I'm a 49-year-old teacher in Rhode Island. I've always been lean -- OK, skinny, or "skinny-fat" a lot of that time, but I could always lose the flab without much effort. 13 years ago, when I quit smoking (1-1/2 packs a day for 20 years), I started running again for the first time since my teens, and I started weight training for the first time in my life. Within two years I had made enough I'm a 49-year-old teacher in Rhode Island. I've always been lean -- OK, skinny, or "skinny-fat" a lot of that time, but I could always lose the flab without much effort. 13 years ago, when I quit smoking (1-1/2 packs a day for 20 years), I started running again for the first time since my teens, and I started weight training for the first time in my life. Within two years I had made enough progress that I was no longer embarrassed to bare my arms in public. The last two years, though, despite regular gym sessions -- well, semi-regular -- I've been finding it harder and harder to take the fat off and keep it off (probably because my aging knees and hips just won't let me run 5+ miles a day anymore). Even though I'm regularly told (by my doctor, massage therapists, trainer friends) that I'm in terrific health "for a guy your age," it drives me nuts that when I was 45 I was in the best shape I'd ever been in, and now, just a few short years later, I'm ... well, "a guy your age." If I can stick with P90X, I'm hoping I can look and feel better at 50 than I did at 45 -- or 30!
