Derby, KS I wouldn't say that I have seriously struggled with my weight but I noticed as I got closer to turning 40 it was definitley becoming more of a challenge. When I was in my late teens and early 20's I competed in ballroom/latin dance and so therefore stayed extremely active and slim. Because of my active lifestyle, & eating healthy it was simple to stay trimmed and toned. Of course I wouldn't say that I have seriously struggled with my weight but I noticed as I got closer to turning 40 it was definitley becoming more of a challenge. When I was in my late teens and early 20's I competed in ballroom/latin dance and so therefore stayed extremely active and slim. Because of my active lifestyle, & eating healthy it was simple to stay trimmed and toned. Of course being young helped too! After I got married within a year I packed on 20 extra pounds! So did my husband so he couldn't complain! I didn't realize this 20 pounds was even creeping up on me and until one day I pulled a dress out of my closet I hadn't worn in awhile. I was horrified that I couldn't get the buttons in the button holes! My first thought wasn't "Oh, I must have put on a few pounds since last spring"; it was, " What in the world is wrong with this dress!". Of course, I soon realized, the problem wasn't the dress.
Following that wake up call I joined weight watchers with some friends, and the weight came off; about 15 lbs of it. Then, I quit going. You guessed it, the weight piled on again.
Once I reached my mid 30's dieting alone wasn't going to work for me. I felt like a big blob, just trying to make it through the day. Nothing to look forward to except dinner, and what was on TV that I could share with "ben & jerry". Obviously something had to change.
A good friend of mine who was a workout junkie told me about Turbo Jam. I'm like Turbo what? Sounds like torture. I had been trying to make it to the gym at least 3 x's a week and all of the classes were starting to become mundane. I had convinced myself there couldn't possibly be a workout out there that might actually be #1-a great workout, and #2-fun to do. No way.. doesn't exist.
Since Turbo Jam and being introduced to the live class "turbo kick" by my Beachbody coach Sherrie I was motiviated to start teaching fitness myself! In a million years I NEVER thought I would be a fitness instructor! I can't tell you though how exciting and thrilling it is to do what you love and share it with other people. I'll turn 43 next year, and 4 years ago this was something I was totally depressed about. Now, I feel like my life is just starting. I'm even back to teaching ballroom dance again. Something I had always dreamed about doing, but lacked the confidence because of my lifestyle.

I believe ultimately my transformation started with a decision of YES, i'm going to do this and not let anything get in my way. I made exercise and eating healthy a priority. I didn't let life's obstacles hinder my progress. There were always something out there that could potentially sabatoge my goals. So, I would always try to plan in advance. For example if the kids wanted to go to McDonalds after school, I made sure I had plenty of healthy snacks on hand to eat so I wouldn't be tempted. I always try to go to the grocery store full, so I wouldn't be seduced by the smell of fried chicken and donuts.
I think a big thing that helped in my transformation was exercise. Of course, once I became an instructor, the pounds really began to melt away. Now, that doesn't mean everyone needs to be an instructor to lose weight; what it taught me is consistency is key. Because I WAS the teacher, I couldn't let a little thing like a mild headache, the laundry, or other chore get in the way. I had to be there.
