I am that average Joe. I was the athletic guy in High School (soccer, basketball, baseball). I remained active in college and the Military but then you have a family, a job and you just get complacent. I would still work out but I would there would always be something missing. For me the biggest problem is eating and having a good consistent run at it. For me it is smaller portions and eating every 2.5 - 3 hrs and the right foods. Water is another essential ingredient that I have always used but not enough. I'm starting my journey and I feel good and that is what counts, not the scale (even though the scale is telling too).
