I have always been active all my life. I've been dancing since age three, growing up in the studio doing ballet, jazz, tap. I played soccer, water polo, and in high school I was in band and a varsity cheerleader. It was only in college when I started getting into hip hop scene when I joined Kaba Modern my freshmen year and continued on with my dancing career doing various industrial projects and paid performances. I later joined Mavyn Entertainment Company until I graduated and I moved back home to San Diego. In high school, I never watched what I ate and living in southern San Diego, I practically lived off Mexican Food such as carne asada fries and California Burritos everyday. I was a junk food fanatic and I would always be munching on chips and candy in the ASB lounge or go across the street for some boba or starbucks (I always ordered a venti strawberries and cream frap with java chip and extra whip cream). Well these bad eating habits followed me into college and suddenly I noticed that my metabolism wasn't as fast as it used to be. I think the college partying and drinking, staying up late, the stress from studying for midterms and finals, and just eating on a poor college student's budget = fast food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner (we had In-N-Out and a 24 Hr. Del Taco & Lee's Sandwhiches across the street) finally got the better of me and I found myself wearing baggy sweats and big t-shirts not because I was too lazy to do laundry but because I couldn't fit into the clothes I use to fit into. Where I use to wear tanks tops and shorts shorts, I started wearing hooded sweaters and extra large basketball shorts. I danced and performed all through out college and whenever a big show would come up I'd go on my (water, syrup, & lemon diet for a week) and basically starve myself up until the show just to look "decent" then I'd gain all the weight back tenfold as soon as I finished my performance. I was pretty good at hiding my weight but when I went from a size 0 to a size 12 in jeans - that's when I knew I hit rock bottom. It wasn't until I pledged my sorority Tau Theta Pi my last year of college that I realized I didn't want to look or feel this way anymore. It was only after a lengthy demanding physical and mental pledge process along with the support of my sisters that gave me the initial push to take control of my life and become healthy. I started going to 24 Hr. Fitness - beginning with just running on the treadmill and taking a few group exercise classes here and there. At the time I was teaching at a dance studio across UCI and was referred by another teacher to give some "lady" who was "big in the fitness industry" dance lessons in basic break dancing and locking. Well one thing led to another and the next thing I know I'm performing at an event called "Turbo Camp" for the opening performance and fashion show. It kind of reminded me of cheer camp back in high school but the excitement and energy that was in that room full of people did not compare to anything I've ever seen before. Of course, you all know now that this lady is no other than Chalene Johnson, the creator of Turbo Jam, Chalean Extreme, and soon to be Turbo Fire. After Turbo Camp, she asked me to be in her hip hop hustle videos and suddenly I was introduced into the whole "fitness scene." Now after Turbo Camp I decided to see what all the hype was about so I took my first "Turbo Kick" class at my local 24 Hr. Fitness in San Diego. I instantly fell in love with the program - it had a lot of intricate moves/layers and I liked that it worked my whole body from my shoulders & back to my legs & core. I definitely got a good sweat on the first time and the music and intensity just got me pumped. Since then I was hooked - I got certified February 2009 and now teach TKB and Hip Hop Hustle 5x a week at 4 different gyms. I started my transformation last December so it's almost been a year since I started working out. I've lost about 40 lbs. teaching Turbo Kick alone but I realized that if I really wanted to slim down and get those flat abs I've always wanted I'd have to do strength training and eat RIGHT! Nutrition & weight training is definitely key when you feel like you've hit a plateau. I'm currently doing Tony Horton's P90X home workout program along with taking the P90X recovery formula, eating the P90X bars, and taking Shakeology as one of my meal replacements. A lot of my friends, coworkers, and students in my class have definitely noticed a difference! I've learned that you can't just teach or take cardio classes every day because yes you may be burning calories but if you do too much, you end up burning your muscle too. With P90X I get the whole body core conditioning and resistance training to compliment all the cardio I do so that I can build muscle w/o getting bulky and burn more fat. The P90X recovery formula helps me get through all my classes and home workout sessions by giving me energy, replenishing nutrients, and reducing soreness so that I can give my students a great workout :) the Shakeology is probably the best meal replacement shake I've ever had. I've tried all different kinds of supplements & meal replacements, but I'd end up eating or snacking afterwards because I'd never feel satisfied and end up taking in more calories than I'd plan to in the first place. With Shakeology, not only does it provide me with all the fruits, vegetables, vitamins, & protein I need a day, it keeps me feeling full & satisfied without the cravings. I use Beachbody products because I believe in what they have to offer. I can see the results and the changes in my body. I know that anyone who uses these products correctly by following the detailed nutrition guide and workout plan, that they will definitely see a positive change in their body unlike ever before. I thought I could never lose the weight after college but now I'm even in better shape than I was in high school. I hope that my story can be living proof that if I can take control of my life (and my appetite) you can too!
