I have always been passionate about physical activity and fitness pursuits. As a younger man I was involved in football and my real passion was rowing. I was a competitive rower for close to 10 years, out of which I was a member of the rowing national team for 7 of those 10 years. My biggest accomplishments were several national championship titles and rowing at the Rotsee Luzern Regatta in 1992
I have always been passionate about physical activity and fitness pursuits. As a younger man I was involved in football and my real passion was rowing. I was a competitive rower for close to 10 years, out of which I was a member of the rowing national team for 7 of those 10 years. My biggest accomplishments were several national championship titles and rowing at the Rotsee Luzern Regatta in 1992 in men’s lightweight 8 which at the time was the third most important regatta in the world besides the Olympic Games and The Rowing World Championships.
But as it is always the case with the majority of us guys, we traded our sport ambitions for a full time job, family and friends commitments and bought into old ideas of “that’s how things are”…
Before I knew it, I had ballooned from a lean and mean 160 pounds to a mind boggling 245 pounds by the summer of 2004. Some friends had asked me if I felt good about letting myself go like that. Others had never known me before and so they just knew the nearly obese, unfit, me.
For some unknown reason I had accepted that getting into my thirties was synonymous with being unhealthy and overweight. After all, I didn’t know anyone that age that wasn’t in the same situation as I was. But the wake up call came after my mom died of cancer and several other family members were struck by terminal illnesses and disease. Most of these were the direct result of poor lifestyle choices.
When I tell you that I’ve done nearly all, I am not exaggerating! In my pursuit to losing weight, I initially tried to avoid what I deep inside knew to be the way in the endless pursuit for a short cut, the magic pill approach, the easy way out. I tried:
Weight Watchers
South Beach Diet
Xenadrine
Hydroxycut
Silly gadgets like those that you see on TV that supposedly will give you a toned and sexy physique “with only 7 minutes a day!”
Those are just to name a few. Many more I’ve forgotten and many more are way too embarrassing to share on a public forum. Don’t worry, I never induced myself to vomit, if that’s what you are thinking!
After many years of trying diets and losing 10 pounds only to gain back 20, I discovered P90X while watching infomercials on a Sunday morning. Once again I felt that pit in my stomach when searching for an answer but facing the fear and uncertainty whether this product was really going to help me or if it was going to be just another fad, scam, etc. Without having anything to lose other than the blubber, I decided to give it a try. The few things that immediately struck me as being different and worthwhile about this product were:
It had a very detailed nutrition guide that helped me get personalized information about my needs. No cookie-cutter approaches
I could do all the workouts at home. I HATE GOING TO THE GYM!!!
The workouts covered pretty much all areas of fitness: strength, cardio and flexibility!
Now, I wish I could tell you that I’m one of those incredible transformation stories that you can find on the web, where people have truly transformed themselves in 90 days. Nope, I didn’t. I got stronger and fitter but I remained overweight after the first 90 days. Why? I hear you ask… simply because I failed to follow the plan as it is laid out. I worked out religiously, but I didn’t put the same emphasis on my nutrition. And as you may know, YOU CAN’T OUT TRAIN A BAD DIET!
Today, a year after first doing P90X I am under 200 pounds for the first time in all my adult life. At least since I’m 26. During this past year I had done P90X twice, Insanity and most recently Insanity Asylum, which has become one of my favorite workouts ever.
I am 39 and I can do things that I had never even attempted or could not do at all, like:
I can do 10 consecutive chin ups (this is when your hands face you)
I can do 6 consecutive pull ups ((this is when your hands face away from you)
I can do a moderately challenging yoga routine
I have a clear understanding of how my body reacts to certain foods and what foods nourish me and help me move my fitness forward and what foods are not so good for me (or you, or anybody for that matter)
Wow, that’s a lot of writing about myself. And basically, the point of this whole speech is to impress upon you that no matter your weight, age or fitness levels, you can DECIDE to start today to improve your overall health and wellness. COMMIT to following sound nutrition principles combined with an effective workout program that will help you enjoy your life to the fullest so that you can SUCCEED in accomplishing all that you want so deeply for yourself!
