I'm Debi, wife and mom of two little monsters. I'm a personal trainer, as well as a group fitness instructor, teaching cardio and weight classes, including Turbo Kick. I'm a member of the Dallas Derby Devils, the BEST roller derby league in the world.
My story begins just after the birth of my second child. I was at my heaviest weight ever, and completely miserable. As a stay-at-home mom, I didn't have a life outside of my husband and kids. As much as I adore my family, I felt completely alone at times. I became insecure because I was so uncomfortable in my own skin.
After stepping on the scale one morning and feeling horrified. I had just turned 30, was completely miserable, and absolutely tired of feeling that way, so I decided it was time to take control of my life again.
I started focusing first on my food intake. I started tracking my calories. I was slowly losing some weight, but I wanted to see better results. That's when I decided *gasp* to add in some exercise.
Now, ask anyone who has known me for a long time and they will tell you, I have NEVER been one to do any kind of physical activities by choice. I was never athletic, and I didn't do (or even care) about sports. My time was spent lounging around, watching TV or reading a book. I didn't ever do more than I had to do physically.
I added in a 30 min exercise twice a week. After the first 2 weeks and seeing a little better weight loss, I started doing 30 min 4 times a week. The results were better. I was down a good amount of weight, but still had a little ways to go. I kept up this steady pace, and things were looking good. And out of nowhere I realized I loved working out. I started to look forward to my workouts, because the feeling I would get afterward, knowing that I pushed myself and I didn't give up, made me realize for the first time, how strong I really was.
There came a time when I became bored with my workout dvds at home. It happens sometimes, the workouts become a little boring if you don't have enough variety. Being a one income family, a gym membership wasn't really in our budget. So I did the next best thing...
I got a job working in the childcare of a local gym. This was perfect for me. I could bring the kids to work with me, make a little extra money, and get free access to the gym and all the classes they offered. Perfect!!
I started taking the classes when I could, and before long I realized that instructing was what I wanted to do. I saw it was a job that could work with my kids, and would still enable me to be a full time mom. I would be doing something I loved, something for ME. For the first time in a long time, I was thinking of myself.
So, I went for it. I became certified as an instructor through AFAA. A few months later, I became certified as a personal trainer, and just recently, became certified as a Turbo Kick instructor.
I teach several classes a week, both cardio and weights. I feel so much better than I ever have before. I'm finally comfortable in my own skin.
I've gained a level of self confidence I never had before. Now when I realize I want something, rather than just dream about it, I work for it. And the results have been wonderful.
Oh, and remember how I said I didn't do, or even care, about sports? Well, I recently got into Roller Derby. I discovered it last year and was really into it, didn't miss a game all season. I decided I wanted to try it. I found out that tryouts were coming up, so I got myself some skates, even though I hadn't skated since I was a kid.
I practiced for a couple of weeks, then as nervous as can be, I tried out. And now, I'm a member of the Dallas Derby Devils! I skate for the Death Row Rumblers, and I absolutely love my team. I still have a way to go with my skating skills, but I'm working on it as much as I can, and I'm looking forward to learning as much as I can.
It just goes to show... All it takes to get what you want out of life is to make the choice, then work for it. Things won't come to you if you don't put in an effort. You have to want it, and you have to be willing to work for it. If it's important enough to you, you CAN get it.
I'm proof. If I can do it, anyone can, and I want to be there to help you if you need it.

After the birth of my daughter, I was at my heaviest weight and I was miserable. I woke up one day and decided to stop being unhappy about it, and change it. I started tracking my calories, and the weight started coming off, slowly. I then added in exercise, and was able to lose 30 pounds. I still have a little way to go to get to my goal, but I am 100% happier, and I have gained something more important to me: confidence in myself.
