I had been a relatively athletic person, having snow skied, biked, camped, rock-climbed, hiked and played soccer most of my life. You could say I had a good base of fitness.

I had been a relatively athletic person, having snow skied, biked, camped, rock-climbed, hiked and played soccer most of my life. You could say I had a good base of fitness.
A nearly 7 year period starting with the ending of my first marriage interrupted my path of good health and fitness. Some of the 7 years was tough, growing a company (failures and successes), the divorce, closest friends moving out of state, dot.com collapse, 9/11. And, some of the 7 years was good, my family was always close and helpful, my brother was always my best friend, I met my 2nd (and last) wife, we had 2 great kids, and moved to a great house in a great community.
In July of 2008, almost 2 years ago, my son was 3 1/2 and daughter was about 6 months old, I was really out of shape. I realized that I needed to do something so that I would be able to keep up with them when they were 18. I saw a P90X infomercial on TV and decided I could commit to better diet and exercise for 3 months as a test.
In 3 tough months, the test proved wildly successful. I improved my:
weight - from 250 to 215 pounds
flexibility - from 5 inches short of my toes to 7 inches past them with straight legs
balance - from 10 second to 1 minute+ in Tree pose; from 2 seconds to 45 seconds in dancer pose
strength - from max 15 to max 26 push-ups; from max 2 to max 4 pull-ups (still not happy here); from 16 inch vertical leap to 18 inch; from 56 second wall squat to 141 seconds; from max 25 bicep curls with a 30 lb weight to max 44; from completing 34 in & outs to 47
heart rate recovery time - 33% (from 6 minutes to 4 minutes between vigorous exercise and return to resting heart rate)
All the while I reduced my waist line (3 belt notches), fit into old jeans, improved the appearance of my chest, arms, shoulders, back, legs and butt (or so my wife says). And, here is the key, along with all the physical changes (which are fantastic all by themselves) my confidence has improved and I simply stand up taller. I will be able to keep up with the kids as they grow. Nothing could be more important to me.
So, what does this mean? I am a believer.
I have continued doing P90X for 2 years, mixing it up with soccer, running, hiking, biking and rock climbing - returning to the things that I have always loved. Every few months I complete a 3 month LEAN cycle or a 3 month CLASSIC cycle, but even as I mix in other activities, I still do 3-4 P90X routines every week. It is the habit that makes it work. And, I love it.
In addition, the fitness habit makes it easier to eat the right things. I don't count calories but I naturally eat more healthy because I don't want to counteract all the hard work. And I continue to supplement daily with the Recovery Drink, and the P90X Health Formula Vitamins and as needed with the Whey Protein Powder and The Peak Performance Bars.
P90X, or any of the other BeachBody workouts, when blended with the Beachbody nutritional supplements make for a powerful combination. It isn't easy, but it is really simple. If you are patient and disciplined, you will experience great results.
