Currently recovering from shoulder surgery and will not be able to work out till at least July/Aug 2012.
In January 2009 I turned 50 years old. Most people say I don’t look fifty, but I think they are just being kind. Some mornings, I sure feel fifty! The aches and pains in my joints, neck, and back that greet me most mornings seem to take longer and longer to fade with each day. In my younger days, I was always active and in good physical condition. It seemed that I could eat anything and never gain weight. As a United States Marine I prided myself on achieving perfect physical fitness test scores. I can even remember making an oath to myself that I would never become overweight. Well, in February of 2006 I went and got my Passport and when I saw the picture of me on it—I was in shock! When I saw my big, round, bloated face on my new Passport, I truly realized how out of shape I was and what an unhealthy life style I was living. I had ballooned to an unhealthy 230 lbs, was always tired, had no energy and was over weight—something that as a Marine I swore would never happen. I felt really discouraged. I knew I needed to make some changes.
Over the next two years, I changed my eating habits, started working out and worked up to being able to run 3 miles. I used to run 3 miles in under 16 minutes—it takes me that long to run 1 mile now, but at least I am back to doing what I know I should be doing. Living healthy!
What happened is really amazing! I lost over 50 lbs and 11 inches around my waist. I went from 235 lbs to 178 lbs. My energy level was up and I felt better than ever. And right about the time I was ready to amp up my workouts using P90X from Beachbody. Guess what, I injured my shoulder really badly and could not work out for over 6 months-even running hurt. Well, back came the weight—not as bad, but I was back up to 189 lbs and just not in good shape. Just look at my before picture…lol Now it is 2009, I am 50 years old, and my shoulder is healed. On April 13, 2009 I started my 1st 90 day round of P90X—can you say “Bring It!” I am motivated and ready to take my fitness to the next level—and stay there. My new mantra is, “Lets Stay Fit.” I will update this in 30 days!
Wow--I could not wait 30 days to update. It is only day 19 and I am already seeing awesome results. I have dropped from 189 lbs to 179 lbs and lost an inch around my waist. Not to mention that I feel great and have a ton of energy.
Just a side note--I am maintaining a strict diet Monday -- Friday with a little cheating on Sat and Sun. I think the diet has a lot do do with my success.
**30 Day progress update**: I am down to 176 lbs and my waist is down to 34. I can see my weight getting down below 170, but for right now I I could not be happier with my results.
6/21/2009 I decided today that I am going to restart P90X from day one using the Lean Program. I am currently on week 8 in the Classic Program and have stopped losing inches from around my waist. About two weeks ago I changed my diet to 2200 calories and started to gain weight. I know it is mostly muscle weight, but I have some stubborn fat around my mid section that I want to burn off before I focus on building muscle. I am happy with the inches that I have already lost(36 to 34 and holding fast at 34)...,but I feel I can do better if I focus on losing all the fat first. I feel strong and my cardio is awesome--so I don't feel like this is a setback,,I am just refocusing.
UPDATED: In February 2010 I tore my left shoulder in 3 places doing Jiu Jitsu and have not worked out sence then. I am back to 190 lbs and out of shape. I am now 52 and I am starting with P90 which is easier on the shoulders than P90X. I plan to get back in good enough condition to do P90X again.
