I was vacationing with friends on the lake in 2004 and we were taking pictures throughout the day of all of us water skiing, swimming, and just hanging out on the boat. A friend's wife pointed out a picture of me sitting on the deck of the boat while drying off from swimming and commented how 'age is catching up with all of us' referring to my 'pooch' belly. We all had a chuckle but inside I was embarrassed and didn't like what I saw. My 34" jeans were about to be retired for a larger size. What happened to me? I was also taking anti-depressants to cope with post-traumatic stress disorder resulting from my involvement in Operation Desert Storm. I wanted off the drugs and I wanted to feel and look better physically. I decided right then I had to do something or I was headed straight into an abyss I might not return from. I had a great family (wife and two awesome boys, 3 and 4 at the time), a great career, and blessed in many ways and yet, I literally wanted to die.
Upon returning home I decided to get back into a martial arts program, something I had practiced off and on since I was 16 years old. I knew it would give me a good cardio workout and should help shed a few pounds and inches. Four years later I achieved my 3rd Dan black belt and was fitting comfortably in 32" Levi's but I seemed to be stuck. I worked out 5-6 days a week but I rationalized that since I worked out so hard, I could eat anything I wanted. It was the equivalent of having a humidifier and a dehumidifier in the same room.
My wife suggested we explore this new program she saw on TV, P90X. My first reaction was zero interest in throwing money away on a program by some Hollywood-muscle-head screaming at me in the comfort of my own home. At her urging, I checked it out and it seemed different. It combined a simple workout (not to be confused with easy!) with a sensible eating plan, not a diet!
I finished round 1 of P90X and couldn't believe my eyes. I just get up everyday and press 'play'. I had a 3-day business trip and a week long beach vacation during Round 1. I was able to stay on track since I didn't need a bunch of special equipment - I just threw the resistance bands in my luggage. I used to take a little yellow pill to help me manage my depression. The only little yellow pills I take now are the P90X Peak Health Formula vitamins. I'm in better shape physically and mentally than when I returned home from Desert Storm sixteen years ago. I feel like I've turned the biological clock back 5 years for every 30 days of P90X. I just finished Phase 1 of Round 2 and I feel better than I did when I was 27.
I'm livin' the dream, baby, livin' the dream. Because everyday I "do my best and forget the rest" in everything I do.
I had a routine physical scheduled that coincided with the last day of Round 1. A week later I received the results from the blood test. It was simply amazing. Before I started P90X my total cholesterol was 229, after Day 90 it is down to 175! HDLs (good cholesterol) before - 68, now 69. Check this out: LDLs (BAD cholesterol) before - 134, now 96! Triglycerides before 91, now 51. I could see the difference on the outside and now I can see the difference on the inside.
Thanks, Team Beachbody!
