I'm originally from New Mexico. I left home at 19 to enter the Air Force, and I've been stationed in the U.K., Italy, Alaska, Japan, and Iraq. After 10 years of service as an enlisted Airman and an officer, I'm now a military spouse living in Japan with my husband and two girls. When I was in the Air Force, I was expected to stay in shape for duty by running and doing my daily dose of push-ups

For the past two years, I have dealt with the highs and lows of depression; one of those lows being overeating powered by emotions, which lead to low self-esteem and an even lower perception of my body image. I was so depressed at times that I wouldn't want to get out of bed or go to work. I would cry for no reason and I was always moody. When my mood swings began to affect my relationships at home and at work, I decided to see a therapist, and, eventually began treatment with an antidepressant. In October of 2006, I committed to attending a twice-weekly yoga practice at my therapist's suggestion. Within the first week, I noticed I was calmer, and more able to deal with stress. I began practicing yoga more frequently, using DVDs on the days I didn't have class, and attending a Saturday morning class on base and a Sunday morning class in a suburb of Tokyo. I began to enjoy practicing yoga so much that when my instructor suggested a weekend certification with YogaFit, I jumped on the opportunity and wound up taking three separate yoga certifications (YogaFit Level 1, Level 2, and YogaFit Kids). My yoga practice and continued therapy are useful tools I have used to help me battle my bought with depression. I hope to become a yoga and primary group exercise instructor and show people how fitness can help in the fight against depression.
