I graduated from college in 1997 with a BS in Geophysics. My wife and I got married that summer and moved to California. We lived in California for about 7 1/2 years before we decided to look for a change in pace in scenery, so we moved to Florida in February 2005, and we’ve been here since.
I am a registered professional geologist in the State of Florida and work with a small environmental consulting and engineering firm. My commuter “vehicle” is usually a 2003 Raleigh Talus mountain bike. It’s more fun than driving, less stressful than sitting in traffic, it lets me get a little more exerciser in, and, because of traffic and where I live, it’s faster than driving at times, too.
I usually don’t have too much trouble just doing the exercises and “pushing play.” What I don’t like is that my current schedule has me getting up at 4:30 am so I have some time to wake up before I work out before for work. I’m thinking about trying to adjust my schedule so that I can get my workout in after work, but I’m not sure how well that will go because of my bicycle commuting.
Another thing I have difficulty with: Eating habits. Admittedly, I don’t have a lot of willpower to control what I put in my mouth for food, but I am getting better. The eating plan for P90X kind of worries me because I’m not sure how I am going to pull through on that.

When I started this journey a few years ago I weighed about 227 pounds with an estimated 29% body fat. My comfy shorts were a size 40. Compare that to high school where I ran cross country, weighed about 170 pounds, and wore size 28 pants. I stopped running that summer between high school and college, but stayed active through college with Tae Kwon Do, but even that ended after college. I never changed my diet. I was used to eating anything and everything I wanted... And it caught up to me.
My first foray with Beachbody brought me into Power 90 with Tony Horton. I stuck with it for 90 days. 120 days. 150 days. And I kept with it. The only problem was that I never paid too close attention to my diet. I still lost a good amount amount of weight and probably got myself down to a size 36 waist.
Then my wife and I moved from California to Florida, and in the fun and excitement of changing jobs and changing coasts, my exercises went to the wayside and I worked my back up to about 220 pounds. That went on for a while and I realized that I had to change something again. So back I went back to Power 90. I stuck with it and watched my diet this time. We mixed in Slim in 6 and Turbo Jam for changes in pace, but I always came back to Power 90. It seemed to work best for me.
Then I decided to kick it up a notch. I started riding my bike to work (19 miles round trip) and started Power 90 Master Series. I lost more weight and am now hovering in the 195-pound range. Unfortunately, I've let my diet slide and I'm running stagnant again. The next phase? P90X. I’ll need to follow the diet plan. I have the dvds, now I just have to build a pull-up station suitable to our space.
More to come...
