Although I was never a “workout person”, I was physically fit and kept active through doing yardwork, playing tennis, basketball, snow skiing and sailing. Plus, running my own business kept my adrenaline at a high level. In my mid-50s, my wife, Della, and I began taking ballroom dance lessons several times a week to get more exercise and fun. We also found time to fly over 100,000 miles a year to many cities and countries for both work and pleasure. As I entered my 60s, the 9/11 terror attacks occurred and the resulting slowdown in the economy caused a lot of personal stress in our family-owned tradeshow design business. In order to relieve the stress and depression, I began to drink more wine in the evenings and not pay attention to eating a healthy diet or doing many outside activities. Two years ago I was diagnosed as hypothyroid and started to take medication, expecting that it would solve my lack of energy, which it did. However, I didn’t realize that my metabolism would slow down too, so I continued my same eating habits. Since our travelling schedule didn’t change either, trying to find time for workouts and clean eating continued to be a challenge…there’s nothing like a 12 hour time change to foul up your body clock.

It was my wife, Della, who told me that we were going to get off our collective bottoms and start working out after she saw and ordered P90 off a late night infomercial in May 2003. We both started the program in June 2003, signing up as Punki and Hunki, and did the program consistently with great results for two years until injuries, illnesses and surgeries started to take a toll on our workouts. We attended the 2005 Portland workout camp with Tony Horton and found him to be as genuine as he is in the P90 series. I like the basic workout and never tire of Tony’s chatter. I feel that it does a good job of working both the upper and lower body, developing stamina, and most importantly, getting me in shape for snow skiing and dancing. Although I also have the P90X, TurboJam, PHH and TMT programs, I find that I like to return to P90 for it’s basic approach. Even though I was still doing my workouts but not consistently…20 push-ups don’t make up for a 30-45 minute workout, I slowly gained weight and pant size. When I finally saw a photo of me taken during a cruise this last July and noticed that I had a significant weight gain that was evident in the photo, I decided that I had to finally get serious about getting back into shape, joined WOWY, and finally made significant changes in my diet, like eliminating the carbs in the evening and not snacking while watching tv. We have continued to travel for fun and business, and taking mini-cruises, so in the process of getting back into shape, I’ve been more diligent in following my diet, cutting down on extra carbs and doing workouts when I can. Eating on planes and ships can be a challenge, so often I’ll choose a salad, or eat before we get on the plane. Since we like to have wine with our evening meal, it is a big temptation to have more than one glass, or bottle, so I have been more diligent in just having water instead. I feel like I look ten years younger even though I don’t have quite the same amount of stamina. It’s nice to look in the mirror and not see my bit of pudge around my waist, and be able to bend over easily and not feel it in the way. My 34” waist pants fit comfortably and my dance T-shirts look great on my body. At the end of September, Della asked me to shave off my beard which I had worn since 1975 to see if I looked any younger since she thought that the gray made me look too old, and she said that I looked 15 years younger. My strength and endurance are much better now too, especially for snow skiing and dancing, which was also a strong motivation for me since they are both my main extra curricular activities now. We dance whenever we can find a band and a dance floor, and I ski in season whenever I can find any free time when I’m not dancing or travelling with her.
