While in the military, I was always in great shape and participated in running teams, organized sports and basically getting paid to be in shape. I have always achieved high scores on the physical fitness tests and coach other members of my units in physical training. I attended and was certified as a fitness instructor for any of the units that I was attached to.

While serving in the US Military, I was injured and received a TBI (traumatic brain injury) and a spinal compression. From there, I was in physical therapy for 18 months until my medical discharge. Upon leaving military service, I went back to school and became an Aerospace Engineer.

I have suffered from migraines and back pain since. In dealing with the pain, I was taking upwards to 2400mg-3200mg of Motrin and developed stomach problems. I went back to my Dr. and was assessed I was amazed to see the two prescription that he gave me. I looked at him like he was crazy after he handed me the prescriptions. The first on was for the usual dose of Motrin and the second one was for Tagamet to take care of the damage that the first drug was causing. I never filled these prescriptions and faced the reality with what looked like the beginning of a life of back pain and migraines. Taking me back to the 18 months of PT, I quickly remember some biofeedback routines. This eased my pain but I can control it enough to get through a tough day.

Upon returning back to civilian life, I admit that it was a bit scary. I didn’t know how to carry myself in a corporate setting. I knew that the leadership I have learned could get me through it however, that was a different type of leadership styles in the military from the corporate world. So with this change, I became alone in a large corporation. I began to see the results of my military transformation back into civilian life as negative. I was out of shape and gained a bunch of weight. With a bad injury and stress, I thought that this was hopeless. As usual, I was up at night and had been watching the P90X infomercial for about a month. I finally ordered and that changed my life. My first round back in 2008 and I lost 30lbs and began running triathlons. I ran 8 sprint triathlons that summer. With that many training days and events, by fall I had been running and swimming 2-3 times a week. I finally was able to get back into winter sports and that’s when I tore my ACL. The recovery from the surgery took most of the year and I had gain a lot of weight and fell back into some of the bad eating habits. But that is behind me now and now I’m back into doing P90X on a regular basis with the goal to complete some triathlons over this summer. The ultimate goal is to get to Kona and participate in the Ironman. This is my goal and I know I have a strategy and plan to achieve this goal. I’m the type that leads by example so if I have the honor of being your coach, I can show you how to transform yourself into whom you want to be because I have been there and have adapted and overcome some of the same challenges. I can motivate, inspire and advise.
