I am a 53 year old man married to a fabulous woman. We have three great children, ages 15, 13 and 10. We live in a town north of Boston, near the New Hampsha border. Here is my story:

I was in denial. I was down to two pairs of pants that still actually fit me, yet I would not buy any new ones. I refused to go up a size. I knew I was out of shape. That hike in the mountains last fall with the kids nearly killed me. I knew I had to start exercising again, yet I held onto my gym membership for three years without ever going. Excuses. Life was too hectic. There was no time to fit in a workout.
Then I got the bad news at my annual physical exam, right after returning from a family ski vacation. Overweight, high blood pressure, high glucose and cholesterol levels, and an above normal level on my PSA, a test that can indicate prostate cancer. I was a mess, I could not deny it.
My wife had hurt her knee and could not go skiing with us. In a strange twist of fate (no pun intended), she saw an infomercial for P90X. She was very enthusiastic about it. We are generally skeptical about such things, but when we checked out the beachbody.com website, we felt that this could be just the thing for us. We ordered the Slim in 6 (for her) and the P90 program (for me). When the DVDs arrived, I started to push play…

I would have never considered doing an exercise program on video before, but there I was in my living room, puffing and sweating away—and I loved it. This guy, Tony Horton, was funny, pushing me to do my best, yet reassuring and supportive when I could not finish or even do all the exercises. Working out at home first thing in the morning was just the thing; I could fit in a workout before going to work. P90 is an intelligently designed set of exercises that seemed to do the most in the least amount of time, challenging but not impossible. I missed workouts, I did not always eat the healthiest foods, but I kept pushing play. I started taking Activit vitamins. (How could I not? Tony was always asking me if I had taken my supplements.)
I had never before joined an on-line message board, yet there I was, posting embarrassing photos of myself in my underwear as a way to hold myself accountable. I didn’t know if anyone would respond to my first post. On the message boards, I found an amazing community of people dedicated to getting fit and healthy and helping others to do the same. I believe I was able to complete my first 90 days with Power 90 is large part because of the support I received there.
Now, not only do all my old pants fit me, I have gone down a pant size to 36. During P90, I lost a mere five pounds but a respectable five and a quarter inches off my waist and eight percent body fat. I had great news at my doctor’s appointment last week: My glucose levels were normal. My cholesterol dropped 32 points, from 246 to 214, my good cholesterol went up. And my PSA results were normal.
These first 90 days are just a beginning. I still have a ways to go. I have not reached my health and fitness goals, yet. My success, though not extraordinary, is solid. It is a foundation for my future successes.
Update 3/31/08 I had a foot injury and lost my P90 momentum. I stopped pushing play regularly, but I did not stop exercising. What I really wanted to do all along is do P90X and now I am ready to begin.
