Transformation story

Growing up in the 80's and 90's, my little brother was always the one that was in shape, had the muscles and could beat me at arm wrestling. I saw my parents going to the gym all the time, so I was interested in staying healthy & "fit".
Fast forward to the 2000's when I got married and decided I wanted to workout more, but didn't know where to start. So I'd come home and turn on Fit TV and do three programs in a row - including one that used the good ol' Step. I remember calling my mom one day crying because I realized my coordination wasn't what I thought it was. I kept it up, though, and got better at it while noticing slight changes in my body and how I felt.
They kept playing this commercial for Gilad's workout DVD's and one day it clicked. "Why don't I get those & try to transform my own body?" So I got them, and enjoyed them, but knew I still needed something that really spoke to me...something more up my alley.
Then one day my husband says, "I don't think I want to be married anymore." Not knowing how to communicate & talk this thru (a totally different emotional transformation story), I took my vacation early and went to stay with my parents for a week.
So in October 2005, I saw an infomercial for a workout video called Turbo Jam with this cute, pretty lady that kept raving about how you'll enjoy your workout more if the music is really great, and Turbo Jam had that music. It was bright, colorful and more "girly". So I ordered it.
I went back home where I got the set of videos, and I played the Learn & Burn DVD on my lunchbreak & just sat & watched.
I don't remember beginning the program, but I remember one day thinking, "These kicks are SO HARD! My face is beet red & THIS is REALLY a workout!!" But I loved it. Looked forward to it everyday.
That year, because of my impending divorce, I decided it was time to learn how to snowboard. I told my husband, "I want to learn." He said, "No." But I didn't give up. I had him go buy my a snowboard, boots & bindings. I made plans with some friends to go around Thanksgiving. I got there to Copper Mountain, CO and couldn't believe how big those mountains were. I didn't get on the lift or ride at all till my husband called & said he wanted to come, and his new roommate, who used to teach snowboarding, wanted to come too.
So they got there, and we headed towards the lift. Now, I don't like heights. Didn't know how I was gonna get thru going up this big mountain, but I did it. Eyes shut most of the time I think.
So my friend teaches me the basics of going down the hill, and I was on my heel edge a LOT. Holy quads, Batman. And biceps, and triceps, and abs, and glutes, and neck, etc, etc. The next day I wanted to die because I was so ridiculously sore.
Well, I got thru that soreness, and signed myself up for the Burton Women's Learn to Ride 3-Day Camp at Copper. I did that in December, and THANKS TO DOING TURBO JAM and getting to where I wasn't falling all the time, I wasn't half as sore!! All those squats & lunges were magic for my legs, and in the end for my self-esteem.
My ex-husband and I stayed close friends, and it felt SO GOOD to show him how strong I was getting, good I felt, even though he rocked my world with this terrible thing called divorce.
I'd cry when Chalene would say, "Cuz we're your family! We're your Turbo Jam team!!" I connected so well with Chalene.
March 2010, 4 1/2 years after the divorce, I saw the Insanity commercial and thought, "I could do that!" Plus, I was too impatient to wait to Chalene Johnson's new program which was yet to be announced. ;) I ordered Insanity thru QVC, got my Results & Recovery Drink thru Amazon (cuz I didn't know about Team Beachbody yet), and got thru a week of the program. CRAZIEST THING I'D EVER TRIED!
That week, I found out my little brother killed himself. Severe depression. He loved life but didn't get the help he needed in time.
So with all the things now I was feeling and going thru, stress relief & keeping my mind on something else for at least an hour was what I needed.
So my folks & I started Insanity again.
We got thru the first month, then needed to take a break to work on the grieving process & figure things out as well as get re-motivated.
In July 2010, I got to meet Chalene Johnson at an event and thank her for a Facebook post she'd put up a few days after my brother died about depression and where to go for help. She's attracted such great people to her, and thru these wonderful people, I found out about Team Beachbody.
Everything has really come full circle. I've gotten to experience TurboFire and P90X and Asylum - programs I would never had the strength or stamina to do without my baby: Turbo Jam.
I've never had to deal with weight issues, but the strength and confidence I've developed with these programs, the people I've had the pleasure of meeting thru these programs has truly changed my life, let alone my body.
I feel that if my little brother were still here now, we could have the best arm wrestling match EVER. And I'd probably even win. He'd be so proud.
