I had always been the skinny kid growing up, eating and never gaining weight. I went on through High School playing football, Hockey and swimming pretty much on the go from the moment I woke up till bed. I tore my knee up as a junior and that introduced me to the sport of cycling which I latched onto and attempted to become a cat 3 racer by my senior year...then I went to College and had the typical bad college eating habits along with drinking beer I began smoking cigs etc. After college I went to work on Wall Street, long hours, bad cheap food, the after hours bars and more cigarettes. I continued to play football and Hockey on weekends and kept myself thin, but not healthy. Then 30-happened, I continued to eat, much better food, better wine but just as unhealthy and I began to gain weight at a moderate pace. I kicked Cigarettes for my 30th birthday and vowed to get back into shape, and then purchased all sorts of equipment, bowflex, eliptical trainer, and a host of other crap from TV. I was never able to stick to a program, long hours at work were always my excuse..My wife and I had our first child when we were 35 and I gained all the sympathy weight with her. She never ate red meat, and that is what she craved so steaks 4x a week were the norm...Soon I was above 200, then 210. Finally last year I was speaking at a Conference and saw myself on TV a few days later. I was shocked, that's what I have become i thought. Again we were at a friend surprise 39th b-day party and I saw all my friends and was surprised on how large we had become. None of us were ready to be on the Biggest Loser, just overweight middle aged men who just looked unhealthy. Then I had to go for a physical for health Insurance which was the wake up call. My cholesterol numbers were in the 230's, blood pressure was high and I was weighing in at 230 lbs at 6'2". I had been traveling alot over the past 2 years to great food towns like Houston, Dallas, New Orleans, Oklahoma City, Austin and Natchez
MS and the entertaining was taking a toll on me. The final wake up call was when a friend called to tell me that one of our other friends from college had a heart attack and died. He was 1 year younger than I was and had 2 children around the same age as mine, 6 & 2. I took stock of where I was and where I had been
in my life and vowed to be in better shape at 40 than I was when I was 30. I dusted off the P90X dvd's that I had purchased a few months prior but never got to on Jan 2 2009 and have never looked back. I completed round 1 at the end of March, while traveling, working and studying for the final level of the CFA
exam and realized they were all just crutches I had been using in the past. When I was finished I was down 35lbs, my cholestoral numbers where in the 170's and none of my suits fit..
I began another round of p90x after my test in June and was well on my way to getting to my goal of 185-190 lbs for my 40th in Nov. I tore my knee up once again in July jogging, but was able to maintain where I was by getting back on my bike. I had surgery to clean up the strayed Anterior Cruciate ligament and to remove 80% of the miniscus. At my 40th b-day in Nov i weighed in at 205, heavier but defenetly in better shape than I was when I was 30.
I continue to press play and I am in my 3 round of p90x after rehabing my knee finsihed in Nov. My goals are to finish a Century this summer and run in the local half marathon in September. Also to be in better shape @ 41, than I was @ 40
