kapaa, HI My Success Story is not one about a dramatic weight loss that will get me on the front page of the website, but is important to me and maybe to all those over 50 or over 60 (like me). Those people who are trying to stay fit and healthy, but nonetheless feel they are losing the battle with time.
I'm a 61 year old man who has always tried to stay fit and active. As I approached and passed my My Success Story is not one about a dramatic weight loss that will get me on the front page of the website, but is important to me and maybe to all those over 50 or over 60 (like me). Those people who are trying to stay fit and healthy, but nonetheless feel they are losing the battle with time.
I'm a 61 year old man who has always tried to stay fit and active. As I approached and passed my 60th birthday I felt like I was losing the "battle" with time. I don't care about the wrinkles, but the small "spare tire" that I just could not do anything about and the loss of muscle mass were really disappointing. I have a very physical job which is like a full body workout every day. I also run, do weight training and eat "right". But I still felt older and less fit as time went on.
I had seen Tony Horton and the P90X infomercial several times and always felt maybe...but then would say no-I'm too old. Of course that was not the end of it. One day I said Yes instead of no and ordered it last February. I was very nervous when I received it but took Tony's message as true that there were different levels for different people.
For me, the results were fantastic! Within 3 or 4 weeks, my spare tire was gone and my washboard abs showed up and are now more impressive than I have ever had, even when I was in my 30's and 40's. I went from 4 pullups in one set on day one to 15 by day 90! I tripled my pushup totals over the course of the program and the day I did my first one arm push up (on my toes not my knees) was a special moment I will never forget.
I had several challenges during the program, the worst of which was working around an old rotator cuff injury that limits what I can do with my left arm, shoulder and chest. But each time a challenge arose, I was able to modify the exercise with Tony's suggestions and my own experiences.
After 90 days I was so happy with the results that I encourage everyone who asks about my physique to check out P90X and Beachbody.com.
Some of my after pictures are not exactly at the end of the program, but are from my vacation on the beaches of Hawaii where I go several times a year. While on vacation in May I took my resistance bands (instead of my dumbells-Duh), and did my week 10 workouts on the beach. My wife said people would stop and watch as I worked out and several people asked me about the workouts I was doing. When I told them it was the week before my 61st birthday they were very surprised and I was glad I could set an example for other seniors.
I am continuing to use Tony's concept of muscle confusion. I have finished my first round of P90X with great results and have now developed an exercise program similar to the resistance training programs in P90X but using my Bowflex to lift heavier weights. After a few weeks of that and a week or 2 break I will do another round of P90X or get P90X+. I intent to keep building on success and cheating Father Time!
Thank you Tony Horton and all the good people at Beachbody who have contributed to my Success Story.
FAST FORWARD 2 YEARS...
It has been 2 years since my initial success story. My lack of adding to this has more to do with my lack of computer skills, not to my not continuing to use P90X and the muscle confusion theory.
I have completed six 90 day rounds of P90X and am curently in week 7 of P90X+. While the dramatic improvements of the first round are not there, the most dramatic improvement is that I KEEP MAKING IMPROVEMENTS!
Here are some examples.
A few weeks before my 63rd birthday I set personal bests for chinups in one set (20), for wide pullups in one set (17), for total pullups in one exercise hour (137-Legs and Back 8 sets) and total pushups in one exercise hour (265-Chest and back 12 sets).
When I am in a social situation where not wearing a shirt is appropriate (beach, picnics, etc.) people are stunned that a man in his 60's can look like I do. In addition to having a P90X physique, I also have dreadlocks and a number of Polynesian body tattoos. I recently went to the Davis California Whole Earth Festival in a loincloth and sandals. While there, I had 10 people ask if they could take my picture and my wife said many other people were doing so on the sly.
I am a landscape gardener and I was working the other day (after my 63rd birthday) and a car with two people stopped right in the street where I was cutting a lawn and took several photos. I was fully dressed in work pants, shoes and a tank top. Then they gave me a thumbs up and drove away.
One of my rounds of P90X was done at a local gym so I could use the machines to lift heavier weights. By week 3 or 4 the word had spread that this "old guy" was doing some amazing workouts and I eventually had a little fan club while I was there! One day I asked a young fit man if I could alternate with him using the lat tower to do pull ups. He said sure and I did 17 neutral position Pullups. When I got done and turne around, his eyes were like saucers and he said "nice workout dude!"
My physical problems from old injuries have been much diminished. When I started 2 1/2 years ago, I could not go fully down when doing pushups and could not fully straighten my arms when doing pullups. This was due to my torn rotator cuff in my left shoulder. These have both been corrected! I now go "super deep" as Tony says, even using the "6 extra inches with the pushup stands".
These have all been fun experiences for me to be sure. But the best thing is I feel stronger, younger, healthier and better about myself. Old BAH! I am fitter stronger more muscular than I have ever been in my life. A few years ago, I found myself modifing how I did my gardening job because I was losing strength. Today I find myself able to do things the way I did them 10 years ago! That is an amazing feeling!
THANK YOU TONY HORTON AND BEACHBODY FOR TEACHING ME THE PATH TO THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH!
