Imagine a 44 year old happily married church pastor, with four kids (three of whom are teenagers), out of shape and out of control! I ate what I wanted, when I wanted, and used a two-year-old knee surgery as an excuse not to work out. I had yo-yo dieted for a decade, and I was in the worst shape of my life.
I wanted to do better, to be better. I was embarrassed and did not know where to turn. While late night channel flipping, I came across a 45 year old, health evangelist named Tony Horton preaching the gospel of P90X.
When the box arrived, I had excuse after excuse to put it off. Fact was, my body wasn’t going to change until I did. So quietly, I made a commitment to get started. I did not tell anyone that I was pushing play. I just started “bringing it”, and my life and my body have never been the same.
My routine has changed. Actually, I now have a routine. I’m working out every day and loving it! I am eating for fuel and nourishment rather than gratification. I am sleeping better than I ever have and feel much younger. I have a new sense of strength physically, mentally, and emotionally. Most importantly, as a pastor, people who look to me for guidance tell me they are inspired by the changes they see in my life. I have discovered a new confidence that I have not had before. I have never been into sports. This Spring, however, I joined a softball league. What a blast! The agility and stamina that I have gained on this program is amazing. Within the first few games, many of my team mates started dropping like flies with injuries. One doctor even told our shortstop that these were typical problems of the weekend warrior. Meanwhile, I am running around the bases and chasing balls in the outfield like I’m trying out for the majors!
My family is amazed, and that makes me feel so proud. My oldest son is a high school athlete. He now challenges me to push up contests while my ten year old sits on my back! He’s been using my stretch and yoga routines to gain flexibility and agility, and he’s now in the starting lineup in football this year. My wife loves being able to put her arms around me again. That would have never happened four months ago. She’s now doing the program with me.
I am not only looking more fit, the doctor’s numbers don’t lie. My blood pressure has dropped from 146 /117 to 112/78. That’s HUGE! I have lost more than 35 pounds and 7 inches in my waist. Now, I want more activity, more stretch, more yoga, more ab work. Who is this man in my mirror? I am getting to know him more and more every day, and I like him! This is for real. This is for life!
Update: May 2009 I have been recuping from a shoulder injury. (at least that was the excuse I've been using.) For the last 6 weeks, I have been re-inventing myself. I have lost almost 40 pounds, 6 inches from my waist, and I am KEYING on my abs this time. I am also working on endurance training for possibly competing in a race or two. (Sshhhh, this part is a secret.) I feel great, and the compliments are coming. I am also working on the business side of Team Beach Body as a coach and trainer. I have several guys and gals working out with me on a regular basis. This is a BLAST. Stay tuned for new photos.
January 2010 It has been a very busy couple of months... Christmas Programs, Mission Trips, a stress fracture in my foot from running, back problems from "uberlifting". Again, no excuses. I put about 20 pounds back on (thanks to my genetics, huh?!?!) Now, back to the gym. My 18 year old son is doing P90X with me, too. This is lot of fun! It is also pushing me. This is my 4th time thru the P90X program. I am sooo hooked. However, doing this with my son and tracking my workouts (I love the pdf sheets), I am already lifting more than where I finished last time thru! Not much weight loss in the first two weeks, but inches are disappearing. Stay tuned!
