I have always had a pretty lean build and I think I took that for granted. When I was younger I was athletic and had a runner's build. I would never have been mistaken for muscular but I didn't mind how I looked, tall and lanky. Five years ago when my wife got pregnant with our first child I guess I decided to gain all the weight instead of her. I gained around forty pounds in the nine months of pregnancy. I was very skinny before so really this just filled me out. However it wasn't the good kind of bulking up. I weighed 185 but it wasn't muscle. Just prior to this I had been pretty active taking aikido classes. We moved further away from that school though so I stopped the classes. That was really the last time I worked out. I never paid attention to what I was eating as for most of my life up to that point my metabolism was such that it took care of everything.

Kids give a new meaning to the word "busy" so even though I entertained ideas to get back in shape I was never able to find the time to do it. Our second son was born a little over a year ago. Right around that time I went in for a physical and received some pretty startling news. My blood pressure was higher than it should be for someone my age and my cholesterol was pretty bad. My doctor recommended that I lose around ten pounds and try to get more exercise in. I think I was really in denial about it all since I'd never had those types of problems before. I mean I looked in the mirror and thought I looked ok, maybe a little puffy compared to how I used to be, but still fine. However only after seeing myself in pictures did I realize what had happened. I was totally out of shape and at the top of a slippery slope downward.

A couple of months ago a buddy of mine started talking about a workout program that he was thinking about trying. When I heard p90x I immediately recalled the infomercials filled with people who looked like they could have been stand ins for the movie 300. He did the initial fitness test and decided to start with p90. After listening to him talk about how it was a great workout I decided to man up and order the DVDs. My wife was also interested so its been great to motivate each other. She says I've become obsessed with it but we agree that there are lot worse things to become obsessed with.

As soon as I completed the power 90 I moved onto p90x. I'm currently halfway through my second round and I see no reason to stop completing rounds. I'm in this for life!
