When I was a kid and teenager I ate what I wanted, played sports and was skinny; really, too skinny. Being skinny was never any fun growing up; people don’t realize a skinny kid can feel just as bad and get teased just as much as an over weight kid. Not until College, when I {NASM Certified Personal Trainer} I have always been in what I call “average guy shape” most of my adult life. When I was a kid and teenager I ate what I wanted, played sports and was skinny; really, too skinny. Being skinny was never any fun growing up; people don’t realize a skinny kid can feel just as bad and get teased just as much as an over weight kid. Not until College, when I finally began to fill out, did I begin to like what I saw in the mirror. I worked out when I could in college, in between class and beer parties! But then I began to get the “skinny guy beer gut”! Well, as I got older I began to notice that I was putting on a lot of fat and losing the little muscle tone I had. I have to admit, It didn't bother me much, because my thought was "at least I'm not skinny anymore!" I really think I was in denial about not being in good shape anymore until one day my dad made a comment when I took my shirt off while playing tennis; "what happened to you? look at that gut!". Well, I began to workout again; running, lifting weights in 3 to 6 months stretches; but never really had a plan/program or a goal in mind. It was one of those “figure it out as you go workouts”; it just did not work! My wife(at the time) began doing Power90 in 2003 and I initially thought "dvd workouts were dumb and not very challenging, especially for a guy!" Boy was I wrong! I tried it one day with her and it really kicked my butt! We completed the 90 day program of Power90 in 2006. We had been doing power 90 off and on for that year, until one day while on vacation in Florida in January of 2007 we saw the infomericial for P90x and we both were immediately excited to order it and get going on what looked like an extremely challenging workout . While waiting for the dvd’s to show up I started to check out the Team Beachbody web site. This was what I had been missing in my workouts! I was so excited to see a web site totally devoted to tracking my progress and diet, and the fact that I HAD to login in everyday when I worked out gave me the accountability I had been lacking in my previous programs. It also didn’t hurt that you could win cash and prizes just for logining in. My goals with the P90x program are to gain strength and flexibility, and also maintain a healthy diet. I have always had a flexibility problem and have been told that tight hamstrings just "run in my family". Well, while previewing one of the videos Tony said something that has stuck with me, he said, "flexibility is a choice, anyone can be more flexible, you just have o work at it". When I started P90x, I could not touch my toes while bending over, heck, I could barely get my shins, but I stuck with it, and now I can touch the floor. I have more room for improvement, but I have come a long way since the first days of the program. These workout programs and the MDB club can change your life, they did mine. And PLEASE, if I have been assigned to you as your coach feel free to contact me, I am here to help. If you need help picking the right program, questions about supplements, what equipment works best,etc... please ask. If I don't know the answer, I will help you find it. I actually started my transformation over 4 years ago, when my wife(at the time) finally got me to try her Power 90 workout with her. We had went on vacation that year in Florida for our anniversary and had a picture taken while we were out celebrating( see my before picture), I could not believe how big I looked, I was shocked! That started my road to getting fit. We completed Power 90 and P90x(5 times and counting!). It is so hard to put into words what this program can do for you, and how great you really can feel. I have never felt more satisfied in an accomplishment in my life. I went the entire first 90 days without drinking one beer or pop. Making it through March Madness, sitting and watching hour after hour of college basketball, and not having a beer with my buddies was very tough; but it was something I wanted to accomplish. I never dreamed I could go that long, but I know that is a huge reason why I lost so much “gut fat”. When I use to exercise I hated working out in the morning; never could get it to stick; it was always just easier to hit the snooze button. For these workouts I get up every week day at 6am and complete the workout , before my son Alex wakes up. By having to just “press play” and do what Tony tells me to do, it makes that 1 hour workout the most productive it could ever be. I no longer waste time deciding what I am going to do next, Tony tells me what to do, like it or not! On the second round of P90x I mixed it up a little bit. I decided to go to Chicago in October 2007 for the Urbananthlon; it was a 12 mile race that combined running, climbing and jumping over obstacles. It was an awesome experience. I ended up bring 4 other P90x'ers with to share in our unique race experience. We all plan on going back next year and doing it again! UPDATE: September 2008- Although I have had great strides in the last 120 days physically, it has really been the "mental transformation" that I am most proud of and want to share. It has been a tough and interesting 2008. Along with working in the real estate market, and we all know how bad that has become,In June 2008 my divorce from my wife became final. It is simple, divorce sucks. This was one of the toughest things I have been through in quite some time. My workout became less and less frequent and I ended up going on some "medication" to help me deal with the situation. 3 to 4 weeks into being "medicated" I found that I was someone who medication acutally makes worse, not better. Long story short, I quit taking them all together and decided to turn all my negative feelings into positive energy and really recommit myself to my Beachbody workouts. Funny thing started to happen when I did this, my mood changed, I felt better, life started to be fun again. I didn't need pills to make me feel better; just exercise and the support I recieved on the Beachbody message boards. I know medication does work for some people and helps them tremendously, I am certainly not advocating that everyone needs to throw out their pills if they are indeed helping them. But for me anyway, working out and sticking to a plan helped get me through it all, where now I can see things are going to be just fine; life is good again and I can't help but think my new outlook has a lot to do with these programs on Beachbody. I wanted to share some of my personal story on the web site, because I know there are people out there right now in my exact same situation, the divorce rate is 50% afterall. Just know that, even at it's darkest hour, there is always hope, you just have to "keep pushing play" and believe in yourself and the FACT that life will indeed get better. I am also currently pursuing my NASM personal Training certification, which I never would have dreamed of before I became associated with Beachbody and their fantastic products! Update December 9th 2008: I am now an NASM certified personal trainer! I am so proud of myself, it is hard to put into words. When you look at how this year started(divorce, feeling crappy about everything) and how it is ending(feel great, look great, and have a new career), I AM SIMPLY BLOWN AWAY. I never would have gotten to where I am today if it was not for Beachbody and Tony Horton. This company is a life saver for me, it can be for you too. For anyone who is reading this and is thinking "I can't"; just start saying "I can try" that is all you can ask of yourself. Start with one day, turn that into one week, into one month, and pretty soon life is gonna start feeling and looking better. And please, contact and use your Beachbody coaches, we are here to help. EVERYONE needs help at some point in their life and it is ok to ask for it. This truly can be your start to a healthy lifestyle, you just gotta believe. I do. The MDB club and its workouts have helped provide a total transformation for me. I think those of us who complete these programs all probably feel the same way; we just want to meet our trainer in person someday, wether it is Tony or whomever, and just tell them thank you and express our extreme gratitude for making it all possible. The funniest thing to me is that, when I started out, I had planned on doing this for 90 days. I believe, for me, Power90X and Beachbody have went from a 90 day program to a life time program.
