Bayonne, NJ I am a 38 y/o single mother of an 18 y/o college bound, high school senior - who is now in the next stage of her fitness goals. I am officially training for my first figure competition to take place this very year. I anticipate to step on stage for a bikini division presentation early summer 2011 and a figure competition fall 2011.

I have always been relatively healthy with an hour-glass shape throughout my life. However, in the summer of 2005, I weighed 195 lbs., a size 16/18 with a body fat of 42.5%. Yikes!!! I thought what happened. I was in a miserable marriage and let myself go! Food became my comfort and portion size was the least of my cares. I ate whatever, whenever. I found myself avoiding mirrors when entering my bathroom. Hated to go clothes shopping and wanted so much to like my body again.
After my divorce, I decided I was going to do something to regain myself. I found the martial arts. It helped me to move and get out of my comfort zone. I liked learning something new and the confidence I felt knowing that I can protect myself and my daughter was empowering. Don't get me wrong I was already sazzy - I just lost sight of how strong I could be. The martial arts cleared my vision.
Shortly after that, I found a love for sweating that lead me to the local gym. Where I found if I forget about the scale and just forget about all the other people in the gym who looked better than me and to push myself day in and day out to just walk in through the gym and move - something was bound to change. And it did!!!!!! :-)
I found that if you challenge yourself by digging deep into what would make you push harder and creating that environment for yourself, it will bring you what you want! For instance, many times when I am on that treadmill - I envision myself as an FBI agent in a chase or repeat to myself with certainty 'you are fierce' 'you are a machine' - it changes your whole outlook and you feel elevated and stronger. It may sound silly - but it works to bring me out of that slump of possibly thinking 'uh - 40 minutes on this thing......'.
Well, with dedication and determination, by June '06, I weighed in at 130 lbs. went down to size 4/5 with a body fat of 15%. I became smaller than I was in high school!
In 2008, I was suffering some physical ailments that were causing me to feel tired and sluggish - overall not well!!! In 2010, I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's Disease - my body's antibodies obliterated my thyroid. Although I lost some muscle density, I did not gain all this weight doctors and online sources said I would. I stuck to a clean eating plan and that helped me alot. With aggressive treatment, I am happy to say the Hashimoto's does not affect me like it did once before.
As of 1/1/11, I am 127 lbs. and my measurements are 34, 27, 36.
I have in my arsenal P90X, Insanity, HipHop Abs, and Brazil Butt Lift programs; as well as, my weight training and cardio in the gym. Also, I have taken in salsa classes that is absolutely fabulouse for the entire body.
Please understand this is a way of life - make the decision to make the right decision each and every day. Don't be hard on yourself and keep moving forward. Put yourself in line for to be a priority - so many women, I hear, say my family comes first. Great....but what happens when you do not feel well? Family continues on. What happens if you were to set time out for yourself - the family continues on. They adapt. Find time for yourself.
I will encourage anyone who wants to train. I find it does wonders for the mind, body and soul. Exercise erases years of wear and tear from your skin and shape.
