Some know me as a musician -- a trumpet player to be specific, with the Smoky Mountain Brass Quintet (smbq.org). I received my Bachelor of Music degree in trumpet performance with a specialty in music synthesis from Western Carolina University. I earned my Master of Music in trumpet performance from the College- Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati. I've been a member of the Asheville Symphony Orchestra, and served as trumpet instructor for Mars Hill College and Western Carolina University.
Others know me as a businessman through my company Mountain Man Productions, Inc. MMP was created in 1999 as a real estate investment company, which over the past year has begun to add Internet Marketing sales to its revenue.
A few know me as the husband and primary caregiver of a wonderful woman, Debbie, who was stricken with early-onset Alzheimer's disease in 2005. www.DebbiesVoice.org
Now, I'd like to also become known as a fitness enthusiast. Why? Because of the positive change exercise and good nutrition have brought to my life.

I really didn't want to post my before picture. I was 50 years old, and needed change in all aspects of my life. I'm not sure why I chose P90X -- I don't subscribe to TV so I'd never seen the infomercial. I guess I'd heard others talk about the program, and after visiting the website thought it would be a good fit for me. Heck, what did I have to lose with the money-back guarantee, right?
So I pushed play every day, worked hard, and 90 days later, my results were pretty good. Not as dramatic as others I've seen, but not bad for a 50 year old guy. I dropped 20 pounds of fat, and got into the best shape of my life.
As others asked what I'd been doing, and me telling them P90X, the usual response was, "you're the first person I know that has finished that program!" If you're trying P90X or any of Beachbody's other great programs, and struggling with excuses that keep you from pushing play everyday -- maybe I can help you find your motivation. Let me know, OK?
AUGUST 12, 2011
I just completed round two of P90X, and dropped another 10 pounds of fat -- 225 lbs to 195 lbs. I'd like my body fat percentage to be below 10%, so I have a bit more work yet to do. I'll admit, I'm a little jealous of other transformations I see where the fat seems to melt off like candle wax, and muscles pop out like Jiffy Pop popcorn on a stove top.
Maybe it's because they are 20 years younger, or they use Creatine and other supplements which I don't. Or, maybe they "bring it" harder, which is hard to imagine since I push to failure on every exercise. Am I turning green with envy yet? Anyway, if you have any ideas about why I'm so slow, feel free to share with me.
During round one, I didn't use any supplements, and while I didn't eat horribly, there was definitely room for improvement.
For round two, I ate very cleanly, and supplemented with Shakeology, Recovery Drink, and Whey Protein. I was at a plateau of 205 lbs for what seemed like for ever, and it wasn't until I started adding more calories that I was able to lose another 10 pounds. Eating more to lose weight is a concept I still have difficulty grasping, and just goes to show that nutrition is at least 80% of the fitness equation.
