I used to be very active throughout my childhood and youth, participating in soccer, badminton, mixed martial arts, football and wrestling. When I was 15 years old, I needed to gain weight to be able to play in my football league. Using only free weights in my basement, a Joe Weider book from the 70's as my trainer, 3 hours of daily cardio 4 times a week via football practice/games and a very strict diet, I gained 22lbs of muscle in 2 months. By 5 months I had a six pack for the first and only time in my life. I looked & felt like the top dog.
Unfortunately, as more serious school obligations set in, I couldn't keep it up. Part-time jobs of a sedentary nature created more physical downtime. Getting into a long term relationship also added to a declining diet, as going out to lavish dinners and treats contributed to gaining weight.
I have been watching the P90x ads on late night tv intently for over a year. I knew from when I first saw it that this was something that definitely seemed to deliver what it promised; the footage of the no-nonsense struggles of the P90x crew showed me that. I wanted to try it ever since it came out, but procrastination and my own laziness stopped me. Even after purchasing the program, I allowed it to simply sit in my basement for 6 months without even bothering to watch the 'How to Bring It' dvd. In the meantime, I developed lower back problems where sleeping for more than 6 hours would leave my back aching in the morning, no matter what mattress or what position I slept on. My diet was horrendous, packed with carbs and creamy sauces and sugary foods, eating when I was bored or procrastinating on writing an essay. Binge drinking with the guys became a regular pastime.
Now at 23 and having graduated from university & finally finished school, I feel like I need to focus on my health more than I did or could have before. It's time for health to become a priority and I'm ready to do that once more.
