Rather than make a traditional Bio I think I will just share a few thoughts on the similarities between my work in the musical field and my "workouts".

I play guitar. I have for 28 years. I was always interested in learning to improve and had a strong work ethic. I was able to achieve my goals through hard work. One day I decided to really reach beyond what I had previously thought would be possible for me. I began to study my father's music.

If you don't know my father is Frank Zappa. Unfortunately for all of us he passed away far too soon. I've always felt a strong connection to his music and I wanted to explore that. In doing so it became important to me share his music with younger generations who would never have the opportunity to see or hear his music performed respectfully live in concert.

His music is very complex, it's filled with sophisticated rhythms and expansive harmonic content. It's diverse and extremely challenging to perform on many levels.

In 2004 I decided to create a project called Zappa Plays Zappa with the goal of forming an incredibly skillful band so we could perform as much of this amazing music as possible. For me to accomplish what I set out to do, first I needed to completely transform my abilities as a guitarist. I literally had to change my entire approach mentally and physically. That is tough to do when you have nearly 30 years of instinctive habits that you have formed. I cocooned myself away for 2 years working on the necessary changes. Most days I was playing between 7 and 10 hours a day and studying many fundamental things about music, things I had no previous experience with.

Amazingly, after that 2 year period I was able to put the band together and we began touring the world in 2006. I was able to achieve my aforementioned goals. We even won a Grammy for our efforts in 2009. I mention all of this because it relates to my journey to improve my own personal fitness.

In my life I have had periods of time where I was very active with athletics and fitness related things. I've always had an interest in eating well and have never been extremely overweight.

About 10 years ago my lifestyle became more sedentary. I was doing a lot of work in recording studios and I was sitting in front of a computer screen for hours and hours editing and mixing music. I got married, started a family and my lifestyle changed even more. With all of the demands on my time I relinquished any previous commitments to personal fitness. I spent a decade eating whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted. I didn't do an ounce of exercise and I was always tired. Not just because we have 2 kids under 5.

This past September I turned 40. I used that as my wake up call. I was having a hard time keeping up with the energy of my young daughters. I was huffing and puffing just carrying them up the front steps to our front door.

I knew something had to be done. With my previous experience with fitness I knew that I needed to get back into a routine. I knew that once I got into it I would want to keep going. I needed to take the same approach I took with relearning guitar. A mental and physical transformation. If I could do it with guitar I could definitely do it with exercise and nutrition.

I saw a commercial for 10 minute trainer and I recognized the trainer (Tony Horton) from the P90X commercials that I had seen. I would watch P90X commercial and say, "I should be doing that. I know that will work."

I had been inspired to start P90X but I knew it would be too tough straight out of the gate. So I opted for 10 minute trainer just to get back into the game.

It was exactly what I needed. Even the busiest person in the world can find ten minutes to do a little something positive for themselves.

At first I struggled with the 10 minute trainer workouts. They are intense. After a while I was stacking the workouts, doing 30 or 40 minutes of exercise a day and eating better.

I lost 9 lbs in 3 weeks and I was ready for P90X.

I started it right away and I loved the challenge. It is hard but it's also really fun. It's like a mini version of life - You get out of it what you put into it. I haven't even completed the full cycle of P90X and I have already achieved the goals I had set for myself. My basic goals were achieve cardiovascular fitness and develop core strength and improved flexibilty. If I lost a bit more weight in the process that would also be a bonus. All of that happened and is still improving.

I work hard at all things I enjoy in life but I am by no means an uber disciplined android. Truth be told I could work even harder and achieve even greater results. I probably will.

My point is, and most of you who are members on this website already know this, these programs really work. They are well made and easy to follow. You get real results and that speaks to the quality of the product and it's design team.

I have come to a point in my life where I have a great interest in sharing positive information and living in the present. Maybe it's because I'm a father now and I want our kids to grow up to be excited by challenges not discouraged by them.

For me I like to keep things simple, "Where there is a will there is a way".

Or as Beach Body says, Decide. Commit. Succeed.
