I weighed as much as 325 pounds about 7-8 years ago. I started a diet/exercise program of the Atkins and stationary bike riding which allowed me to get down to 230 pounds. Then, I ditched the Atkins diet and added weight lifting to get down below 200 pounds. About 4 years ago one of my co-workers completed the Detroit marathon which really impressed me. So I took up running. I completed my first marathon in April 2006 in Fargo, ND and finished two more marathons, two 50Ks, and a 50-miler. Starting in 2008, I quit exercising and a healthy diet was non-existent. My weight went back up to 240 pounds.
In December 2008 I decided to get back into shape and started my former regimen of diet and exercise. While I did get results in the first few months, I found myself getting bored with the same old routine of weight lifting and running/cardio. I saw the P90X infomercial one day and decided this program would provide me the variety and challenge to keep me focused. So I got on P90X at the end of February 2009 and am currently starting week 6. This program has increased my strength and flexibility immensely.
But more important is the diet. During the first three weeks of the program, I maintained my own diet of high protein and low carbs. I was reading through some of Tony Horton's blogs and read a phenomenal "rant" regarding diet and what needs to be done. I was shocked at how many violations I had; diet pop, no water, high sugar, no veggies, no fruit, red meat, etc, etc, etc. I made a decision to stick to the P90X diet plan starting with week 4, and this is the biggest difference I have seen. No soda, no red meat, water, green tea, a variety of veggies and fruits, 5 meals a day. I have constant energy all day, I don't overeat due to hunger, and I never feel sluggish during workouts.
I'm not a big fan of getting on the scale, but I've gone down two pant sizes so far and have seen my push-up and pull-up quantities increase weekly. My immediate goal is to finish P90X. After that....not sure. P90X+ intrigues me, but so does running another marathon. Whatever I choose, I will always feel reassured to know that I have a proven program to utilize to maintain my strength, my flexibility, and my overall fitness
