I always played sports growing up but never was into fitness or health. I didn’t watch my weight and wasn’t worried about what I was eating – but I was always very self conscious. Hated the way I looked and always wished there was something I could do or someone to help me.

The summer of 2007, I tore my right ACL and meniscus playing softball. Such excruciating pain! But I was devastated because that was the summer I planned on getting into shape so I could finally wear jeans (from 6th grade to till my sophomore year of high school I refused to wear jeans because I was so self conscious of my 5’6, 155lbs). For rehab I would go to the YMCA twice a day – I was doing as much as possible to get my strength back – I had tryouts for my traveling volleyball team which was 5 months away. It was hard work. This motivation allowed me to recover very quickly, even with a week set back from a horrible infection in my incision :(.

8 months later, I was healed up and playing on the team! But then horror stuck again. In the middle of the volleyball season, I tore my left ACL and meniscus!!!!! I became very depressed. I knew I had to go through another 6 to 8 months of rehab and healing. By this time, I was very into health and fitness and losing weight. I even had enough confidence to put on a pair of jeans. It might sound strange, but I had very low self esteem. I would think to myself, “I don’t deserve to wear jeans because I am fat. No one wants to see me in them.” I thought that for a very long time – even though I was young, I still hated the way I looked.

To recover from my left ACL, I worked out in the mornings and walked EVERYWHERE!!! Soon I began jogging. Never was a runner, but I tried it out anyway. I ran my first mile and thought that was an accomplishment! Soon, I was training for a half marathon! :) I ran my first half marathon in June of 2008! I finished in a little over 2 hours. I was just happy I finished!

My highest weight in high school was about 155lbs and my lowest was about 128lbs. I kept it around 133lbs but went to college and ended up weighing 145lbs. :/

I was sitting in my dorm room during the last week of my Freshman year of college and saw an info commercial for INSANITY. Ordered it instantly – I NEEDED to get back into shape. I went from weight around 147lbs to 140lbs.

Sophomore year of college, I ended weighing about 145lbs. I worked out almost everyday, and kept up with Insanity every now and then. My weight went up and down, up and down. At one point, I was at 139lbs but gained it all back.

So far this summer, I weigh between 143 – 145lbs at 5’6. But the funny thing is, I fit into the pants I wore when I was at 130lbs. I have gained so much muscle from Insanity. It has helped me feel strong and confident. I am not where I want to be right now – ultimately, I want to tone up and maybe lose another pant size. But this journey will be never ending for me. I will never put my health on hold ever again. College is stressful at times, but my health is my NUMBER ONE priority. What are you without your health?

Sometimes in life you go through situations that will hold you back for months (my ACLS tears) but you have to believe you can get through it. I found my inner strength and my passion for health and fitness through my traumatic experiences. I will never take for granted the legs God gave me and health He allows me to perverse. It’s up to you to want the best for yourself – I am here to support and motivate you to be your best because you deserve it!
