I have struggled with my weight my entire life, and it became crystal-clear
when my mother became ill with lymphoma. She lost more than 30 pounds in
that time, and now that she is a much smaller, though thankfully healthier
woman, I hate that I feel so large beside her. I want to feel good about myself
and not avoid mirrors anymore.
I also suffered from emotional abuse and domestic violence all through
college. The culmination was that he told me I would never be loved, and I
actually believed him. I ate to gain weight and hid behind this huge body,
apparently using it as an excuse for why I was not loved. It took more than
five years to realize that...and to forgive him. I realized that in order for me
to love someone else, I first needed to love myself. And so, that is what I am
doing now: I am learning how to love and take care of myself.
