us. Over the course of 10 years or so, I had gained 58lbs. The added weight at the time didn’t bother me as I had someone who gained the weight along with me. We lead a very sedentary lifestyle, ate all the wrong foods in huge quantities, and didn’t even realize we were wasting our lives. After the relationship ended, I completely withdrew from everyone, only leading to more weight gain.
Now, as a graphic designer, I’m forced to sit behind a desk all day. It’s easy for me to get carried away with the projects at hand without a second thought of taking a break just to stretch my legs or to breathe some clean air. I remember certain clothes fitting more snug than usual and it shouldn’t have been too surprising to me with the way I was living.

One day, I saw the Turbo Jam infomercial and unlike all the other kickboxing DVDs I’ve seen, Chalene’s enthusiastic personality peaked my interest. I sat through the entire 30 minutes thinking that this could actually work for me. I’ve had a background in TaeKwonDo and loved taking dance classes at the gym. I felt it was a perfect marriage of both dance and martial arts. For 3 months, I dedicated myself to pressing play at least once a day for 6 days. Some weeks I pushed play twice. I was hooked from the very first time I pressed play. I couldn’t get enough of the choreography and cast. Depending on how much energy I had on a particular day, I would always pick someone in the group to emulate in energy. Turbo Jam reminded me so much of all the fun times I’ve had with my martial arts training. With a 1200 calorie balanced diet, I lost 30lbs within the first 3 months. I couldn’t have been more elated about the weight loss in such a short period of time then at that particular moment.
When Rockin’ Body came out, I knew I just had to try it out. Once again, I saw the infomercial and thought it was a great change of pace I needed. When the package came to my doorstep, I immediately read through the information and popped in the first DVD. I instantly fell in love with Shaun T’s infectious attitude for dance and couldn’t wrap my mind around the fact the choreography was easy to learn! For an additional 4 months, I lost 14lbs and this was when I realized I had hit my plateau. I kept pressing play even though I knew the progress was slow coming but I couldn’t get enough dancing!
I realized that if I wanted to break through my plateau, I needed something different. I visited the 10 Minute Trainer Forum and read numerous threads of people’s progress. I was intrigued and ended up getting it. I was diligent in eating right and following the schedule as it was laid out. For 6 weeks of doing 3 workouts a day, I slowly saw the scale move down 4 lbs and I lost an unbelievable 7” all around. I was pleasantly surprised and happy that my plateau was finally broken.
I knew that by my 3rd week of 10 Minute Trainer that I was ready to tackle an even bigger challenge, P90X! At this point in my journey, I knew I was mentally prepared to try such an extreme program. Day 1 came for me and I remember being so excited and exhausted at the same time, I couldn’t wait for the 90 days to arrive. My body had changed so much up to this point; I knew it could only get better from here. Days flew by so quickly as I was mentally and physically challenged. Prior to starting the program, I couldn’t even do a single pull-up. Now I can do 30! My strength has increased and my confidence has shot through the ceiling. I’m excited as to what the future holds for me with the X.
