My Photos | crosshead Phoenix, AZ Around March or April of 2007, I was filled with this strange notion that I should enlist in the U.S. Navy. Oddly enough, the idea came to mind after the woman, who I thought I was in love with at the time, told me she had enlisted and suggested I follow her lead. Oddly enough, the idea came to mind after the woman, who I thought I was in love with at the time, told me she had enlisted and suggested I follow her lead. So logically (or, illogically rather)I thought joining in the Navy for a girl would be a good idea. After all, we’d be in the same boot camp and there may the be the opportunity for us to be stationed in the same area, right? (FAT CHANCE, STUPIDITY…I know) I proceeded to meet with a recruiter and after my intial physical (height, weight, etc.) I was told that I would need to lose around 20 pounds before I could even be considered. At this time I weighed 250 lbs. and I was 17… I had thought about losing weight before and had cut some things from my diet such as soda and…well…that’s about it. The recruiter gave me a list of foods I couldn’t eat which pretty much left fruits and vegetables, and told me that if I followed this regimen, I could lose the weight in about 2 weeks. Oh, and I would also need to incorporate some physical activity, to which he suggested running. Well, being 17 and “in love” I decided this step would be necessary to continue to pursue the “woman of my dreams”. Although it was ill-advised, I restricted my diet to fruit, vegetables, and chicken for about 2 weeks and began to run every night and eventually worked my way up to 1 mile. In 3 weeks I had lost the weight and subsequently in that 3 weeks I decided against enlisting in the Military and told the woman I “loved” how I felt, who proceeeded to tell me she did not share the same feelings… CRUSHED, is an understatement. However, a change had already began to take place that (little did I know) would not stop. I realized that I had lost 20 pounds and how accomplished I felt, not to mention how much bigger my clothes seemed on me. I continued with this trend of running but, incorporated more foods into my diet and in September if 2007 I moved in with my [disabled] mother (to care for her) and joined LA Fitness. I began to work out daily at the gym, doing more cardio then I ever imagined and, again ill-advised, focused little on weights, I was mainly conscerned with getting rid of my ponch. From what I had read/heard this meant heavy on the cardio and ab exercises and little on the weights. I then discovered there was no such thing as “spot reduction” and that I needed to focus on building other muscles in my body, which I also learned would burn just as many (if not more) calories as if I spent 30 minutes on the elliptical, if I put my best foot forward. And for a few months I was stuck in a perpetual cycle of doing the same thing day after day at the gym and not really understanding why I wasn’t attaining the same results as those guys on the covers of those Men’s Fitness magazines. That’s when I discovered P90X!!! Even after I began the program, it took a lot of time and effort, not only into the work outs and diets but, doing research to see what works for me with regards to my diet, building muscle, and daily routine of exercise. As stated in my transformation story, physical fitness has a learning curve to it. But, if you’re willing to learn, put in the time and effort, there is no limit to where you can go! I never thought I would see anything close to abs or that I would ever be in the shape I am now, much less love working out!!! I hope this story has inspired you and that you will allow me to help you attain the goals that you’ve set for yourself and maybe need a little extra motivation or push to get there. I started P90X back in January of 2008 after seeing the infamous P90X infomercial that promised a fitness revolution like my body had never before experienced and in only 90 days to get me into the best shape of my life. I was skeptical to say the least but, then as I began to listen to the personal testimonies of those who had completed the program, the idea started to grow on me. However, I still wasn't sold on the program or the idea of purchasing it. I thought, "I could never do those work outs. I can barely make it 30 minutes on the elliptical as it is. Pull ups and push ups? I have enough trouble with standing-up after sitting for too long. THERE'S NO WAY." So, I was content to turn the TV off and continue with my routine that was getting me no where near the fitness level and physique goals I wanted to one day achieve. It wasn't until my mother came into my room one day and suggested I try it. I explained to her I had seen the infomercial but, that it just wasn't practical... I have to thank my mom, because she, unlike me, wasn't content to let me continue to stay where I was. Not going anywhere! I finally decided to give it a try. I ordered the program, the bands, and the pull-up bar so I would have no excuses to not do the work outs. Day 1: Chest & Back kicked my BUTT (to say the least)! 15 push ups max, and I was using bands for pull ups, (mainly switching between that little red band and the green one). I had a long road ahead of me but, I was confident that if I stuck with this program it would deliver. AND IT DID! At the end of the first 90 days, I had lost about 15-20 pounds, very much body fat and I was able to see the inner workings of my abs for the first time in my life! Push ups? No problem, I was doing them in my sleep! I was ecstatic...but not content. Admittedly it took until the middle of my second round before I upgraded to dumbbells and started using the pull up bar, and for the most important part of my work out to get into check, my diet. It's been a long arduous road but, the transformation that's taken place (physically, mentally, emotionally) has been absolutely worth it. I would encourage you, wheather you've recently started, or are in your 15th round of this program (or any program), KEEP PUSHING PLAY! DON'T STOP! You can't lose if you never give up!!! I would love to chat with you and discuss your fitness goals with you and ultimately, help you achieve them. Keep in mind, there's no one that knows everything about this entire diet and fitness world. It's a process whereby you must keep learning and keep working your hardest to grow everyday and if you need any encouragement, reach out to those who are also passionate about physical health and people such as myself who want help people (such as yourself) attain the kind of physical peak they never thought they could. I’m happy to report I’m now on day 256 (11/18/08) of P90X and am preparing to embark on P90X+!!! So dust off those dumbells, get out your old tennis shoes, it’s time to get to work!
