I lived there until I went to Abilene (Texas, of course) for my sophomore, junior, and senior years of high school. It was “The Fabulous Fifties”, the onset of Rock ‘n Roll, Elvis Presley, sock hops, and “the good old days”.....and the year after high school, I met my husband of almost 52 years! We actually had a blind date arranged by a high school friend who was dating one of his friends. We double dated on a Sunday afternoon and went to the gravel pit....for some target practice! We had such a good time, but he had just been discharged from active duty with the Navy and was obviously confused, because he didn’t call me again for a l-o-o-o-o-ng time. In fact, it was the same friends who got us together again for a “coffee-can” cookout dinner at her house. Well, we were an “item” after that. He went to Texas Tech to finish his schooling in EE. I followed in the fall, we were engaged in October, and married in Abilene in January of 1957. I worked full time for a television station in Lubbock for two years until he graduated and we moved to the Dallas area, to a suburb called Garland. We had two children, a boy and, two years later, a girl. When our daughter entered first grade, I decided it was my turn to get an education and was fortunate to receive both music and academic scholarships to a local private junior college. I attended there for two years and then had to transfer to the University of North Texas to complete my Bachelors and Masters degrees in music. (I had been Valedictorian of my high school class, and graduated Magna cum laude for my Bachelors.) Those were difficult years with two active children at home, commuting to Denton on the bus, and doing all of my school work. My husband took up a lot of slack but there were a lot of “all nighters” to finish written work and projects! It was worth while, however, because both of our children were and at times, still are, active in music and many other things. I was fortunate to begin my private voice teaching before I finished my degrees, and maintained a private voice studio at home, as well as teaching privately in many local high schools and a couple of junior colleges, for about 36 years! In fact, my last student had her Senior Recital just this past June! During my teaching years, I was also privileged to participate in special study and performance opportunities in Florence, Italy; Graz, Austria, Santa Fe, New Mexico, as well as Master Classes in the Dallas Metro area. My story wouldn’t be complete without telling you about the four high years of our lives! My husband was an engineer at E-Systems (now Raytheon) and we had the somewhat unique opportunity to move to Alice Springs, Australia! We jumped at the chance! Both of our children were grown and out on their own, but I can’t say it was easy to leave them. Still, it was only for a limited time and so we moved “Down Under”. WOW! It was culture shock...but we adjusted very well in a relatively short time. I became active in the theatre group, and had many opportunities to sing, direct, and conduct. In fact, I conducted a large community chorus in numerous performances, including “The Messiah” with orchestra, chorus, and soloists, and the “St. John’s Passion” with chorus, organ and trumpet. I directed an extremely successful “Broadway Review” for the theatre group and helped direct or performed in several other theatre-sponsored musicals and productions. “The Alice”, you have to realize, was a town of about 24,000 people at least 1,000 miles from the next largest town. On Saturdays we would walk from our flat on the Todd river bank (dry river, of course), eat “brekkie” at one of several little cafes at the outside mall, go in every store, buy some groceries, visit with various and sundry friends (we would always meet someone we knew), and walk home...all in two and a half to three hours. Sometimes we would rent a 4-wheel drive vehicle from the base (until we bought our own “bush-basher”) and go to Yulara (Ayers Rock) for the weekend, visiting at King’s Canyon, the meteor craters, or other out-back sights on the way. We saw brumbies (wild horses), feral camels, dingoes, eagles, and, of course, lots of ‘roos and emus. While living there we visited virtually all of Australia, New Zealand, a large part of China and Thailand, Bali, Singapore, and (several times) Hawaii as we were coming or going. We were also privileged to travel a great deal in Europe and the U.S.A. on our rotations. It was truly a blessed time in our lives, although I have to say that our entire lives have been bountifully blessed and continue to be so! And we have continued to travel whenever possible Now, read my Transformation Story and see what Beachbody has done to multiply those blessings! . My Progress My fitness goal: Transformation story

Let me tell you what an absolutely amazing difference Beachbody has made in my life! (You can skip to the end for the bottom line.) I’ve always been pretty active....a cheerleader in high school, preferred ping pong to Atari’s Pong, etc. As an older student at the University of North Texas, I took ballet, tap....and then, lo and behold, aerobic dance became the new age rage. Yep.....I was the mother of two children, went back to get my degrees in music....and learned the aerobic chacha! Upon finishing my degrees (Bachelor and Master in music), I joined an all-female spa and went routinely 3 times a week to high impact aerobics, then contouring classes, then weight machines. I would teach private voice at a local high school until 1:30 or 2:00 PM, head to the spa for my workout, then either head home to teach until 9:00 PM, or head to a local junior college to teach. It was a full time job, but I was putting two kids through college! And I was able to control my weight, which had been a problem since my freshman year in high school. My workouts also enabled me to have the stamina and energy to maintain that schedule! This was long before the days of Beachbody, but I was certainly aware of the importance of consistent exercise. During our years in Australia (see My Personal Bio) I had a walking/running regimen, and also went to the YMCA for weight workouts, but I began to use an Aussie format video in our flat and discovered that was a great way to work out, especially in the unbearably hot summers (which are during our winter. Think 115 degrees F at Christmas!) I could cool that flat down to a comfortable temp and just go to town! I also watched some quite good Aussie exercise programs on our “tellie”. In other words, I bought some hand weights and used our stairs and chairs and whatever else I needed....and still managed to work out. Well, we moved back to the Dallas area and I went back to the spa (I had put my membership on hold). Things were going great, except that the spas were no longer new, they were not being maintained, and they finally went out of business. I sort of let things go for a while, but then we bought a treadmill and a ski machine and I began using those. However, my legs are pretty short, so the ski machine began to affect my knees, so I gave it up. I had done some fairly hefty running before we went to Alice, injured my Achilles tendon, and was therefore hesitant to do much running again. Besides, by this time I was quite a bit older and I had to convince myself that just maybe I should be more careful and back off the pace a bit. Then......TA DA!!!! Enter a Beachbody infomercial! I just happened to see one and thought, “Wow. That really looks like a good workout that’s FUN!” So I ordered. When it arrived, my first thoughts were.....”Oh my goodness! I don’t know if I can ever do this. And do I really want to work this hard?” I even considered sending it back because it looked so difficult. (This was before I even tried it!) But then I did try it. I thought, “ Oh well, I may be old, but I’m not dead! I’ll just see what I can do!” That was the Power 90 Boot Camp with Tony Horton....and I began adding it to my regimen of different videos and dvds. At first, I could do only ONE pushup....now I do 15 reps of each, or 24 of the wide/tri/reg. (8 each). For the past month, I have done only P90Boot Camp instead of any other videos or dvds....and have even started on the “Sweat 3/4". I have lost three pounds, gotten my body fat percentage down to 33 instead of 38, lost a total of 8 inches (not bad for about 6 weeks, considering my age)....and people are asking me if I’ve lost a LOT of weight. Best of all, I really believe that P90 is the best program I’ve ever done! It works every muscle and just seems to melt “muffin tops” away. I have found that if I don’t keep up with it, I get stiff from sitting, my joints tend to ache, and I don’t have the energy I want. I always use Chalene’s weighted gloves when I do punches and to add weight when I do the sculpt sessions. I also use them when I walk, either outside or on the treadmill. I still use the treadmill (orders of a PT) because I developed bursitis in one hip from gardening in the summer....during a time when I was letting my P90 fall by the wayside. I’m convinced that I would not have developed it if I had been faithful to the P90 program and maintained my strength and flexibility! I have just ordered the great Showcase Pack and look forward to trying other Beachbody programs. I already have the TurboJam and it’s great fun. I’m really excited to try the Slim in Six, the Yoga Booty Ballet, the Hip Hop ABS, and, especially the P90X. I never dreamed that the workout with Tony could be such fun as it was in the Dallas area. I want to be able to do all the moves he led.....and, you know what?.,.....I’m sure I will! Because I’m still a work in progress....and making progress as I work! If it works for me, I know it’ll work for you. Give it a try! | Please sign in to flag this as inappropriate.
